Ken died in 1966 in a testing accident a couple of months after the LeMans race featured in this film, so the Ford wins at LeMans from 1967-69 were all with other drivers driving the car that Ken helped develop. This was Ken's last LeMans 24 hrs

The Ford GT40 won 4 years in a row. Ken didn’t win in 66 due to the technicality and died shortly after that. The other wins were different drivers. The high level of the story is correct but the details may have been changed for the movie. As mentioned by others, Lee Iacocca and then Shelby moved to Chrysler and built cool cars in the 1980’s. Shelby with his heart problems later had a heart transplant but died in 2012. The little Cobra roadster he drove was is still a much revered car and they’re very valuable.

I wanted to add about Lee Iacocca. It's too bad that the filmmakers made him some kind of fool. In fact, it was a talented manager who revived the Ford brand. One Ford Mustang is worth something. When he was fired from Ford, he headed Chrysler and brought it not just out of the crisis, but practically out of bankruptcy. With regard to the racer Lorenzo Bandini (with whom Miles competed) - he died at the Monaco GP in 1967. Bruce McLaren (also a Ford pilot), like Bandini, was a Formula 1 pilot and created his own McLaren Motor Racing team (now McLaren F1 for 2022). He died in 1970 during tests. Enzo Ferrari the head of the Ferrari company remained the head until his death in 1988. There is a film about him - Ferrari (2002). Carroll Shelby then worked at Dodge, at the request of the aforementioned, Lee Iacocca.

The reason Miles lost the race was not because he didn't know where the finish line is. He did the same number of laps as the other 2 racers, and they all crossed at the exact same time, so the winner is determined by who went the furthest distance overall. The other guy won because he started further back in the race, so he technically went a further distance than Miles in the same exact amount of time

-But that was a terrible ruling since these guys race prior to the LeMans race day to see who post the best time and based on that is the order in which they are aligned to start the actual race. So, “winning” the pole position per se works against you and is not beneficial to any of the drivers to place first at the starting line.

Yes, Ken Miles did die a few months after driving Le Mans while he was testing the newest version of the car. The ending was saying that it was the car that won, not Miles. Ken Miles never officially won at Le Mans before his death. McLaren won on a technicality. At the very start of the race, McLaren's car was further back from the starting line so he technically traveled further than Milies' car which would make him the winner. Like Shelby said in the movie, a BS technicality.

Great reaction ladies to a awesome movie... ove to see what you react next too. Trivia: Lee Ioccoca worked for Ford in the begining of his career and was one of the men responsible for the Mustang; the Shelby mustang and race car for Lemans (as seen here in movie); and eventually became #2 man of Ford Motor company. However Henry Ford II would never let him head the Ford Motor company because he was not a Ford. Lee Ioccoca then left Ford and became GM of Chrysler/Dodge and the rest as they say is history. Great book to read about him is Lee Ioccoca the autobiography.

Great reaction to this movie. The race known as "The 24 Hours at Le mans" is a brutal race, and it's still being run every year. It's incredibly difficult on cars and on the drivers. This race, which is an endurance race, is different than most types of racing. If you remember the start of the race, cars were lined up in order, then the racers took off. In Le mans, the winner is the car that drives the greatest distance, and since Bruce McLaren's Ford started ahead of Ken's car, when they crossed the finish line, McLaren's car went the greater distance and was declared the winner. Ken was killed while testing the newer version of the Ford in California several months after the race in France.

Great movie and reaction, dear Ellie and Lia 😊💋👍👌 Decided to modify my comment as you girls clearly need some help with some parts of the movie: 1- The Le Mans race is an endurance race held in France on a track that is partially public road and private track around 8.5 miles long per lap. The CARS have to drive around the event for 24 hrs. while the drivers take shifts to complete the race (generally 4 hrs). It is impossible for a single person to drive for 24 hrs. straight. On Ken’s second stop of the race, you can see the other driver that takes the wheel and replaces him for a while. 2- The car they used is the Ford GT40. Originally, it was created by a company called Lola in England but only achieved terrible results. The program was then handed over to Carroll Shelby who modified and redeveloped the car to winning form (such as Daytona’s victory). They did not steal the prototype as Ellie thought. It was given to Shelby for him to redesign and work on and Miles as test driver. 3- The first time they go to Le Mans is on 1965 when all Fords fail to finish (as foretold by Ken). Shelby continues the development of the car to compete once again in 1966 Le Mans. 4- Beebe is portrayed as a sort of movie villain. He often had disagreements with the previous designer of the Lola GT prototype and Ford’s micromanaging and decision making processes by committee and did not agree with most of Miles’ decisions while driving. The movie plays with this slightly as it makes it look as a sort of a personal vendetta against Miles although it is slightly exaggerated or changed for dramatic effect. For example, Shelby did not lock Beebe in his office and Shelby did not “bet” his company with Ford. 5- The sign that Shelby writes says: “7000+ go like Hell”. The cars have to balance out speed and reliability. If they go too fast, they are more susceptible to breaks or failures. If they go too slow, they are not competitive. The green GT40 was going a bit slow (below 6000 rpm) to ensure it did not break while it was in the lead. So, Shelby ordered Miles to go full throttle (7000+) and go as fast as possible in order to reach and overtake the leader to win (go like Hell). 6- In the final race, 1966 Le Mans, in real life, Ken smashed the door multiple times against his helmet, bending the frame so the door could not close. The movie does not show the cause of the problem, but the door thing did happen. 7- No, the cars cannot be repaired/changed. Parts could be swapped but the whole car cannot. 8- Miles experienced what is called brake fade. In simple terms, the brakes heat up tremendously due to the friction between the pads and rotor when braking. The braking fluid begins to lose viscosity and effectiveness when overheated. Consequently, it reaches a point where the brakes fail. 9- The race winner is about the car that manages to do the most amount of mileage within the 24 hrs time period. It is not per se based on a set number of laps. 10- Miles was one lap behind Bandini (the Ferrari driver). So, in order for Miles to take the lead, he had to pass Bandini twice: once to un-lap himself and the second time to claim the race leadership. Ken passes Bandini on the Mulsanne corner the first time and then on the Mulsanne straight the second time which is when Bandini blows the engine trying to keep up with Ken. 11- In the movie, Beebe wants the three Ford GT40s to cross at the same time to get a photo for marketing and publicity (and also to stick it to Miles). Shelby disagrees and allows Ken to decide. Ken decides to break his record (the perfect lap, as he calls it) and then surrenders his lead to allow the other GT40s to catch him up and cross at the same time. In real life, there was a bunch of controversy regarding some brake parts in their cars. The Ford executives had to make a choice: they could allow their drivers to race and decide who would win on their own but risk an accident/car failure or they could order their drivers to slow down to ensure the cars would not fail and ensure their victory (Ford was 1-2-3). They chose the latter. Originally, Shelby agreed but later regretted it years later. 12- Bruce McLaren was declared the winner due to a technicality. They explained that Bruce travelled a bit more mileage than Ken during the start of the race as he started further down the main straight while Miles started almost next to the finish line. It does not matter who set the fastest lap nor lap record. 13- Ken Miles died in a crash while developing the J-car prototype. He was abducted to the Hall of Fame posthumously. 14- The race you see is the 1966 Le Mans. The GT40 car won four straight Le Mans races: 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969. As explained earlier, Ken did not win Le Mans.
@JohnnyXoz
@JohnnyXoz Год назад
Yes Ken Miles died in 1966 a couple of months after winning second at this race in the 24hrs at Le Mans. Ford's decision to have the 3 Ford GT40's cross the line together gave the win to the one driven by Bruce McLaren as he had started further back at the start. Ken had won races that year at the 12hr Sebring and 24hr Daytona, so he was hoping to win Le Mans to make it a an endurance Triple Crown. Ken died later that year(1966) during testing the new Ford J-car

Love your reactions. Ellie, the car won multiple years, but not with Ken driving. It's 24 hours because it's kind of like 2 races- who the best driver is, and who has the best car/team. A poor car/team will not last 24 hours. There is glory for the driver, but also the carmaker. The stopwatch and the bolt are not cheating- if the Ferrari team are dumb enough to fall for it, then they deserve to lose. Edit: Ken lost the win because it's total distance that counts- McClaren started farther back so, he drove "further" in the same amount of time. If Ken had not slowed down he would have won.
@noxus_8545
@noxus_8545 Год назад
Stealing the stopwatch from Ferrari was definitely cheating. Stealing parts, tools, or anything else from another team is not allowed whether it is an entire set of tires or just a stopwatch. I do agree that for the bolt it was Ferrari's team's fault to fall for it but you can't just go around stealing other team's tools or parts and don't call it cheating.

All three cars (as well as others) were Ford GT 40's. They were all developed by Shelby and Miles. But Miles himself never won Le Mans. One of the things they did change in the movie was the finish at Le Mans. Miles actually did finish second. He did slow down, as the movie shows, to let them catch up. Then, just before the finish, he slowed down just a bit. What the movie showed is what would have happened if it were too close to call. It's an old rule at Le Mans. If it's too close to call, the winner is the one who traveled a longer distance. Miles started ahead of the other drivers, so he traveled less of a distance. It's a stupid rule that doesn't exist any more.

The "24 Hours of Le Mans" is what's known as an 'Endurance Race'. meaning that it is not a set number of laps you have to complete. Endurance racing is all about how many laps you can do in a certain amount of time, the more laps you do, the further you've driven, therefore determining your final position. That "Technicality" that cost Ken Miles the win is not used these days. Today, if two cars finish the same number of laps at the end of the race, the winner is the one who crosses the finish line first. The fancy Running start to the cars is not used anymore either. Stupid safety regulations. Racing in the 1960s was pure. No electronics to help the driver, no idiots clowning around through a headset in your helmet. Just true Driving talent going Wheel - to - Wheel. LOVE THE WORK LADIES!!!❤ CHEER FROM AUSTRALIA!!!! 🏁

It's been a while since I saw it, so I don't remember how clear, if at all, they made it in the movie, but I think the point was that Ken could've ignored Ford management and served his own ego by winning the race his way, but he probably would've lost the job going forward, and not been able to support his wife and son. I think the point was that he sacrificed his own needs for his family. You guys should also watch "Days Of Thunder". It's basically Top Gun but in NASCARs instead of jets, but it's good. back in the day ( I graduated H.S. in '67 ) car racing was FAR more interesting - one example - one team ran Jet turbine engines ( I think from Helicopters ) at Indy for maybe 3 years before being banned, actually their size / capacity drastically reduced. > LeMans used to have a long straight , a Mile I think. in Mid 1980's a Jag. went flying over 1 /4 mile into the stands. not good. they both reduced car regulations, they put curves into the straight to reduce speeds. of course the drivers don't go 24 hrs, each car has 2 or 3 drivers splitting time. > fun stuff - the car shown at the 2: min > mark is an MG a model - I owned one. to show the engineering at the time, I was coming home from college on a divided 4 lane, the steering wheel came off in my hands. yes. just pure luck I drove off into a field rather than a bridge support....You seem confused on who won - the ' 2 nd place ' car won because it drove further, starting farther back at the start. the type of car won several years , actually the exact same car won twice, unheard of in all out racing.

Probably already been said but I love racing, the 24 hours of Le Mans and this movie so here goes. Ken was the 2nd Ford driver to die testing the new car. I feel like there was a 3rd after that but I don't remember for sure. Anyway to explain the end of the race, the technicality was that all 3 Ford cars were on the same lap so they basically all completed the same distance. However there has to be a winner, can't be a tie. So the call was made that since Bruce McLaren's car started the race further behind Ken Miles' car, McLaren's car actually traveled a further distance in the 24 hour span of the race, so he was declared the winner. I'm unsure if the drama between Ken, Shelby and the Ford people was exactly how it was portrayed in the film, but damn it's a good movie. Have you guys watched RUSH yet? Cuz that's a must watch. There were three Ford drivers at that race. That Beebee fuck hated Miles, so he made up that photo trick with the three cars, just not to let him win the race. The Maclaren Team won, The Shelby Team lost, Ford won, Ken lost... But the beautiful thing is that Enzo showed respect. Enzo was the true automobile artist and really loved this motor sport. It can be seen how he stays with his team, day and night, giving instructions, while the Deuce left with a helicopter to eat dinner, he did not care so much for this racing thing, he cared that Ford will win, for the publicity, for the photos and stuff. He did not really care for Miles's driving skills or genious, because he didn't really care about racing. As it is stated multiple times for Ford, "they sell cars", that is all. At least this is what is the story in the movie. For sure there are some historical inaccuracies but the story altogether is true from what I've read. It's good that Ken is getting the appreciation that he deserves now, it's good that he is in the Racing Hall of Fame. And even though he died, he died while doing what he loved, what he breathed for, his true talent, his true passion. I respect that. If everyone of us puts so much effort and love into the things we do, the whole world would be a different, better place.

It’s not based on a true story it is a true story. As a matter of fact it’s the greatest anglo American partnership since Merlin put its engine in a American P51 mustang in WW2. Ken Miles was the greatest racing driver of all time. Absolute legend. Carrol Shelby was the greatest engine designer of all time. These 2 one English and one American guys made history.

I remember when this occurred. Ferrari ended up building a totally new car. They rented the Daytona Beach Speedway for a month before the 24-Hours. My school (Mainland Senior High) was 1 mile from the speedway and the teachers couldn't talk over the roar of the engines. They just wrote an assignment on the board. The Ferraris ran the Fords into the ground. I now live about 6 miles from the speedway and during the 24-hours, I can hear the car at night.

Ferrari ran the 330 P series in consecutive years. The P4 replaced the P3 in '67 because P3s were adapted from the P2 and damaged and otherwise at the end of the line. So it was a natural progression, they ran out of car. Ferrari built and adapted these cars in very limited numbers on a need basis.

Miles won the 24 Hours of Daytona, sharing the Ford GT Mk II with Lloyd Ruby, and then won the 12 Hours of Sebring. Several months later, sharing the drive with Denny Hulme, Miles was leading the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans in the #1 car, but Ford Motor Company executive Leo Beebe, desiring a publicity photo of three of Ford's cars crossing the finish line together, instructed Miles to slow down, which he did. Accordingly, on the final lap the next car from Ford driven by Bruce McLaren/Chris Amon and the third-place car from Ford drew up, and they cruised to the line together.[11] The French race officials, after initially agreeing to Ford's dead-heat "photo-finish", reneged during the final hour of the race. Although Miles' #1 car and McLaren's #2 car crossed the finish line together, McLaren's #2 was declared the winner because having started in second position behind Miles' car, it had therefore covered 8 meters more distance during the race.[12][13] Miles was denied the unique achievement of winning Sebring, Daytona, and Le Mans in the same year.

He did not win. First race he was not in because Ford did not like him, and the Ford's did not finish. In the second race he was well ahead on his way to victory. Ford wanted all 3 cars to finish at the same exact time in a tie to make a great promotional picture. Ken slowed down from certain victory to make this happen. Remember the start when they ran to the cars, one of the other Fords was further down the line. So at the end of the race the race officials declared the car that started further down the line the winner and Ken came in second. Ken did testing of the car before the next race. The car that he helped develop then won the next 4 races. I hope that clears it up.

My only complaint is with the way they made the ford executive to be an arse ,in real life he was never like that a corporate man yes but not like the way he was portrayed in the movie as others have committed he was a good manager.

Ken lost LeMans because the race is won by the driver that covers the most distance in 24 hours, Bruce McLaren won the race because he started further back from Ken so even though Ken finished the race first by a couple of feet, Bruce started 40-50 feet further back, so in effect travelled a longer distance.

Lee Iacocca left Ford to save AMC/Chrysler but building those dammed K-Cars (Engines were sideways). Just before they kicked Ford out of Lemans Races simply due to the fact it could not be beaten. Henry Ford also made a bid to buy Ferrari which Enzo Ferrari made the deal and signed the papers. Iacocca got in the way of the deal, telling Ferrari Ford wasn't going to sell Ferrari's as a premium sports car, and NOT TO Tell Henry Ford, just back out of a signed contract. Enzo had the international community behind him. Large swaths of this film are completely made up.

Along with Miles, (Lorenzo) Bandini in the Ferrari would never be able to race the 24 Hours of LeMans again either. Bandini would be killed in the F1 Monaco Grand Prix the following year. During the race in the film, there was lightning in the area. In today's day & age, the race would have stopped and be red flagged for at least 30 minutes.

Let's hope this piece of history is not seen as a triumphant win by a US company. I'm not sure what the net worth of Ford was in 1966, but I'm sure Ferrari was miniscule in comparison. To try and put it into perspective, I believe Ford almost bought Ferrari out for just $10M. It is estimated Ford invested $25M into the GT40 development for the '65, '66 races alone. Some say it was actually as much as $100M. You can imagine the figure would be silenced by Henry II to save embarrassment after the Ferrari rejection of $10M. Bearing in mind that Ford approached them in the first place to acquire true racecars.
