I've had diesel and gas trucks in the past but the Lightning has been by far my favorite. Drives like a rollercoaster (fast quiet acceleration), the huge frunk has loads of utility, and it's nice to have a full tank of electrons every morning. If I had to tow more than a 100 miles regularly or didn't have a place to charge at home or work, I would stick with a combustion engine.

I would love to see a PHEV 3/4 to 1 ton truck that has 80 km of unladen around town range with a range extender that gives enough power to tow it's rated load uphill with a fuel tank large enough for at least 500 km of towing range before needing to be refueled, a small turbo diesel range extender is preferred of course.

Spec wise, 0-60 is meaningless for the pickups: they're all in excess of what a pickup driver needs and wants. It's all about range, towing capacity, and payload capacity. Thinking of their mass, I'd like to know their stopping distances.

Exactly it's like saying how much weight can a Ferrari carry or tow. It's annoying people want to know it. Plus it's a heavy vehicle that can get up to speed fast are the brakes and tires capable to stop such a fast heavy vehicle? My guess is brakes are tires are engineered for towing and loads not stopping a fast heavy vehicle in a short distance from high speed.

Not all of us want or can have a high performance car and plus a truck, so don't speak for all truck owners. I love my lightning and 0 to 60 definitely has meaning, a lot of truck owners like to accelerate quickly once in awhile, I'm certainly not sick of it. If it has the range, towing capacity and payload for individuals specific needs then more isn't better or needed. I tow a trailer exactly 160km and it gives me enough, having a huge battery would just be a waste of degrading value for "ME". EV trucks are perfect when you have a predictable routine day or trip, not if random exploration and vast traveling is your thing.

Yup... unfortunately Ford is going to be stuck with these, especially if they ramped up production. They made such a big deal about charging a huge amount to get less than a 100 mile battery increase. Now the competition announced trucks with 200 miles more than their best. way faster charging, Air suspension. mid gates, 4 wheel steering. I was interested in a lightning at intro pricing and when they were cutting edge (unfortunately they couldn't make them when they were hot). Like every other tech product, the current gen are yesterdays news and there is no way I'm going to pay 100k and its missing all the new expensive stuff the competitors added. On top of all that when you try and sell it used in a few years, it will be even more outdated . How are you going to sell a 200 mile (100 towing) range truck when at time 1000mile will be the norm. I am still interested in a lightning but they are going to have to cut the price in half for me to even remotely consider what they have on their lots right now.

The takeaway here is that the current state of EV full size trucks only has a single offering right now, maybe two if you include the Rivian in the "full size" category. The rest are "coming soon" with specs TBD. Comparing what you can buy now with what you "might" be able to buy later is absurd. Why not include all the rumored specs on the Lightning redesign? Those values are just as valid as what you're getting from Ram and Chevy right now.

Ford, introduced production models in spring 2022 and has delivered ~ 30,000 to date with another 150,000 coming this year in 2023. Ford delivered to their specs. Nothing delivered or proven from anyone else, other then pretty mannequins, yet until 2024. So they say. I am sure these new vehicle specs are going to one up Ford because that is the defacto std. at this point.
@4literv6
@4literv6 Год назад
Fair points and very well stated to. It's all basically vapor ware like everyone accuses tesla of with the ct imo.👍🏻 But the t3 per farley is still 30 months away from production. And he's warned multiple times it will be controversially styled(think cybertruck or the nikola badger maybe even the ram prototype that had a lot more aero influence to it vs the actual rev truck released. He's said several time's it would get 75-100 more miles out of the same size battery packs as the current lightning does. So no reason to believe they'll up the pack sizes unless forced to. As is that would mean 395-420 miles of range for the top spec er model's. So still competitive against the new rivian max pack 360-400 mile ranges. Mid grade though against tesla and ram max ranges. Plus the atlis xt could be out around then to and they have claimed 500 miles of range and proven multi megawatt charging speeds already. I think atlis might go under though which is a shame. So around 315-340 for the base t3 trims is competitive depending on the price. A base catl lmfp or mp3 cell equipped lightning with over 300 miles of range for a dual motor purpose built ev truck starting around 50-55k? And should be eligible for the full tax credit. Well that should be very competitive against anything anyone else makes imo. It's a shame really that truck is so far out right now, and if farley says late 2025. Does that mean initial production by then? Or does it mean he expects to reach real scale production by then. I bet he knows revealing it and or the official specs will immediately Osbourne the lightning for most retail customers. 🤔

Would be 100% better if they actually built a truck instead of these luxury sedan versions...build them with work in mind, meaning put an 8 foot bed on them, get rid of all the nonsense luxury crap, drop the back doors, regular cab or extended cab with an 8 foot bed, and decent towing capacity, RAM seems to be top right now if they build their new E-Ram with the 14k tow capacity...its huge battery pack giving 500+ miles of range, would cut that down to about 200 miles with max towing, still pretty reasonable, but they need to stop catering to the people who buy trucks as status symbols, build these into work truck models with longer beds, and none of the electronic gadgetry...i.e. no touch screens, no leather interiors, etc. Just a bare bones work truck, and keep them in the $40k price point and they would sell a lot of them....many contractors go to a jobsite and are there pretty much all day, or possibly go to a few jobsites in a day, but all relatively close together, so the range would be fine for that, even if they were having to tow a cargo trailer around...like finish carpenters who possibly do a couple of jobs a day, sub-contractors who are in and out of a site within a day or couple days, etc. These are the types of people that would be buying these and putting them to work, so long bed, regular or extended cab, base model 4WD work trucks is all they should be building first...get these things out there being used as a truck...get real world feedback on them, then start expanding into the higher end stuff for the prissy wannabes.

One significant issue with electric vehicles is never being discussed: If a homeowner (or a small business) has solar (PV) panels (or wind turbines) to generate electricity, how many panels (or windmills) would it take to charge one of these trucks? A) Not a significant issue to anyone but you. B) Only YOU know how much you will drive in an average week. YOU can do the math on how many kWhs you will use between your vehicle and your home each month on average. YOU can then look up how much power your solar system would need to be in order to cover YOUR needs. It is not up to the manufacturers OR the automotive reviewers to determine what YOU might want to do to your HOME.

I am interested in how truck buyers are getting accustomed to these astronomical prices. An EV will cost at least 30% less to manufacture once the OEM's get to scale, so the current price is probably appropriate, but I am willing to bet that as costs to manufacture decrease, that savings will go right to the OEM bottom line and these vehicles will remain in the high 5-digit to low 6-digit price range. Although I like these (especially that RAM concept), you folks can have the 7yr, $700+/mo average payment. I believe that this much personal capital is better spent elsewhere. Just one random internet commenters opinion though.

Here is Virginia a base quad cab is $43,000. With all the maintenance and fuel cost the fact that the EV will need far less work on to me justifies the larger price tag. The only question is longevity. If say the battery lasts for 400 to 500,000 miles does not need the oil change and other maintenance that varies then by far the EV will out do the ICE. If you have to replace the battery at 100,000 miles that would make the difference. On that it would be how people charge it. If they supercharge all the time then they will hurt the battery and life. If they can level 2 or level 1 the battery then it will do far less damage. All for the consumer it will be better. Also do I see the dealership staying around? No I do not and I believe the lawsuits and that Ford is dealing with right now is also costing some of the higher cost.

Not a truck, but Mazda is going to be introducing a EV...that always runs on battery, but the battery will be smaller/average size and charged by a small optimized Rotary/wankle motor designed for the task. I'd love this type of approach for trucks. These Truck EVs make no sense for anyone that wants to even use them for a single annual camping trip. They just can't tow or go anywhere without planning and compromise. Great for your weekend truck for trips to home depot and your quarterly trips to the local dump but to spend 60-90K for that...hell no. I had an early reservation for an F150 Lightning when the Pro was supposed to be 40K. It took a year and a half for my reservation to order to come up and when it did there was no way to order a Pro, and the cheapest thing I could have ordered was in the upper 50's range for the small battery. I ended up buying used 2016 Ram Rebel for 20K(private sale). My use case is the weekly home depot run, quarterly run to the dump, and a few loaded up camping trips. These EV trucks are a very niche market. I don't dislike them, they just don't make a lot of sense right now, not with the limited range when used as a "truck".

My assumption right now is that the range on the Silverado EV will be moved up (probably close to 440 miles combined for the official EPA range) but the RAM REV will be moved down. On paper, the RAM has a >10% larger battery, but the usable capacity on the Silverado is 212-213 kWh, so the difference isn't that big. Also, GM has demonstrated a greater level of competency with their Ultium AWD system, and the LYRIQ AWD and RWD have virtually no difference in efficiency and range. If that applies to the Silverado EV as well, it's very likely that will have better real-world range than the RAM REV, despite the Silverado EV's slightly smaller battery. I'm also curious what type of package will be required for the Sliverado EV's 20,000 lb towing capacity. If it's available across multiple trim levels, the RAM REV doesn't necessarily have an advantage there either.
