Lets take a look at this fantastic old Superman rogue, shall we? See you in the funny papers! Funnyface and Superman were created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Both characters are properties of DC Comics.
Why not have him being ordinary comic book artist that made a deal with Mxyzptlk and in turn he gets his latent meta-gene activated / modified to be able to bend 2D and 3D worlds together. And intern those two going on chaotic slapstick Rampage with him getting revenge on the company that fired him for wanting to keep the old school comedy intact and not use the medium to push their propaganda.
I'd love to see a more modern take on this character. I can imagine him being written as a fourth wall leaning reality breaker, either played for comedy or potrayed in a horrific light (what with his ability to turn people into drawings).
Vinnce12 Interesting opportunity with that too; it would be meta if his goal was to himself gain enough power to leave the realm of comics and into the real world, even if it means destroying the comics to do so
You know when I first looked at the image for this video, I thought it was going to be about Boss Smiley, another forgotten super villain and the archenemy of "Prez, the First Teen President Of The U.S.A"... sorry, thought I'd make it sound more epic. Anyway, Boss Smiley was basically just a crooked businessman who happened to have a big smiley face for a head, until he was reinvented by Neil Gaiman as a malevolent spirit that tries to manipulate and corrupt Prez. He also happens to look almost identical to Funnyface, to a point where you could reinvent as brothers... OR EVEN FATHER AND SON! Well anyway, another great video.
Funny face would make a great guest villain on the flash tv show. A bitter comic book writer, who gains the power to bring comic book characters to life and traps Barry in one of his comic book! That would be amazing to see.
I've actually known about this character for awhile and I totally agree with everything you said. Funnyface (or a descendant or successor or SOMETHING) absolutely should be a much more used character than he is and I'm pretty baffled why they've never done anything with him outside those three stories. Out of all the long forgotten weirdo Golden Age super-villains I've seen this one probably has the most modern potential.
I figured out the list of Superman villains at 0:09 to 0:22 "Lex Luthor" "Mr Mxypitlk" "Parasite" "Toyman" "Brainiac" "Terra-Man" "Prankster" "Amalak" "Kryptonite Man"
Holy crap this villain looks creepy as sin, another great video i really enjoyed it. And BTW I am first lol. Why did superman have all the useless but cool if done right villians.
It'll be interesting to see him in modernday. He could go against Superboy or rather the whole Superfamily. This guy is disturbing but imagine he's used in the DCEU (or what ever it's called) and he puts the entire league in comic books! XD Just imagine the JL of the DCEU meet another version of themselves like Earth 6 (becuase the Flash there had a Wonder Woman Comic) or any comic Earth! I could just imagine how hallarious that'll be... It'll also be super tragic when the ccomic League finds out they're just comics though. :(
Tao Jones T.jones Kinda thr point but in here it is 'real' people going into the comic world. This can allow for more stylization and technically more money. (If they make the comics seprate but have enough in the movie for people to know what's going on before getting in the comics).
Yeah, Funny-Face is pretty neat. My only problem with him (besides the lack of an actual name) is that his powers are tech-based, rather than an organic origin like him having a Metagene, which in my opinion would make him much more intimidating and a bit easier to justify as a concept (yeah, him being a Meta makes more sense to me than him being an inventor...comics are weird). As such, I'd suggest giving him the ability to turn any organic matter his hands touch into sketches, and sketches into organic beings. If I had to add anything else, I might have him be Japanese-American (mostly because I actually presumed him to be a very racially-insensitive drawing of a Japanese guy the first time I saw his mask years ago, and the idea's stuck with me ever since) and show him dabbling in Manga as well, if only because Manga has a ton of stuff that could add variety to the action sequences...plus I really like the idea of Jon Kent (whose apparently a bit Anime fan) simultaneously geeking and freaking out at seeing some of his heroes come to life.
I wouldn't mind him being reinvented as a meta - that might work even better, as you say. Also, I really don't think there's supposed to be anything racial about him, it's just supposed to be a funny cartoon face.
Oh, I don't see him as a racist character now; it was just my original perception of the character from the first time I saw the design years ago, and since I knew that the story was from the 1940s, which wasn't exactly the kindest decade for Asians in any medium, I made the assumption that he was intended to be Japanese. I quickly learned the reality of the situation, but by then the idea that he's Japanese was already set in my head, and the character's so low-tier that I doubt anyone would care about the original ethnicity anyway so long as the character himself was interesting, which we all already know he is.
It would be really cool to see him in the dark multiverse and in the multiverse that being said I think he would be considered OP in today's comic just add the meta gene to him.
Like he wants to replace all dc heroes with young diverse versions of themselves. Make him a parody of Micheal Bendis! They could do a lot if they wanted.
I would re-imagen him as a washed up comic book artist who lost his job over a disagrement with his boss and deside to take revenge by bring to life all comic book superherios from all comic publishers. It would also be comentay on the Comicgate movment and the decline of the medium.
I would actual base the new Funny Face on Brian Michal Bendis, Mags Vasagio, Eathen Van Sciver, Mark Waid, and Frank Millar. Hate me if you want to, but I would pit him against other DC Herios and here there are... 1)Batman 2)Nightwing 3)Green Arrow 4)Supergirl 5)The Flash 6)Silencer 7)Wonder Woman 8)Superboy(John Kent) 9)Shazam(Captian Marvel) 10)Sideways 11)The Tarifics 12)Titans 13)Birds of Prey 14)Supersons 15)Justic Society 16)Superman Family 17)Suiside Squad 18)Justic Leage 19)The Outlaws 20)Teen Titans What do you think of my choices for Funny Face to go up against?
Alan Moore made a Wonderful Tribute to the Original “Funny Face” Story (and Classics Comic Characters of the Newspapers and his creators) in his Historic Run in “Supreme”. That’s Right; Funny Face is a Great Character that needs The Mythology of Superman with Masterstorytellers like Grant Morrison, Tom King or the Great Alan Moore Himself. My Congratulations for your Videos.
How i would revamp him that he would be like the DCAU's Trickster, lost and confused, and a metahuman to bring comic strip characters to live and turn peoples into comic book inks where he would've had trouble of controlling his powers. Also, i would not him be a member of Superman's rogue gallery, i would possibly has him be part of the Doom Patrol's rogue gallery instead. Cause, why? I don't known...
A villain who use to be a comic artist/cartoonist that brings drawings to life is such an awesome idea... I think I'll steal it. But honestly. I'm loving this Funnyface character. I love everything about him. He needs to come back!
Funnyface is a funny villain, literally he is. I feel like there is no love for forgotten rogues since they appeared in one shot comics and haven't made any appearances on media, well in cameos that is. I just like his face, it's very underrated and obscure. I hope Funnyface returns soon, It will be nice to see him again in pop culture, and who knows, he could become friends with the other Superman rogue Mister Mxyzptlk, and they would team up to defeat the Man of Steel once and for all.
It's a bit like the old PC game Comix Zone where a comic book writer gets pulled into his own comic book by the villain of the comic and has to fight his way through it. The villain draws enemies on the panels for you to fight.
Really wish DC would put out a Mr. And Mrs. Superman trade that collects all the stories from Superman Family, as well as Action 484 where they get married.
Wait hear me out. A Superman/funny face movie taking place in the real world. A bunch of super villains are brought off the page in a tiger rabbit style adventure. With super man accidentally joining them.
I like the idea of the modern comic strip being satirized*, and Funny Face is a good vehicle for that. Just make it so his machine has some kind of explanation -- most likely likely empowered by Mr. Mxyzptlk (either trapped in his own dimension or bedeviling another universe's heroes) to settle his ninety day appointment with Superman -- and then get on with the story. I notice that his henchmen all seem to be bad guy versions of popular comic strip characters of the time: Alley Oop the caveman, Dick Tracy the police detective, and a black hat version of the Lone Ranger, etc. I'd love to see this done with modern comic strip characters, such as a bank robbery committed by a "family sitcom" comic strip such as FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE, or a giant-sized Garfield that actually swallows loot whole, to be retrieved when he "poofs" away back at Funny Face's hideout. And as for why ALL-STARS bothered to revisit this particular Golden Age Superman story? The writer at the time was Roy Thomas, and anyone familiar with his work will tell that's an explanation in and of itself. * A good example happened during the Spider-verse saga, when the main villain visited the world of the abysmally-written SPIDER-MAN comic strip, and found it seemed to be trapped in a weird out-of-whack passage through time, causing people to repeat their actions, thus extending any chain of events much longer than in a normal world.
Believe it or not, I actually am familiar with Funnyface. I've read both of his Superman stories, though I don't think I ever read the All-Star Squadron one. (If I did, I don't remember doing so, but since it seems they are both more or less the same, I guess that's not such a bad thing.) I haven't read either of those stories in ages, and I remember thinking the character was pretty dumb as a kid. HOWEVER, I re-read them before commenting here, and...yeah. I actually think you're right. Again, he's obviously a goofball villain, but goofballs aren't necessarily a bad thing. And since he's such a meta character, it seems almost obvious to keep him around! I have to say, I can't see him as being one of the A-listers - those villains that pop up over and over and over again, sometimes till you're sick of them - but I can see him as a fun little "bonus villain." Someone who pops up every couple of years for a story arc and then vanishes for a while, or plays supporting roles in stories featuring other bad guys. He kind of reminds me of the Queen of Fables - another underrated villain, whom you may recall (I named her on one of my lists), who has the power to control fairy-tales. Anyway, there's a lot of potential with this guy, so hopefully he'll come back, but I somehow doubt it. Still, hope springs eternal!
I don't really see him as an A-list Supes rogue either, I see him popping up all over the DC universe, kinda like Dr Polaris. When his theme is 'comics' he really shouldn't be tied to just one comic character. I do indeed remember the Queen - another candidate for a future video!
Imagine if Funny-Face and Control Freak from Teen Titans were related. Now that I think about it, Funny-Face and Brushogun from Teen Titans Trouble in Tokyo have a bring drawings to life gimmick, but Brushogun’s was magical in nature.
Siegel and Shuster really went meta before going meta was even a thing. In another story, Superman bullies a spindly little superhero-comic cartoonist (reportedly based on Jerry Siegel himself!) who isn't, in his eyes, working hard enough--despite the fact that Hitler is out to assassinate the guy for his satire. Supes disguises himself as the artist's goofy-looking hero (named, of all things, Geezer) and rescues him, only to threaten to drop him to his death if he doesn't stop slacking off.
If I was him, I would have someone draw me the most hideous, biggest, vicious, monster I could think of. And then bring it to life. That is, assuming that the ray would let me control it as well.
I like the idea of bringing comics to life. If I could write a story with him for DC I would make a few changes: Funny Face would make characters alive by drawing them, it would make him more creepy and intimidating, and he would use an existing characters, like Shadow, Watchmen and Space Ghost.
Man what a gonzo villain. He definitely feels like untapped potential widj he wouid get used again. Any chance you can do a vid on thunder and lighting from superman 303
Awesome video for an interesting and bizarre rogue. I am wondering if your going to do more comic book reviews. Maybe a Batman Long Halloween review this Halloween? The choice is yours rogues. It's only a request.
No, I wont be reviewing Long Halloween, but I will review the new Scarecrow miniseries 'Batman: Kings of Fear' once it's completed. Something else may show up as well, although I've got no plans right now.
+Mr. Rogues Alright, thanks for replying. I didn't even know there is a scarecrow miniseries and he's my number 2 rogue. Looking forward for that in the future.
I like him. I kinda wish they brought him back. BTW, can ya do an episode on the Walrus? I just really like the loser villains in Spiderman's rogues gallery.
An embittered comics creator turned to villiany? I'm innocent. I have an alibi. It wasn't me. And yes in the 1940's he could find plenty of villains to use. Just not what we think of as supervillains. Green Lantern vs Ming the merciless. Batman vs Flattop
Rogues, I've been a fan of comics my whole life (all 12 years that is) I've kept up to date with online comics and know a lot about them, however I have never collected them and am just starting to, I just got my first one a few days ago being the long Halloween and I loved it! Any suggestions for more comics?
Well, for Batman I guess you should get 'Year One', and seeing as how you loved Long Halloween, you should probably get the sequel 'Dark Victory'. You can always check out my various 'top 5 stories' videos for villain-specific comics.
The problem with using Funnyface nowadays is the fact that, well - he's FUNNY. Yes, there are darker undertones to his methods, but overall, the character kind of demands a slightly goofy 'yes, we know this doesn't make sense; who cares?' approach to the medium - and I'm afraid that's become increasingly rare these days (at least, done well). DC especially has become so dark lately that I shudder to think what they'd do with Funnyface - they'd probably use him to mock the 'older generation' of comics and show how all these characters he brings back are secretly psychopaths or something.
In all honesty, he's pretty interesting in the golden age but I can't see him in the darker world of today's comics when even Calender Man is considered to be too goofy. I'd like to see him appear in some sort of tv show or comic series that uses the more lighthearted tone of the gold and silver age.
I found this cool website just google comic influences than put in a batman film like batman begins and it'll illustrate scenes from the movie and compare them to panels from the comic's
