I always feel that forgiveness is the right path... but it can be an awfully lonely path when one has nothing else and those that are forgiven give nothing in return, not even an acknowledgement.

Forgiving trains you to detach your ego when making hard decisions in life. The more people your are truly forgiving in life the better your life choices will become.

You cannot forgive anyone unilaterally. For"give" has the word give in it. You can only give anything to someone, if there is a taker. You can't even give a dollar to someone, if they don't want it. Moreover, if someone steps on your toes, you can only forgive that person if that person apologises and asks for forgiveness. You tell the person "I forgive you" and what if the person steps on your toes again and again and again? Don't get confused between the word "forgive" and "moving on". . You moved on. It's like avoiding the person who steps on your toes and not thinking about the incident. Good for you.

{وَمَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ ۗ وَإِنَّ السَّاعَةَ لَآتِيَةٌ ۖ فَاصْفَحِ الصَّفْحَ الْجَمِيلَ (85) إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ الْخَلَّاقُ الْعَلِيمُ (86)} [الحجر : 85-86] ( 85 ) And We have not created the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth. ( 86 ) Indeed, your Lord - He is the Knowing Creator. {يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ وَأُنثَىٰ وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا ۚ إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ (13) ۞ قَالَتِ الْأَعْرَابُ آمَنَّا ۖ قُل لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوا وَلَٰكِن قُولُوا أَسْلَمْنَا وَلَمَّا يَدْخُلِ الْإِيمَانُ فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ ۖ وَإِن تُطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ لَا يَلِتْكُم مِّنْ أَعْمَالِكُمْ شَيْئًا ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ (14) إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَرْتَابُوا وَجَاهَدُوا بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الصَّادِقُونَ (15) قُلْ أَتُعَلِّمُونَ اللَّهَ بِدِينِكُمْ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ ۚ وَاللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ (16) يَمُنُّونَ عَلَيْكَ أَنْ أَسْلَمُوا ۖ قُل لَّا تَمُنُّوا عَلَيَّ إِسْلَامَكُم ۖ بَلِ اللَّهُ يَمُنُّ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ هَدَاكُمْ لِلْإِيمَانِ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ (17) إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ غَيْبَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۚ وَاللَّهُ بَصِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ (18)} [الحجرات : 13-18] ( 13 ) O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted. ( 14 ) The bedouins say, "We have believed." Say, "You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], 'We have submitted,' for faith has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not deprive you from your deeds of anything. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." ( 15 ) The believers are only the ones who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful. ( 16 ) Say, "Would you acquaint Allah with your religion while Allah knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and Allah is Knowing of all things?" ( 17 ) They consider it a favor to you that they have accepted Islam. Say, "Do not consider your Islam a favor to me. Rather, Allah has conferred favor upon you that He has guided you to the faith, if you should be truthful." ( 18 ) Indeed, Allah knows the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is Seeing of what you do.

I feel like the length of time it takes to forgive, depends on the severity of the injury to the soul... For example, which takes longer to heal, a scratch on the arm, or a broken arm?... And can you forgive someone who doesn't ask for it, or is it just learning to let go of the offence that has caused the injury?

Everything cannot and should not be forgiven. There are a plethora of thoughts, beliefs and mindset(s) to help you on your path to healing and self awareness. This sounds to me like forgiveness is the ONLY way and it is not

forgiveness is a weakness. those who don't forgive are bent on becoming strong in oder to stop future agression. but if you forgive you are naive thinking all will be okay, then boom like Caucasians invading countries after countries.
