In case some of you have missed it, the EU has voted on Article 13 - and it passed. Very sad news indeed. Nobody quite knows what exactly this means and what will happen, but it could have catastrophic effects on our internet… Don’t expect anything to happen soon though; implementing new laws always takes time - some even say it will take up to two years before we start seeing any change.
So either Article 13 happens first and I lose all internet freedom OR Brexit happens first and I keep my internet freedom but my entire country's economy goes down the drain instead. What a dilemma.
Turner is one of those villains whose silliness belies how truly dangerous he is. I remember learning about him when I was younger, and was left wondering what inspired his creation.
@@matti.8465 Well, yeah... Feeling bitter is understable, we all go through issues like this. As long as you don't go homicidal and misogynistic. And I was joking for the most part.
I mean their old'timey mustaches would completely throw him for a loop, if anyone smart still left at Marvel would have fun with this guy. But knowing most writers they employ these days they'll just have him kill young people for not voting Republican of course.
If his recent appearance in Superior Spider-Man says anything, he does! In fact in his own words: "He was resurrected by The Dread Dormammu to eliminate all hipsters"
He probably wouldn't care much for Boomers, either. In fact, if you don't remember a time before television, Turner D. Century probably hates your ass.
I have never heard of this guy, but I already LOVE him. And without even reading his stories, unlike you, I say he really should come back! Imagine what you could do with this guy in our modern age; we're in a place and time where nostalgia is basically an enterprise. People are always trying to go back to things that made them happy, or make them believe in a better, more Utopian time. Sometimes this is good and healthy...other times, it becomes obsessive or dangerous. It's important to keep the past close, but also important to adapt. This guy embodies that, I think, and you could come up with at least a couple of great stories just based on that theme alone.
As whacky as this character is, I feel he could have easily become a horror character. The whole idea of a kid raised in isolation in an artificial fantasyland by a well-meaning but disconnected recluse could easily have made for a fun, but disturbing Batman TAS episode.
Unfortunately, the time is rapidly departing when it's even POSSIBLE to use Turner D. Century - not in any way that makes logical sense, at least. The term 'turn of the century' is starting to mean a whole different era than it did when it was coined back in the 20th, and Turner's adoptive parent would have to be aged up to an implausible degree to maintain the illusion of 'this all happened in the last few years' that comics have to maintain to keep their timeline straight. Without retconning cryogenics or time travel into the mix, his origin is difficult to keep relevant in the modern era. That being said, I do think there's some cool stuff which could still be done with old Turner, if one were to overcome these hurdles. The theme of disillusionment with the modern world is essentially ageless - there are a good deal of things I'd bring back from the past, if I could, and I'm far from the only one. I think it would be interesting if he actually DID manage to turn back time, only for him to realize that he's actually far more of a modern man than he thinks, and that he doesn't fit into the era that he's fetishized so much any more than the present - a 'be careful what you wish for' sort of story. Those are usually good.
@@redjirachi1 Except he's very specifically tied to one era, so I doubt he'd go for that. He thinks anyone past WW1 is a morally bankrupt yahoo; fun as him having ties to, say, a groovy '70's pimp-gangster would be, I think he'd be horrified at the very notion.
Sorry, incoming lost post. I had so much fun with how to re-introduce the character. I am intrigued by this rogue. I think he could work nowadays given what happened with the EU and article 13. A man raised on old-fashioned values leaning towards radicalized methods to try and restore the world or at least a town/country to the "golden era." Maybe have him be inspired by Doctor Doom and how he got an entire country to bend to his will and obtain diplomatic immunity. He could re-introduce colonialism. Alternatively he could be a Typhoid Mary (maybe he has Tuberculosis) of sorts, giving a better reason for his isolation and a reason his enemies don't touch him. His gimmick would be to weasel into politics with his riches and convey his prejudices and biases by using statistics and facts as his weapon. Can't call him out if he's right. I recall a Robin story where Robin got called out for saying all drugs were bad and could get you jail time yet cigarettes are bad but perfectly legal. His design wouldn't have to change either save for the umbrella. A sadistic twist on the classic song "Daisy Bell, A bicycle built for two" but using the parody version where the fellow never got the girl and instead got insulted. Insistent that no woman could ever match his standards but keeping the dummy as a way to ward off any accusations of being a "confirmed bachelor" or a "tinkerbell" since that would blacklist someone back then. Maybe for his weapon, he could have an army of intelligent ravens who spread propaganda since ravens can be taught how to talk somewhat. The ravens have spurs of their feet for fighting as he would have no qualms about animal abuse. Maybe he has a collection of animals that were used for fighting back then like bears (bear-baiting), roosters (cockfighting), dogs (dogfights) and spiders (more a Asia thing but it exists). He, himself, would be a bare-knuckle boxer or challenge his adversaries to an old-fashioned duel with pistols or swords. If they refuse, he uses the animals. Keep his adoration of the elderly. Maybe make him a advocate for elder rights as his cover, but he is truly passionate about it. Have him be a preservationist. Maybe he obtains a legion of supporters who would overlook his nasty side, like Doom. Keep him Spider-Woman's foe, and he sees her as a representation of 70s feminism that ruined men. Don't go too political but have him be concerned about how men are treated nowadays. Lastly, have him DESPISE Red Skull. Red Skull is the one person he can't stand being compared to due to his Nazi ties. He feels the Nazis ruined any chance of people appreciating the classic days as many beliefs people had back then got corrupted by the Nazi movement. There I'm done. As to your video, I enjoy learning about these neglected ne-er do wells. While you feel he deserves to be left in the past, I am willing to see another go at him. Thank you for your video this really inspired me today. ^_^
I feel like this villain could be more of a serious villain if they simply altered his wacky tendencies in the comics and made him a person who simply wants the "way of the west" to come back and really hates anything to due with the government and regulation. This villain seams like he has a lot of potential, just need a writer who changes this character around.
Ah yes Turner. I must confess I've always had a soft spot for the old fellow. But he was used so rarely, I can't declare great affection. I was sadden when he got killed off. But of course this is comics. That sort of thing never sticks. Which is good because I am going to have to disagree about a return engagement. Modern Marvel writers probably couldn't do him justice, but he's hardly a character beyond saving. Oh true he'll never be anyone's A list rouge. But you need the C listers to pop in on occasion.
Am I the only one who thinks this guy sounds like a Carmen Sandiego villain? The design, the punny name, the wacky gadgets...just make him less murderous, and you have a winner. XD Also... "Poor Turner. I guess he couldn't find a real girlfriend. I can relate to that. That's why I have a dummy dressed up like Catwoman on my bicycle's backseat." ...Why is it my first thought was, "Which Catwoman is she dressed as?" I...I think I need to see a shrink...or a growth...or maybe nobody. We're All Mad Here. Also...really? J.M. DeMatteis never wrote a Penguin story? Not once? At least, not to your knowledge? (pauses) Huh. I am...genuinely surprised and disappointed by that.
I think that he will fit better as a Magic User rather than a guy with crazy gadgets, I mean he has a flying bicycle instead of a broom, make him a wizard really out of time character by actually being from a century ago, the dummy can also be like his puppet/bodyguard, I can even think of some super heroes using their logic against him, like challenging to a duel.
They can still be pretty wild these days. Like that time she fought the head of a beef company who was remote controlling an entire town through motion controls thanks to selling everyone tainted meat. And the day after that, the entire world got destroyed.
arkinyte13 : At least the Kangaroo started out with a plausibly formidable gimmick before he became a joke. Spider-Man villain the (original) Tarantula started out with a ridiculously stupid gimmick, but was repeatedly treated as a serious threat.
Those who wish to turn back time, are bound to fail, for even if future is to take a different course and our times to fall, you couldn't ressurect what used to be, that is one rule of them all.
I like this Guy. I think if they do bring him back, they should update his skillset, though. I think the design, personality and theme of the character would be served quite well as a time-travel based Villain, possibly with some mild reality/time altering powers.
They should make him an iron man villain in my opinion, Stark is building new inventions and technology that progresses the world in ways Turner does not like, so he tries to kill him before he can do any more damage
Turner D. Century recently appeared in an issue of Superior Spider-Man vol2 #9, he is beaten by the Superior Spider-Man and almost beaten to death until Peter Parker Spider-Man steps in, he even jokes that he though Turner was dead
I find super-villains who dress anachronistically -- the Prankster, the Gambler, Toyman, etc. -- like Turner interesting, but I agree his original stories play out the character best and, unless someone thinks of something really interesting with him, he should be allowed to rest. (Sadly, his second story with the "time-horn" is kind of a repeat of an AVENGERS story against the Zodiac gang.) Apparently, Turner and Hardy got separated in the inferno and both thought the other dead, as DeMatteis did a CAPTAIN AMERICA story where Hardy turned up alive. He wanted to make up for what Turner did, but ultimately wound up continuing Turner's mission, kidnapping psychics and boosting their power so as to reshape reality back to the "good old days". In the end he did from psychic backlash along with two of his captured psychics, both of whom were racists who had threatened to warp his proposed reality realignment. There was a third Hardy story in AVENGERS, but it's too weird to explain; here's Hardy's Marvel Appendix page -- tinyurl.com/y5nsqsob -- if you're curious. Believe it or not this was a DeMatteis story too, so as much as it seems his character was being hijacked and misused repeatedly, it was his creator doing all this.
That Spider-Woman run gave us some real oddballs. You should take a look at Daddy Longlegs sometime - another tragic supervill that can be blamed on Hank Pym's research.
Turner D Century would’ve been a great opponent for Falcon Cap. The Hood brought him back to life so he’s still out there. Bring him back as a Falcon foe.
Imagine being a civilian in the Marvel universe. In a cosmos with Galactus, Many-Angled Ones, Red Skull, Amatsu-Mikaboshi, Doctor Doom, Nihilus and Thanos, you get offed by Turner D. Century. The most embarrassing way to go. I'd rather get gooped by Pastepot "Trapster" Pete!
The shazam villain? Mr.mind is my favorite shazam/captain marvel/captain thunder villains of all times and I would like to see him in a shazam 2. and no not as the main villain but at least a side villain, the real one should be black adam.
I'd honestly become a super villain, create my own super villain team and have The Wall join it specifically so that when we get into a fight with a superhero and I have to call upon him for help, I can say "BRING ON THE WALL!"
An idea i had once, was if turner appeared in an all ages story, like the marvel adventures comics or in a wacky marvel cartoon- turner reimagined as a music man style con artist, perhaps using high tech equipment to mind controll people trough old timey music. 1. I really liked music miester from the brave and the bold cartoon, and thought turner could work as the marvel equivalent 2. I really like some old timey showtunes 3. I think it would be funny seeing this guy mind controll heroes like captain america, black panther, hawkeye and ant man into singing a barber shop quartet or the like XD
Fantastic Video of Another Underrated Great Character that is More Than a Goody Villain. Also The Father of Centanary D. Turner have 2 more Tales Against Captain America and Next as a Inmortal Menace in the Pages of The Avengers! Very Recommend Stories by the Always Wonderful J.M DeMatteis.
Let him stay in the past, where he belongs, where he's happy. I have a character just like this... But she's a girl who time travels and likes this future world where she's free to ride bikes. And she was a imaginary friend I used for a replacement mother figure. If that dummy on his back seat had a south bell curly hair, a white bonnet, an apron, a rose theme, and was a black lady wearing white makeup then it'd My lovely dearest Maud Melody Moo. Mostly because I never seen her face. Because I based her on a faceless doll my grandma had. Yes that was her name. I can relate to that no girlfriend thing, alot... Is it weird to be wanting to date your imaginary replacement mom who doesn't ever show you her face?
To me turner D. century should be brought back because I actually like him. a villain who prefer the old times than the modern time, that sounds pretty cool.
Turner D. Century could been a notable prude and a regressive for bigotry. He could have allied the Watchdogs or become a pawn of Kang who should live in the past.
Deadly obssession with an idealized past? Leading to racial hatred and rejection of modernity? If you made this character today it'd bee seen as an obvious jab at conservatives, but I suspect it was an obvious jab at conservatives back then, too.
