I've always thought it was more powerful that we the audience don't know exactly what Forrest says. Like, we can all guess about things he said, but he clearly said something very profound and that just makes it more interesting/impactful

People give Jenny such a hard time, but she was a seriously damaged person, she was running from the sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of her father when she was a child, no wonder she was messed up. Its nice that she eventually realised Forrest could give her what she was searching for all those years, its just a shame it took her so long and that they didnt get too long together.

I disagree being abused is no excuse She sleep with say she loves him and run. She only return to Forest because she was sick and dying. It is her choice to love or not to love Forest but to use him like that is bad. If she didn't get sick I doubt she would ever tell Forest he has a son.

I have to agree and tbh relate personally. I have so many regrets about the way I've treated people in the past and have only now, after therapy, understood that I pushed people away because I felt I didn't deserve love and was less than everyone else.

You can tell those who are ignorant about the trauma of sexual abuse and see Jenny as some kind of villain instead of a tragic figure to be pitied. Different people respond differently to severe abuse in childhood. Back in the 50s and 60s even 70s, there was not the kind of therapeutic services available to people. They did not speak of such things. People just suffered in silence. You were essentially on your own. It is a good thing to have compassion and empathy for those who are damaged in childhood. Those who have empathy (a higher EQ - Emotional Intelligence) are able to forgive people their weaknesses and damage and see things from more than just one side. Forrest has unconditional love. Forrest is the fortunate one. He had a loving mother who taught him how to love. Jenny had no idea what love is, until it was too late. She is actually the tragic figure here. People like that blame themselves. Think they are a burden and undeserving of love. They will literally run from those who love them the most because it is too painful.

@@alieninthecaribbean You can forgive on allot of things. on her sleeping with him and running away but after she got her life together not telling him he has a son was a concise choice by her, returning to him when she knew she was dying was a concise choice. It shows a manipulative and selfish human and if Forest was a little smarter he would have picked up on that like we the viewers pick up on it.

I think Jenny was afraid of real love because of her childhood abuse and that's why she returned Forrest's letters and stayed around people who weren't exactly healthy for her for so long. It is not because she wants to hurt him in any way. Maybe Jenny feels she doesn't deserve his love. I can see how someone may misunderstand Jenny though if they don't fully understand how such things affect people.

Absolutely agreed, abuse - physical or emotional- can really impact you for a lifetime and make it difficult or impossible to form healthy relationships with people who are “good” for you. It’s foreign and you don’t feel comfortable or worthy of such love or care. Or they feel that they will “taint” or ruin this good person because they know they are toxic. I always took this as that Jenny loved and needed Forrest, which is why she never stayed away. Once things got comfortable or “good” though she panicked and left. That was until she became a mom and didn’t have that option anymore, she had to work on herself.

I also agree. She truly did love him. She didn't want to be the 'toxic' to Forrest that she grew up with. I think she deep down wanted him to remain innocent. And when she saw him on the news and realized he started his 'run' after she 'ran away' from him, she knew she had in fact become toxic to him. And wanted to fix it. He was the only one to truly love her. ❤

Fun fact: Gary Sinise who plays Lieutenant Dan is actually the lead singer of a band called Lt. Dan Band and they do performances for the troops!

Gary Sinise is one of the celebrities i want to meet. He does a lot of lectures for the Nixon Library where I work. I can't wait for us to fully open again so maybe he'll come back and speak!

being a teenager named jenny when this movie came out was an annoying experience lol. after a couple of years i got a personalized license plate saying “jennay” and people next to me at stoplights would grin.

What's funny in this movie was Lt Dan saying "the day you're a shrimping boat captain, is the day I'll be an astronaut" and Lt Dan's leg's being "made from the same material used on the space shuttle", both Tom Hanks and Gary Sinise starred in "Apollo 13 released the next year in 1995 (another fantastic Tom Hanks movie).

Forrest's father is not on "vacation." According to the novel, Forrest's father was killed while working at the docks. A crate of bananas crushed him to death.

They pioneered a bunch of visual effects for this movie, mostly atmosphere like adding color to sunsets. For JFK they actually animated frame by frame his mouth and spliced Tom Hanks in existing footage.

Well said. There was probably no time in her life she could actually cope with her problems. She only knew how to run from them. She doesn't feel like she deserved Forrest. "You don't wanna marry me" had that implication. But Forrest is still the one thing she can always come back to because he never changes. She hasn't really had a real home before but in a way, Forrest was her home. And that last part where she contacted Forrest to tell him about their son and getting married, it wasn't about using him. I saw that as a gesture to secure their son's future in every way. Being a full family. Especially since she knew she had a terminal disease. And she had able to put her life back together and sort things out before she felt she might finally be deserving of Forrest. At least that's how I saw it when I first watched the movie. Maybe that was just me.

If you havent seen The Sixth Sense, i really advise you watch it. The actor who plays Forrest's son is in that, along with Bruce Willis. It's not a comedy though.

Well it was for me after the movie I laughed because waiting in line some dumb girl exited an earlier showing and asked her friend “WAS THAT HIS DAD?” I thought she spoiled it then after put together how stupid she was.

A lot of people hate on jenny for hurting and using Forest so much. But she was trying not to hurt him the whole time and she never used him. Not intently. She was messed up and she knew it so she tried to stay away from forest as much as she could to protect him from her. She also really did love him which is why she kept coming back. And that is what caused her to hurt him so much.

I love the song choices in this movie too, they fit the scenes they're in perfectly. This movie is as close to a perfect movie as I've ever seen: great acting, great writing, great themes, hilarious, great drama, great cinematography, great everything!

A heart warming movie. Many dislike Jenny, but she was raised in an abusive home so never learned to trust or love those around her. And a life of mistakes , like many of us, but she got in touch with him about his son. You talked about living the 'free' life. Back in those times, the hippy lifestyle was pretty much glamorized. In reality, many who ran off were robbed, beaten, became addicted to drugs and spent many nights sleeping hungry on the streets.

Most people when they watch Forest Gump are really frustrated with Jenny because they want her to be a “reward” for Forest, especially because at first Forest seems to be unrecognized for the good things he does. But Jenny has to be her own person, has to heal and have her own life, before she can be with Forest.

If you like Gary Sinese, I highly recommend you watch The Stand miniseries from 1994. A lot of the cgi was cheesy as hell, but he plays an awesome character.

This movie is the very definition of dramedy. If you liked this one then may I recommend The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by David Fincher starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett . It's similar in a lot of ways about following an unusual guy through his life as he intersects with 20th century historical events and such. Less of a comedy than this was but still very good.

When this movie came out putting the characters in the real news clips like with Kennedy had never been done and it was cutting edge at the time for it to look so authentic. Also, making Lieutenant Dan’s legs disappear was new. I remember talking with my dad about it when it came out and I said something about how real his missing legs looked. My dad said, “Sweetheart, the actor is missing his legs in real life.” I said, “No, he’s not.” And my dad just smiled and said, “Well, then how did they make them disappear like that in the movie?” Then later when he learned the truth he was just in awe.

Robert Zemeckis didnt direct Catch Me if You Can, Steven Spielberg did. This movie won the Oscar for Best Picture and won Tom Hanks his 2nd consecutive Best Lead Actor Oscar. It is one of the most iconic movies of the 90s, and they even named a restaurant chain Bubba Gump Shrimp Co, and is filled with pictures and different things related to this movie

One of my absolute favorites ♥️ MAN the 90s were on fire!! This movie is truly magical. According to Tom Hanks, when Forrest gets his audio cut off at the podium while talking about Vietnam, he says “Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don’t go home at all. That’s a bad thing.”

Right here ... this is what made Tom Hanks' career. He had been in tv shows and movies before this, but this was the movie which proved he was more than an adorable young man. This was where he proved he was one of the greatest actors of all time. I still can't watch this movie without crying. Forrest Gump is one of the most lovable characters ever written, and Tom Hanks sells it perfectly!

I remember watching this on replay for year. Starting at the age of 3-4. And i absolutely love the movie, even though i was to young to understand. I didnt get the tru meaning until i was about 9. Im 23 now

Fun Fact: Bubba Gump Shrimp Company Restaurant & Market is an American seafood restaurant chain inspired by the 1994 film Forrest Gump and it was founded in 1996. The company is based in Houston, Texas. they also have Bubba Gump in your country (Canada). I follow so many "reactors" that I can't remember if *you've* seen the movie Castaway. If not, all you need to know is that it's Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks. ;-D If you haven't seen it, you should check it out. Btw, yes he did Back to the Future movies, but Catch Me If You Can was Steven Spielberg.

It's easy to dislike Jenny. To me she's a person who just keeps making mistakes of varying degrees throughout her life. And come on now, no person can say they made no mistakes in their whole life! But this is such a great movie and no one should drink that many Dr. Peppers!

She didn't think she deserved good things. Her dad was sexually abusive to her, and sexual abuse makes people feel utterly worthless - it's why she went from horrible person to horrible person and didn't stay with Forrest, she thought she deserved the miserable life she had.

I vividly recall first seeing this during my brief stint in the Naval Reserve (cried like a baby then, cried again watching the highlight clips in your reaction). It's clear why it's so popular. 🍫 Thanks, Timothee! And you nailed it... the ability for a character to evolve over time is utterly satisfying (just as with real people in real life). It is difficult to see how much time 'Jenny' seemingly wasted... but she was very traumatized. Sadly, the world is filled with such folk. I understand why everyone hates Jenny, but people fail to take in to consideration that she grew up thinking abuse was love. She kept telling Forrest the whole movie that he didn’t know what love was but in reality it was Jenny that didn’t know. Everyone also seems to get upset that she barely introduced his son to him after 3 years, but there was no way she could have told him any sooner because he was literally running across the country for those 3 years. I also think that she wanted to marry Forrest in the end not because of her sickness but because she finally understood what love actually is when she had her son

One has to be as pure and loving as Forest to empathise with Jenny. Childhood abuse will often negatively affect relationships in later life.

@@susanmaggiora4800 Yeah, I loved how he used people he already worked with throughout his career. His wife has one of the best line's in the movie. Even his other one, Larry Crowne, is fun, for me anyways, lol.

One of the first movies I watched when I was a little kid. I didn't understand most of it and avoided it for very long after that. Just a couple of years ago I decided to actually watch it and it's so deep and wide and feels-filled. Really good movie and you've got a nice reaction video here :)

As a Christian I think alot of people struggle with faith because they feel like Jenny, they don't understand how God, or anyone can love them despite the mistakes they have made. Yet because of the cross, God reconciled us to Himself, that we may come to Him and be His friend, and His child. That we can live by His strength and the transformation of the Holy Spirit to live better then we did.

Forest knew Jenny didn't deserve him. But thats the thing about love, as it says in 1 Corinthians 13; "...Love keeps no record of wrongs..." Forest understood this, despite not understanding much else, he knew what love was, for his fellow man, and for his Jenny.

Tom Hanks actually had a completely different voice worked out for Forrest, but then he met the kid who was cast to play Forrest as a little boy, and that was his natural southern drawl, and Tom loved it so much that he adopted it for the role.

The author of the book, Winston Groom, deserves a lot of credit for his genius story and then the movie making geniuses did a wonderful job of bring this story to the movie. If Jenny wasn't abused her life would not have been so bad and in reality Jenny and Forrest saved each other all of their lives.

There are movies I am in constant battle within myself on which one is my favorite. My favorite after this one. I was 7 when this came out, so I did not grow up knowing that this was a masterpiece. It just is for me.

Not starting Tom Hanks, but you should watch A Fish Called Wanda. A lot of the Monty Python alums along with Jamie Lee Curtis made a more normal movie than their usual fare, and the humor is right on line with this.

I watched this movie for the first time around year 2000, I was growing into adulthood, and starting to be more receptive to sad feelings movies bring you. It may be the second of third movie, after Le Huitième Jour (the Eighth Day in english) and around the same time to Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the Fireflies) to make me cry.

To be honest, I didn't really like this movie when I saw it the first time. I thought it was overly dramatic and that they piled on the emotions way too high. But, 25 years and several rewatches later, all I can say is that I was wrong. The things I didn't like back then, I've come to realise are actually what gives the movie its very unique charm. It was always a masterpiece, I just had to grow into it.
