Ford V8 Pilot - chocks away in the flathead V8

For the Ford V8 Pilot's second proper test drive we head over to Sleap airfield, a former WW2 airfield, to see what was going on. The idea was to give this 1950s classic car a longer drive out to see how it behaved once fully warmed up, and as the weather was so nice I didn't need much persuading.
Before firing up the Pilot's 3.6 Litre V8 flathead (sidevalve) engine I have a quick talk about several items of memorabilia relating to classic cars that had turned up over the previous couple of days.
After our drive out and look around at the aircraft over at Sleap, we head home and - as the weather was still fantastic - we awaken the 4CV and take that for a quick blast just to keep everything working and free. It couldn't be more different to drive, despite being of a similar age(ish).
The jury's still out on the V8 Pilot's lofty wing mirrors, although the comments added to the previous video show a strong leaning towards losing those mirrors and sticking just with those already mounted on the doors.
Thanks for looking in, please take a look around the rest of the channel, and the other videos about the Ford V8 Pilot that are on here (I'll set up a playlist grouping them all together). The sound of the V8 Ford's engine - which can trace its roots back to the 1930s - is a joy to listen to, its (in)ability to start when cold is less of a pleasure so that'll be one of the first jobs I think I'll look into more closely.
If you'd like to follow progress on this British market V8 Pilot, and our other classic cars, please subscribe and click the notifications bell.

As a Cincinnati resident, your box was made by Sperti, Inc. George Sperti graduated from the University of Cincinnati and developed an ultraviolet lamp to kill bacteria in milk without changing its flavor. He went on to develop sunlamps for tanning and other devices. Excerpt from the Sperti company site reads,"1942: The name of the company was changed to SPERTI, INC. During the war years, SPERTI, INC. manufactured various instruments for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force (bomb sites, mercury switches, distance sites and gauges). The only tanning lamps manufactured during the war were for military purposes." So glad you have a piece of my town in your possession and also wonder how it got to you. I assume WWII brought it to England's shores, but I wonder how it survived all those years. Great find!

I was in Prees Heath yesterday and went past the old garage opposite the truck stop. Like you I was reminded of a time when roadside garages did everything from supplying new cars, to selling petrol at the front, diesel was always round the back, and servicing and repairs as well. Most would supply for a group like Rootes or British Leyland and keep just. one or two cars undercover I the showroom. I was also reminded that before the advent of cartransporters, cars would be delivered by men, often older men with a pair of trade plates. They would pick the cars up from the manufacturer or another dealer, and deliver them to the garage for preparation prior to collection by the new owner. Having delivered the car, the delivery man would them get lifts back to base or his next job, and could often be seen at intersections showing his trade plates to drivers who knew that he was in need of a lift. Overcoat, trilby and trade plates - no more.

Hi Rick, another fine video. I really enjoy your collection of old garage paraphernalia, but then I am old garage paraphernalia! Traveling with you in the Pilot was a treat, mine's been off the road for a year. You certainly are blessed with a lovely bit of countryside. As for MPG, they only did 20 when they were new, mine does, or rather did before I changed the engine, a mere 13! Oh and just to pop my motor racing nerd hat on for a mo, that Jag was the 1957 Le Mans winner driven by Ivor Bueb and Ron Flockhart.

A lot of memories on that trolley certainly for me, I recall well the grinding paste, the magical Gunk and the hydrometer. You give meaning to the expression "One man's junk is another man's treasure". I think I may have been wrong about my Dad's Pilot station wagon not being a woody, my brother who is 2 years younger than I am also remembers it and states "it did have wood on the sides". Unfortunately we don't have any photos be we are now on a quest as my brother hates being wrong. I have to say your Pilot does look magnificent.

It's been a great Sunday morning of dad son videos giving an airing to some of your classic collection. I love 'em all but the 4CV is superb as it looks like a big car in miniature, and from the in-car shots by honourable son, there seem no steering slop at all as you were not having to over correct. Well done both and I look forward, as always, to more. A final comment is that while I know nothing is ever perfect in life and families but your enduring shared love of all things classical is one I envy when Harley is bound to be at an age when it can see a parting of interests. Hi 👋 I thought I would check in with your video to see how your Pilot is going. And it is. Such a good buy she is , i like the green color and the white wall tyres . The chrome steering wheel is neat too. That metal trolley took me back to my time at the NZ National Film Library in the 1980s. I worked with 16 millimeter educational films for schools. I was a film examiner. We used trolleys like your one to wheel around the films when shelving them. They were older than the 1980s in age. The job that I did doesn't exist now, due to technology changes. I also did film editing work for the NZ National Film Unit. I loved that work. I like your Renault . How is your Austin A40 project going ?. Thanks for your video , I liked the aircraft shown in it. From Carl.

Hi, fuel's not the issue, there's plenty of that - there's no spark when cranking on the starter cold, yet I turn it on the starting handle and it sparks up and the engine fires within a few turns. The starter is hogging the electricity on a cold start, and the retro-fitted electronic ignition isn't getting enough to work. Start by hand, and the ign gets all the power it needs to spark.

The side-valve V8 Ford cars from this era and a little bit later and probably up to the mid 50's are maybe my most favourite. I really love these cars, because of how they actually changed the motor car car industry. I love it when you see these old Fords with the original performance parts added to them ( better carburetors, exhausts etc). I absolutely hate it when someone replaces the flathead V8 with a Chevrolet small block. Ahh! Sacrilege. Yours is a beautiful example, maybe a bit too quite. Of course exhaust is personal choice, I would fit a couple of glass pack mufflers. Look after her, you are very lucky.

Great workshop pickups, the workshop trolley is a usefull tool to have. It will come in hand when working on the cars. The hydrometer is a fantastic pickup, looks like it has never been used as it has not been put together. The Pilot is fantastic with that and the Dodge pickup two great cars. The electronic distributor should work well, but I have heard if it is a chinese one then it may not be so good. What type is it , ie a full electronic dissy or just electronic guts in original dissy. Either way the original dissy and points would be my option, as long as the battery is charged and points clean and adjusted it should start fine. Enjoy the pilot.

Some good finds there. I do remember the hydrometer though i have not used one. I have used the grinding paste with dowel and rubber sucker, apparently you can now get a drill attachment but that does not seem the same to me! The Pilot looked quite at home at the airfield and even blended with the green grass in the sun! I would deal with the battery leads soon and I think you will see a difference in starting from cold. The 4CV seems to be much happier now moving at quite a pace. I have to say that closing those suicide doors reminded me of the very funny film 'The Plank' with Eric Sykes (and others), If you have never seen it then it is well worth a watch. A bit 'off subject' at the end of my comment there but a great video once again Rick, thank you. 👍👍

@rhettfisher1018
@rhettfisher1018 8 месяцев назад
Pilots built before circa March 1951 have a ballst resistor mounted adjacent to the fuse carrier. By-pass it by putting its two wires to the same terminal. Leaving it in circuit will cause a sgnificant voltage drop at the coil when cranking the engine, which is most likely to be the cause of the difficult cold-starting.@@oldclassiccarUK

That is a neat picture of the D type, my favourite "Le Mans" car of all time. Interesting that an electronic ignition has been fitted to the Pilot. The dual point distributors these old v8's were fitted with were very reliable, at least the US crab style particularly (42 to 48). These had a 2 bolt mounting plate ( pilot maybe has 3 holes same as some of the earlier US models) Is it a Lucas dizzy? It is only a matter of changing the timing cover over to a 2 bolt the use the crab. If you see one at an autojumble it would be worth grabbing. Often people will fit electronic distributer's to these because they are not happy with the original setup as it hasn't been set up properly. If you go back to points find someone who is a "guru" with flatheads and send the distributer out if you cant take the car. They will probably have the correct machine to set these things up on. Once set up it can be bolted back on the car and it will require no further adjustment on your part. You probably know these directly drive off the front of the cam and can only be mounted one way as the tang is off set. Here is a link from Fordbarn which I am a member of where electronic distributers for the Pilot is discussed fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=138747. Mart who posts there is from Solihull knows his flatheads and variations also has his own channel, "Marts Garage."

Starting that engine from cold on the handle I regard as a very good thing. The fellow in the USA who only does Video's about Model A's. He uses multigrade oils, correct me if I am wrong? What is the betting that your engine is running on SAE 30 engine oil? My plastic Pig is fitted with a ballast resistor type coil. That is one of 9 volts with a 3 volt resistor in circuit. This is switched out of circuit during starting to give a better spark. Your system is a 6 volt one so a little more difficult. I would be running the wire direct from the battery to the contactor for starting. So just a relay to give you that direct feed. Even then as your engine with 8 cylinders likes starting on the handle when cold. With the correct modern oil in it use the handle. It is a nice kind way to start your engine from cold.
