The use of a diagonal peen hammer can be much more ergonomic than a cross peen or straight peen hammer. Today I will look at the grinding and heat treatment of a double diagonal peen hammer . part two

@@BlackBearForge In response to CCI : We turned the corner on foul weather and with that it'll stagnate. I understand a channel creators need for a high sub count but I feel its a goal that can become a means to an end. In other words, I believe folks watch because of content and personality. I feel the desire to reach some number could be seen as another form of RU-vid politics in a time where politics is in everybody's life ... want it or not. Those that have a need to be generous and must give will give. Others, may want to learn, and still others may simply want to escape their world. Channel creators beware? Keep the channel business off your channel would be; I think, good advice. Black Bear Forge has done a fair job of it.

@@JF-fx2qv Personally I feel that most people who watch John @BlackBearForge do so to learn. It's so hard for people (like myself), who are starting the craft, to find really good constant teaching on RU-vid. John doesn't go for flashy editing to draw in new people, he just gives shed loads of help and advice. To me, the more people who find his channel the better. I do understand what you mean, but it isn't always the case with RU-vid channels.

John, fantastic lesson on preparing personally made tools for customers. Your attention to detail is commendable, and should be emulated in our own shops, if we endeavor to sell our wares to others. On a comical side note. I tried to describe a "diagonal cross-peen" hammer to my farm raised wife. To her a "peen" hammer is a ball-peen. Sooooooo, my verbal description was to no avail. As my artistic abilities are sorely lacking, I endeavored to show her a picture of your cross-peen hammer, which was difficult, as it was always working on that video. I was, finally, successful and I was able to draw her a poor likeness of a "diagonal cross-peen" hammer and emphasized its' necessity. Whew, a tense 3/4 of an hour. LOL 😆 Crisis averted.

There is another technique for finishing work as well, I have a tomahawk made by a friend who finishes his hawks with what I call an as forged finish, after all the filing and detail work is put on, instead of power wire brushing he heats it in the forge and gradually adds a layer of light scale. not the flaky kind of scale but it's a layer of scale that covers all the file and sanding marks to give it the appearance that those details are forged in there.

Nice hammer John. My experience with S7 is that you have to work to get Rc 58 from it. On a big chunk of steel like that, you would probably have to oil quench it. It would be nice if you get the chance to hardness test it to see what you actually got. My guess would be more like a Rc 52-54 which is still great for a hammer.
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge 5 лет назад
Thanks for the input. I guess I'm a bit nervous about oil quenching something that generally air hardens. Even though I know it should be OK. I'm afraid I don't have any way to hardness test.
@dcw32401
@dcw32401 5 лет назад
We did a local tire hammer build using S7 for the dies. We had 10 pairs of dies commercially heat treated with a target hardness of Rc 56. They used an inert atmosphere in the oven and oil hardened them. I then did about another six pairs myself using an electric furnace similar to yours, foil wrap and oil quench. They were equally hard. If you want to test a hammer and are willing to pay the shipping one way, I will test it for you...and even return it. :-)

The belts don't seem to care that much. The big issue is keeping it cool enough to hold onto the piece. You can easily get it hot enough to burn yourself.

Could you provide a sort of chart of the steel you use and it's temperature for Hardening and the soak times that would be only your steel you use and it would no doubt have more people asking for other than S7 steel... I could go back several times but if you make the chart and post it on a video you will get subscribers and more likes... yea it's being some ones secretary sort of... but I've paused and rewound videos to capture info and forward them to others... Like the way you operate... And the whine on your polisher grinder for the wire wheel finish is indicative of the need for bearings... as a habit in my life I pull the gear cover and re lube even new models... maintenance is training and so is inventory as I've done the jobs in the Army to have mastered much of it... and some things I've found I kinda swear by 4-1/2" grinders... Dewalt is the most commonly used in my shop... 5 have met their demise after long service life... spare parts have kept a few going far beyond their own wear out time... 7 to 11 amps, are almost interchangeable but... let the factory smoke out and it's time to cut the cord... yes I've tried a couple other brands... but the need for adapters for 5/8- 11 Threads, not worth it... harbor freight models are just good at getting through a job or two and will QUIT when you expect them not to... but you get what you pay for...
