V8 PILOT LATEST - fresh coolant, then a test drive to the Hopley House classic car meet

Sunday saw the Ford V8 Pilot head out on its first proper test run since all the recent distributor shenanigans (covered in previous videos). Will it run ok? Will the replacement distributor and carburettor actually work consistently?
Prior to the run out to a classic car breakfast meet at the Hopley House Farm Shop, I wanted to change the coolant - a quick peek inside the radiator showed old coolant that looked more like oxtail soup than a healthy anti-freeze mix so with fresh containers of anti-freeze to hand, I drained off the old stuff and mixed up fresh.
This video covers the work undertaken on the Saturday, and Sunday's drive out in the Pilot and the MX5. Footage of various cars arriving and departing the Cheshire meet then follows, the oldest being a 1913 Ford Model T. Back at OCC HQ the grey Fergie tractor is also given a spruce up and is re-positioned back in front of my youthful assistant's sheds.

Hi Rick - great video as always. I personally would have flushed the cooling system with clean water after draining all that filth, before adding the Coolant ? So glad the Pilot is running so well, I'm so envious of you, it really is a beauty. Thanks for all your work producing these videos for us. Thanks and take care 🙂

I did think of flushing it but it actually came out cleaner than I'd expected (I thought the remnants dripping out would be very gloopy, but they weren't). Thanks for supporting the channels.

Magnificent car, the Pilot, very American. The slanty tail lights on the 1100 came in about '67, and a bit later, the FX4 Taxi had new rear wing pressings to accommodate these. Previous to this, they had a stop/tail lamp, and the direction indicator stuck out of the roof above the B pillar. Thanks for your videos.

👋 HI. The more I look at your Ford Pilot the more I like it. Having white wall tyres makes it, especially in that nice green colour. Well we got to see it toileting, having a pee and all . Ha !. Having a leak before hitting the road. I like the Mini Clubman Estate, extremely rare to see a saloon let alone an estate. Very nice. I like the current Mini, I think it's design is very nifty.

Does look as if there are no thermostats fitted. Sometimes they are removed if overheating is an issue, but its not really a solution as it can let the coolant go through the rad too quickly and not cool the coolant correctly. Very odd drain taps, usually they are open when the lever is in line with the flow.

Used to be so simple changing anti frezze.....so many different types no..... How did you know what type to put in the Pilot. I like 50% for its anti corrosion qualities.....after a good flush out with plain water....and a run to get in all the nooks....used to be able to buy rad flush. Love the polished header tank.....yes no stats....I would think the same.....not good for the motor.....not getting hot enough....what temp does it run at after a bit of a run. Your right....it is a very sweet engine. Is your dad connected with aviation.....some nice badges on the Jags grill.

I can strongly recommend Morris Oils "Ankersol"corrosion inhibitor additive to add to your glycol antifreeze. It helps prohibit corrosion in iron blocks. Used it for 15 years now and it stops the antifreeze going brown, so really works. It also ads a fluorescent greenn colour so makes leak finding a doddle.

Morning All ! Richard can you confirm that the M.G "Y" type also had it's own jacking system ? My brother wrote off Dad's new Morris 1100 in Christmas 1963. He was overtaking a car (it was dark) and the car overtook a bike pushing us off the road . My twin brother and l were in the front left seat (no seat belts back then!) The door burst open and Keith was thrown onto the road . Luckily , he wasn't run over ! Meanwhile , we careered into a field , bounced over a tree, landing on the roof which was flattened down to the door tops ! Somehow , my brother and l scrambled out . We looked for Keith and thought he might be under the car . How we did it l'll never know but we managed to lift the car on it's side not knowing he was thrown out . Dad went out and bought an identical car and made my brother drive it down the same road to calm his nerves . ..........your remark about the different rear lights made me chuckle . So l worked in a crash repair shop and an 1100 came in for a new rear wing .......l think you may know where this is going ! They were not a nice panel to fit . So the panelbeater fitted the wing , the painters painted it , the panelbeater put all the parts removed back on and the car was parked up for collection . Incredibly , no one hwd spotted it was a later wing on an early car. The customer came to collect it and HE was the one that noticed the mistake !!!!! And l wasn't the culprit Richard 🤣🤣

@@oldclassiccarUK I had an Austin Princess Hearse 1954 (from memory) that had built in hydraulic jacking system, you lifted a flap in the floor by drivers feet to operate, I think it was marked as blackjack but I might well be wrong.

@@oldclassiccarUK Also, at the time I couldn’t afford the cost of antifreeze so I used a couple of thick padded horse blankets to cover the engine at night, the obvious happened, I forgot to remove the blankets and only remembered when smoke billowed from the bonnet 🤣

I think you did well to change the coolant it looked quite 'muddy'. She seems to be running nicely now and starting from cold. it might be worth checking the carburettor settings just for your own peace of mind and to get that bit extra 5% or whatever. Some great cars at the meet that we haven't seen before. Austin 1100 and Sunbeam Talbot just to name two. Great video Rick thanks once again. 👍👍

I wonder if the last owner had problems with overheating? as it looks like they may have been running just straight water by the looks of the rust in the radiator. I would give the rad a good few flushes and check the thermostats. You may find that the radiator needs cleaning out proffesionally, they will unsolder the top and stick rods down the coolant passages to clear it.

You love your baby... don't you! The Pilot is a great car and you should be proud. My favourite was the 35'. Very similar to the Pilot accept a couple of differences like "Front Bumper" "Chrome Horns" just under the lights but mostly "Spoke Wheels". I think I saw one wheel near your water tank. Anyway, I wouldn't turn my nose up at your Pilot. Cheers mate.

In the 1966 l bought a ex PLA police car 12v electrics lowered suspension and 24 head stud mercury engine the two 6v batteries fitted under the rear seats giant speedometer where the central speaker was. I made a bigger bore exhaust system that by itself woke the engine up (to much back pressure) Pea shooter exhaust resulting in braking two left hand half shafts great car fantastic v8 sound Written off by a careless driver engine ended up in a wall known stock car. .after that bought a std one
