Forgotten Super Villains: Charma 

Damn. Charma is a villain you can't help but feel bad for. In her original incarnation she never wanted to be evil - the world just kept screwing her over until she couldn't take anymore.

She's neat. I like characters that have counter acting flaws that are synced to their abilities.

I half expected when I clicked on this video, you would say “Hey, remember that time Starfire was evil.”

She seems like the type of villain who would be long lasting. Odd that she's disappeared.

I think the saddest part is just how truly alone she must feel. Remember: all men are sickenly nice to her, and never share their true opinions if they feel it would anger her. Meanwhile, all women hate her to the point of attempted murder. At the end of the day, she can never really connect with anyone, as they never approach her as another person, only as either lover or murderer.

"As for Charma's visual design, there's not a lot to say about it. It's kind a generic, but I can't really complain about it...if you, uh...know what I mean..." Naughty, naughty. ;) ANYWAY...by happy happenstance, I've read both these stories. Which is amazing, since I've only read about five Legion stories in my whole life. As it stands, I've always liked Charma (again, in her original format); her power is odd, but it has a lot of potential. I'm honestly surprised she DIDN'T become a larger player; a character who inspires protective instincts in some people and violent hatred in the other, with a tragic backstory to boot...that's a unique villainess, and I can actually think of several ways her powers and personality could have been toyed with more. I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

Whoa, Jim Shooter and Mike Grell? That's quite the pedigree she's got there, very talented creators. No wonder her story's so fascinating.

I love it when you point out the small creative details that just come off as odd. Your right on the money about how tragic this women's origin story was, I mean Damn.

I think her story worked well the way it is tbh. Her original backstory and all that was great, but I like the idea of the police blundering and automatically tossing her into a woman's prison without a care, leading to her reckless death. Nothing against Charma, just that it feels realistic to what a prison WOULD do and parallels the death of her parents in a mad reckless frenzy

The obvious path for this character is: She's trying to find a cure for herself, right? But she goes to a male scientist and he he immediately will do anything for her and becomes a criminal, or the scientists wife shows up and it becomes a domestic violence scene. She's a walking riot. So when she goes and steals a thing, she's doing the least damage possible. And deep down she's really lonely, because the nature of her powers alienate her from human contact. That's what I think.

I must agree with you Mr. Rogues. There is something very interesting about Charma's visual design!

I guess it doesn’t help that she also happens to be drop dead gorgeous as well with a fantastic figure to boot. Sort of underplays that involuntary charm power that she has, to almost make men feel smitten with her, when she could do that no problem? Though you think she knew that her power had the polar opposite of making women become hostile to her as well? I think it plays in to both sexes shallow urges and needs of their sub-conscious and removes all inhibitions to act out those feelings. The women can’t help but act out due to feeling threatened by overwhelming competition and in a way creates a very brutal bipolar counter measure in order to keep the balance. I got to admit that’s sort of original a power that turns out to have a very toxic curse to it that she involuntarily falls victim to that not only had a play in corrupting her, but also condemning her. I guess having super powers isn’t as glamorous as people might think and they can be a very volatile curse to themselves but those around them, kind of an interesting ploy to play on, sort of like the Midas touch in Greek mythology.

Yeah, she's a sad case. I wonder if I, jaded as I am would be affected by Charma's power?

This honestly sounds like a cool villain. Also I actually came up with a JLA Movie that has a main villain, who honestly would fit most with the big screen, and you actually covered him. I am of course talking Johnny Sorrow, now you may be asking "Wait isn't he a JSA villain". Well the thing is that in the movie Johnny after a full 5 years of planning after another 40 years of being gone, he plans on kidnapping the still living members of the JSA and or the predicesors of the dead members of the team for a sacrifical ritual to summon the king of tears where Johnny as to collect their souls within a crystal which would open the portal to the world of the king of tears. And in order to do so, he forms a team of villains known as the injustice society which includes (first time being introduced) Sports Master, Shade, Solomon Grundy, Icicle, Gentlemen Ghost, Spellbinder who is alot like his Batman Beyond counterpart but in this version was a enemy of Bruce Wayne's Batman and was in Arkham until broken out by Johnny, and Metallo who we first see for the first time in the beginning of the movie as Superman throws him in prison. So anyways after the break out of Spellbinder and Metallo, Superman and Batman meet for the first time and decide to work together and end up finding the group as well as finding out Johnny's goal, so then after seeing first hand what Johnny can do, they think they can't handle them all on their own so they band together all of the remaining JSA including the recently resurrected Hawk Man and the currently immortal Diana aka Wonder Woman, The Specter, The Atom, Doctor Midnight, Wildcat, Black Canrary, Hourman, and Star Man to warn them and also so the members could tell them all about Johnny, as well as the predicesors of Jay Garrick's Flash (Barry Allen who in this version it's revealed that the speed force spoke to him after the accident that made him the flash after the death of Jay Garrick to take Jay's place), Hal Jordan (who in this version found a dying Alan Scott after being mortally wounded during a battle with a alien named Atrocious who discovered the power of rage and used it to create the first red lantern ring, resulting in Alan being the one to crash land on earth), and The New Dr Fate. So then hearing about this and since most of the members have been long retired, they decide to keep a low profile except for Diana and Hawkman who can't just stand while they're being hunted by Johnny and his team, so then Diana proposes that she, Hawkman, Dr Fate, Flash, Green Lantern, Batman and Superman work together to try and stop Johnny. But then in the end the villains are successful and they end up taking down each of the members of the JSA 1 by 1 by knocking them out and trapping them in one place till the ritual. Then the ritual happens and the king of tears enters their world but in a big twist it turns out that Johnny just wanted to use the crystal to threaten the king into obeying him because as long as the crystal is charged then the portal stays open and the king is loose. So of course then Batman and Superman work together to free the souls of Diana and the other members of their team but before they could release the rest, they get attacked by the Injustice Society, still loyal to their leader Johnny. So then the heros fight the Injustice Society and then take on the King of Tears and Johnny before breaking the crystal, releasing all of the souls, causing them to go back to their hosts, causing the King of Tears to be sucked back into his world, but not before grabbing Johnny and pulling him in with him. So then the day is saved and then our team of heros decide to continue to work together to keep the world safe now that the other members of the JSA are retired but decide to not name themselves after their team because of them wanting to start a new legacy of a hero team, as then Barry Allen himself suggests the name The Justice League to which everyone agrees right as we get a quick guest appearance by this Universes version of Aquaman riding on top of a whale that rises from the ocean after he heard about the king of tears invading earth but he's a bit too late obviously

While Charma never appeared outside of comics, Grimbor did in a couple of episodes of the animated series for the Legion of Superheroes.

To bad, Charma would have made for a very interesting tragic villain in the DC Comics, but leave out the whole "being from a other planet part" and keep to her original backstory.

Think you can talk about Marvel's Ringmaster? Only saw him via Super Hero Squad on CN and he almost feels like a comedic villain for someone who fought Hulk and Spidey in comics

Charma reminds me of Gosamyr, a "kind of" alien villain from New Mutants who seduced "involuntarily" Sunspot and Cannonball to protect her from becoming a monster.

Is it me, or were the Black Queen and White Queen/Emma Frost of Marvel fame, and Charma of this video totally looking like lingerie models with their outfits?

I loved the original version of this villainess and your right,her gift,opposite side of the coin,curse was very unique.But let's be honest, even with the best of writers Charma wouldn't last very long.

Especially on the cover, Charma looks like evil, brainwashed Starfire.

They probably retconned her original background because her living a life of being tortured relentlessly was kinda sad and upsetting.

Charms seems like the type of villain you would see in today’s comics and tv shows. Using her powers to control men and make men do as she wishes, while some woman has to step up and save all the men while telling the men “don’t get caught up in a pretty face next time” or some junk like that.

It's been a while since there's been what I liked to call a sad supervillain.

A very horrible power if you ask women hate her and man interested in her for no reason sounds like she doesn't fit in any place

Charma and Grimbor sound like Charles Moulton villains for Wonder Woman.

I think the reason you never see her again is well she's basically just poison Ivy only she pisses women off to the point where they wanna beat her up. I mean you could do something like what they did with shriek in Maximum Carnage, have her basically throw an entire city into chaos.

I'm suddenly reminded of that one character Saffron from Firefly, who really knew how to play men, and sometimes women except Innara saw through her.

I rather liked these two in their original appearance. Grimbor's schtick was decent enough and the fact that he was clearly being controlled by Charma rather than being a full-on villain himself was interesting, and Charma's double-edged power set was interesting and her horrible backstory made her motivations a lot more plausible than, oh, 99.99% of Legion foes over the years. Looked at with a deconstructive eye, the hell planet that Charma came from raises some hard questions about just where the oh-so-benevolent interstellar government was during all that, and her absolutely needless death in prison brings up even bigger ones. Everyone involved knew how her powers worked, and that confinement with a bunch of women was a de facto death sentence. Grimbor should've lawyered up and sued for wrongful death rather than doing the usual revenge thing - but that rich bastard RJ probably would have stepped in and bought his own "justice" to at least shield the Legion, and getting thegovernment to cough up for wrongful deaths takes forever.

Here's an obscure villain that you could look at Sundown (David Lowell) first appearance "Untold Tales of Spider-Man Annual Volume 1 (1997)".

So Charma is similar to the Junji Ito villain Tomie in that she makes men her slaves just by looking at her and women are prone to killing her? I wonder if Junji Ito read DC comics when they were imported to Japan? XD

Wait I have an idea for a forgotten Spider-Man rogue, paper doll making her first appearance in amazing Spider-Man issue 559 I think? And one other cameo appearance, other than that I can't remember her making any sort of appearance whatsoever

They kind of ruin her gimmick, it will be cool if she finds the reason of why she has this power, we could even make a plot in which if she finds a girl that doesn't want to hurt her or even protect her like the other guys, she could see her as a regular person (if she can see, we could use a blind character, like the old man in frankestein)

Reminds me a bit of Mandrill, the mutant whose power is essentially being a sexy beast! It's like pheromones that control women or whatever. Crazy stuff, so I like him! Would have worked better, symbolically speaking, if he was a pig or a dog, but that they went with a rather obscure simian just makes him better!

"That's quite the bizarre power" Why? Every beautiful person in the world seems to have it. In fact my only complaint about her is that the allegory is perhaps a bit TOO on the nose. There have been many mythological seductresses (and many modern villains like Poison Ivy) with a similar theme. But I agree with you that the quality of her character (in her first appearance) easily justifies it. I think if they did her today they'd inevitably give her an LGBT vibe - like making her a lesbian, searching for that one special girl who can overcome her powers. I don't think that's needed though, because the basic theme - a person who can't control how people react to her except it manifests as unwanted attention and jealousy, a reverse of the hatred and pity for Frankenstein or the Elephant Man - is universal. Something interesting would be to give him a male counterpart, call him Charmer. It could examine how differently they use their powers and how society views how men and women would use such powers.
