PART 2 - eNCA's senior reporter Xoli Mngambi in conversation with former president, Thabo Mbeki as he pays tribute to Winnie Mandela and the legacy she left behind.
Thano left SA for Tanzania in 1962 under ordees from the ANC, after his father was arrested at Revonia and sentenced to life imprisonment. From Tanzania he moved to Britain wher he complited a Masters degree in Economics at Success University in 1966. He remained an active student in politics and played a prominent role in building the youth and student sections of the ANC. He worked at the ANC office in London with the late Oliver Tambo before he was sent to Soviet Union for the Military training in 1970. He later went to Lusaka to become the assistant secretary of the Revolutionary Council. Over the 5yrs he became active in Botswana holding discussions with the government about opening the offices of the ANC
A very good point there, sir (19:40). I strongly agree and I think we are continuing doing that. We never respected that generation. Maybe, former President, it could be good to embark on a national lecture series to teach of these people in order to honor them and make use of those who are still alive.
I believe the ANC bailed on Winnie Mandela. They forgot how much she moved the fight forward with her fearlessness when all these male leaders were in exile. She was human and she made mistakes yes, but I think she was the one who kept the movement and pushed it in the end. Mandela yes spent years in prison but Winnie lived a life of constant harassments. To me, she is the hero who has not received her dues yet from the people of South Africa
The only problem with South Africans these days is we expect our leaders to be saints, all these people a who are saying all these things will one day turn back and re-write the history and acknowledge President Mbeki for standing for the truth when it was unpopular thing to do.
It would have helped a great deal if such a series could have been conducted while Mama Winnie was still alive. SA, take note of this interview. it is rich. I like the statement you said, "...so that Winnie doesn't die ...". Sir, this removes every negativity one may have of your relationship with Mam Winnie. It shows that you respected her and acknowledges her contribution in the struggle. We, the people, loved Mam Winnie, for example, I am still not happy she never became the first lady. Be that as it may, we can learn from both the negative and the positive history that is part of her life.
The questions are not focusing on the bereavement but on the historical issues that may not fit in the current mood. Very informative though and only fitting in a general sense.
I am not surprised at all!!! He was in exile enjoying all the benefits. When he came back to be in the leadership of the ANC. He had huge problem with Winnie. We all know that all the cowards who went on exile and those who were in prison. They had a huge problem with those who remain here and fought. When they were back they had problem with Chris Hani. We honestly don't know who killed our Chris Hani. Why some-1 from ANC instructed body guards to be on leave that day. No one in the ANC ever came out and clarify that. They had problem with Winnie ending up sabotaging her. Peter Mokaba was poisoned by the same sellouts. His sickness was the result of poison. The same necklace he had problem with it. It is the same necklace which put pressure on PW Botha for him to resign because of UDF.Only two liberating movements which made Apartheid government to think twice about its system ending up removing some apartheid laws. It was 1976 riots under Biko which Winnie took the whole movement from Soweto and made it a nation wide movement. Where was Thabo that time? Second movement which made apartheid to fall is 1984 to 1986 riots. These ones were spearheaded by Winnie, Allan Boesak, Desmond Tutu, Lekota, Peter Mokaba. Where was Thabo with his big mouth? This Mbeki guy is the same guy who was the president for two terms and his presidency benefitted the few not the blacks who remain here and fought for freedom. Economic improvement benefitted the already rich. Nothing we as poor people we ever gained via Mbeki presidency.Arms deal, the big corruption scandal. He is in the centre of it!!! What happened to FIFA money with his African diaspora nonsense which never work instead it was just corruption. This is the same man who was an enemy of Gaddafi in Libya for the idea of uniting Africa. Maybe he thinks we don't know. That is why he immediately form NEPAD or something like that. I don't know if that nonsense still exist. Mbeki legacy!!!! If you notice, all the militant revolutionaries whom played major role in liberating the country. Mbeki had problem with them!!! I would love to know his legacy Pre-1994 and After 1994 during his presidency both terms!!!!!
Before you make generalised statements about all exiles, read up a bit and you will recognise that Mbeki's role in the liberation of South Africa, and the establishment of AU and African Renaissance cannot be compared to anyone. Those who know Mbeki's character (not from media propaganda) will know that Mbeki always lacked empathy, but has been true to his opinion and is never shy of being honest about his opinion. Winnie's place in History cannot be taken away nor can anyone erase it (whether good or bad). I can even dare say without fear of contradiction that her role was greater that of N. Mandela in her own right. All in all, Mbeki played right in the hands of, eNCA who sought to discredit Winnie and taint her legacy (deliberately personified eNCA), and who better to interview than Mbeki; the man who empathy is not his strongest characteristic. Hence, his eventual demise. If you clearly listen to the narrative of Xoli's interview it has nuances of Winnie as an ill-disciplined ANC member, who was not fit to be DP (The narrative which the Media and the very ANC championed in the 1990). Hence he diverted to the question of Phumzile, to hint at the fact that Mbeki administration had no problem with matriarchal leadership, but as long as it is not winnie. It is sad to see so many black people continue to be white supremacy gatekeepers, in companies like eNCA and associated main stream press (e.g. Media24).
The fact that Mbeki record need me to visit Library while Winnie Mandela track record to liberate this country is there for us to see. That alone speaks million voices
I think everyone had a role in the liberation movement, cadres are not the same , they do not have the same skills, qualities but integrating our strengths to eliminate our individual witnesses is what makes the ANC a great organization!
While we mourn the passing of this great parent of the nation, let us remember that we are all passing on this planet. Each of us has a task to fulfill while alive. Again, we need to know that life after death is another destiny of man. We need to prepare for it. All men, both black and white, famous or obscure, rich or poor, politician or rank and file, all pass through death. What happens thereafter depends on how you lived here on earth. I will talk about this later, in a little more detail.
Very straight forward individual, we don't need to speak only good about you when you have passed on. But his character has mature like that of Scottish whiskey, very strong, however smooth on the tongue!!!
He did not care for us. He did not care for Winnie who also fought for him. He needs to bow down and acknowledged what she done for us and stop trying to justify his actions. It is not about him.
Segatlhamela M it is not the time. He would not lose anything to acknowledge her. Doesn't matter what ever relationship or squabbles he had with her. It is not about hero worshipping. She done more what he did for us. But yet again he wanted to be the hero. His day will come soon when we will hear about his role in the armsdeal.
Segatlhamela M no you are wrong. I don't hate him. I was a victim of apartheid . I know what Winnie meant for us during that time. He was not South Africa, he wasn't near us. And as a woman and a mother I take hat off for her. He have no compassion for that. I am crying for Winnie. Life was not fair for her. May she rest in peace.
Belinda Sonn I guess you didn't listen the whole interview, wait who said we must praise and say only good things when someone passes away? If you heard the man very well he states the good and wrong about Winnie not acting all Goodly and glorious. I think that's what we should be doing as humans.... not la nto umntu xa eswelekile kube kuthiwa ebelungile. Uba umntu ebengu Tsotsi makutshiwo uba ebengutsotsi ebathatha apho angabekanga khona, siphinde siyichaphazele lo nto uba nangona ebenjalo ebengumntu obathandayo abantu kwaye ezenza izinto ezintle eMphakathini, hay le nto yobe kuxokwa ngabantu kuba bengasekho, nibe nisithi nivelana nabo. Thetha inyani qha the good and the bad things about the person. NgesiXhosa yila nto kuthiwa kukumkhulula alale ngoxolo, yenziwa xa kukho umlindelo.
What is Thabo Mbeki legacy? What role did he play to liberate this country or let me put it like this What role did he play to economically develop the black people of South Africa in his two terms?
Professionally it was very unbecoming to knock another man’s wife in the head during the people - who love her dearly. In any organization there are rules and regulations to deal with anything behavior that is against the normal cause - that shouldn’t be done in the open - it is demeaning...
You can't neglect the negative or wrong things done by leaders, we need to address and talk about them in oder to avoid next generation of leadership repeat the same wrong things, President! Mbeki is indeed a truthful leader who is not prepared in selling the truth, he doesn't care whether you are a world icon and what position you're holding in the society even the country and the worldwide truth must be told,
As much as we have great respect for d former president for his governance management and his African dream nd poetic skills, he has failed Ma Winie reduced her to ashes d atlas woman figure statue that kept South African liberation at hand. An academic that neglected her request at d conference as our constitution says justice delayed is justice denied, is he trying to bring reasoning to South Africans of his act or reconciling with her beyond d grave? Hope she was here to respond!
The deference between Mandela and Mbeki is that Mandela was a well polished leader who knew how to get the best out of every individual, Mbeki is a straight talker which could backfire at some cases like it just did now, he could've outsmarted this interviewer
You know I respected what I thought was great leadership from honourable Thabo Mbeki but with the new truth from George Fivas, the investigator who received a call, I am hurt that 10 years of your leadership failed to clear Mam Winnie of her involvement in Stompie's death. It is painful that she was forced to carry that stigma with her to the grave. This very stigma is the reason she was called bitter names and instead of mourning at the very instance of receiving news of her passing, people resorted to all sorts of insults
People who know nothing about Thabo's history believe the lies about him not being involved in the struggle ,he was very much part of the struggle ,It was the plan for Thabo to go get education so that when blacks get power whether by way of military or Democracy he should then become the President and balance our country economically ,so before we make our comment let' s get our facts straight.
I don’t understand South Africa. It would seem that if you are of a certain colour you can do no wrong. Racism swings both ways!Neither is right. This man only spoke the truth. People don’t like it but that’s tough. It’s still the truth. If South Africa is to move forward all the racist crap has to stop and if people do wrong they need to be called up on it and the public not live in a state of fantasy and one sidedness.
If you think the right thing to do is to tell the people of South Africa to storm land and take it there is something wrong with you. Let’s see how you feel in 30 years when sa’s economy is down the pan. Malema should be arrested for his hate speech. He is an out and out racist.
as a leader for a country plagued by violence against women it was disgusting to watch an entire head of state push her like that even if it wasnt mam Winnie Mandela no man has a right to treat a woman like that no matter how its justified had it been a Tom ,Dick or Harry they would be in trouble Thabo mbeki had issues with Winnie as karma would have it Polokwane made him feel exactly what mam Winnie felt that day
This guy spoke about everything else BUT Winnie and when he did speak about her it was cold. He just wanted to give a lecture on his own observations. Aloof to the end.
Once crowned president you just be one. Title stands. He is not a presiding president but he is president. If you are a doctor you stay a doctor whether you are not practising
He didn't have to. I'm not a fan to thisa praising and liking of certain individuals. U Mama Winnie was liked buy the us and the public. So that was enough
All those comments he made about HIV and he's a genius? Laughable. Giving speeches and writing poetry does not make one a genius. What was so genius about his administration?
Thabo hated winnnie, he embarrassed her in public two times in publicly. Thabo was in exile having a good life when winnnie fighting for our freedom. He feared her, because he knew Winnie was going to win the vote of being a president. I don't like you Mbeki
Trumpet is founding and Christ daily living from Legos Africa is a social studies teacher and a civic education teacher as my cousin Sheila Cobbs whose father is a police and she is also some type of a teacher he said a secondary school does he mean children a secondary school primary school is an elementary school a secondary school is a middle school ain't it I asked him and he said yes it is Judy Sheila Cobbs my cousin and her father was a police in the Lakeland Police department Mr Leo Longworth and my mother
this man is a sellout no doubt, he was jealous of Winnie because even after her death Winnie is still loved by ppl, i even forget we once had him as our president. He fired his former friend Zuma based on alegations, he didn;t have a gud relationship with his father they even never saw each other for 30 years!. He also lost his only son and youhg brother, so yeah he is a broken man you can see he is fininshed.
People say he did not like winnie Some say he feared her why is it only now tht he is saying bad things about her... my fellow south african mr president was, only giving answers to the asked questions nothing else No fear No hate Straight up anwsers
so Mbeki you had a problem with Winnie for liking attention?what are you 16 ?she was an icon it is automatic that she would generate attention late or not what hogwash for such a smart man
He didn't deserve the opportunity to speak or to attend Mama Winnie's funeral. Mbeki can't speak in the light of what took place during the struggle, where was he??? He knows nothing! Period! Bloody bastard 😠.
It a pity I can't make you understand. Every ANC member was in struggle at the time. In the country or in exile you could fill it. It was better in exile or prison than here with the oppressors . So Mbeki knows every thing even more than us we we hiding in the bush and underground while the were gathering and feeding us with the info and current state of affairs. Without them sasizobuya singayi noba sithethe abaphi
