Foster Brooks was the only person in this whole series of Dean Martin Roasts who consistently destroyed the dais every time he appeared, especially Dean Martin. Always my favourite roaster. Thanks Mr. Brooks.
What is so amazing about Foster Brooks is that he never breaks character. I don't think I have ever seen him crack a smile or laugh while in character doing his bit. When you have a room full of people laughing it's extremely difficult not to laugh at what you just said or did. He was definitely the tops at his game.
Yes, and as soon as his bit is over, he *COMPLETELY* breaks out of character and becomes his regular self. I saw this show when it first aired---I was eighteen.
Foster Brooks was no Harvey Korman who couldn't hold a straight face telling a joke even if his life depended on it. Brooks was in a class by himself. He was just side-splitting funny and to think he never drank . LOL.
I remember watching this as a kid. We'd watch these roasts just to watch Foster Brooks. He never disappointed. Even my folks, who hardly ever laughed at anything, were in tears. RIP Foster Brooks. You were a credit to your craft!!
I watch this whenever I’m feeling a little bit down, it works every time. Foster Brooks comic genius. When you have Dean wiping his eyes, and Don Rickles laughing so hard he can’t stop, well, it just doesn’t get any better.
Roy Boy...... Boy, you sure said it! It just does NOT get any better than back then!!! I, also will access these videos when I am depressed. I do NOT feel depressed for long after having watched them!!!
When a man like Foster Brooks can make professional comics laugh just by walking to the podium, & the antipation, well that man is a TRUE COMIC ABOVE OTHERS!
This is one of Foster Brooks best performances among so many brilliant ones. Dean Martin cannot help but laugh from start to finish and Don Rickles has that truly infectious laugh a real combination.
I remember watching this with my dad when I was probably Ike 6 years old. I didn't know what drunk was but thought it was hilarious. I remember my dad laughing so hard he couldn't breath and almost pissed his pants laughing. I knew it must be funny when that happen. When I recently saw this I now realize how funny it actually was. And the fact there was no swearing is unbelievable!
The fact that Rickles and Deano were basically on the floor shows you the brilliance. Normally with these roasts they cut the mic at the tables, but leave it on at the podium. For the primary mic to pick up Rickles basically wetting himself at this point makes this even better the more you watch it.
I have watch at least twenty times this roast made by Foster brooks and is just spectacular, the reaction of Don is magnificent and they are having a great time. Fosters owns the stage and keeps every one laughing constantly during his performance, good thing Will Smith was not around in those days
FOSTER BROOKS MASTERED THE DRUNK. HE HAD ME IN TEARS LAUGHING EVERY TIME I SAW HIM. THE ONLY PERSON THAT CAME CLOSE TO FOSTER WAS DUDLEY MOORE IN THE 1981 MOVIE 'ARTHUR'.
The best part is the people sitting there were hearing this bit for the first time, they were almost giggling at the thought of what he might say next.
You notice how these guys can rib each other, bring wives and significant others into the joke, and everyone knows it's pure humor. No one is taking a swing at anyone or spewing profanities. It'll never be like that again.
Foster Brooks was great....he would do the drunk bit almost at every roast and he always pulled it off without it ever getting old and worn out.....classic old school comedian.
Absolutely, my brother and I had a great time trying to be Foster Brooks. This is one of the best clips ever - his roast of Lucille Ball is awesome too.
His routine is less than six minutes, there isn't a single vulgar word, and he totally owns the stage. He has Don Rickles about to cry, he's laughing so hard, and the others on stage as well. Pure talent, class, and confidence.
Wouldn't you just once have loved the camera to pan back so you could watch the whole table of guests react? My gosh...I've never ever heard Don Rickles laugh so hard in my life!
I've actually had the fortune of meeting Don Rickles once, many years ago at the Resorts Casino in Atlantic City. It was his last performance after having done around 30 years there. Truly a class act. He was a pistol off stage as well as when he was on. He was the best at his style of comedy. Foster was in great company the night they roasted Don!
It's mind-boggling when you think of all the comedy legends on the stage alone. I've noticed that there are some in attendance who are in the audience. I mean, wow! I see a very diverse table of people up there. In this day and age, when all people want to do is call each other racists, these people actually made fun of themselves and each other and laughed about it.
@@Pandemos more to the point how did foster brooks manage to keep a straight face? He had them in tears of laughter on both sides now that is pure talent. March 2021 🙏❤🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🤤🤣🤪🙄😁😅😃❤🙏
Besides the brilliance of his jokes and gags, the technical aspect of Brooks' voice control with all the stammering, belching and stuttering while still remembering his routine was brilliant. They broke the mold after they made this guy. A true comic genius...
Deano was crying with laughter on this Foster standup brilliance, Dean could usually keep it together but not on this night. Classic, real entertainment by the masters.
He was a truly talented comic. Kept his audience in stitches and tears with laughter, with acts that had no vulgarity, no profanity. Pure, unadulterated talent, the likes of which we haven't seen since. Alas, the new comics base their routines on profanities and denigration. Foster Brooks was truly a class act. Loved that man 😅😂
This particular roast HAS to be one of the best of all time! My gosh, how blessed we were to have all of these folks as a part of our culture back in the day. I miss them all.
As a kid, these roasts were always funny! Foster Brooks became a favorite and you can see why - he has the whole panel in stitches! Laughter is catching, and when I see Dean Martin and Don Rickles both cracking up it makes me laugh harder! Thank you Mr. Brooks!
Brooks had no equal. He could just stand there and have his audience in convulsions. I remember those roasts and always looked forward to the shows where he appeared. This one is a classic.
I'm a Brit and I just love this old time Yanky humour, delivered by exceptional professionals. These were the days when we knew how to take it on the chin and were not looking to be offended 24hours a day, or offended on behalf of others. Shame to think they're all gone, because we'll not see their like again.
copferthat That's what truly breaks the heart. I'm not sure how it is in the UK, but the FCC in committed an act of war when they took Saturday morning cartoons off the air. When I was a kid (before I got into school) I used to watch Saturday morning cartoons and Saturday night British comedies.
Agree with you. The world has become too sensitive. A funny joke these days will get you fired. This was Hollywood's Golden Era. The actors were special back then. Today, it's known as Hollyweird.
I am a huge, massive even! fan of Foster Brooks and I think this may be his finest 6 min or so of any of his many many funny performances as part of Deano’s Celebrity Roast shows. That part near the very end when Brooks mispronounces Mrs. “Ric Ric Rickles” causes Don to just dissolve into repeated out of control practically violent style laughter as he has just lost it at that point! I really miss both these gentleman as they both played a big part in shaping the whole Vegas/Carson wing of comedy during the 70’s.
When we were watching and enjoying these NONE of us ever realized that eventually when they were all gone we would be left with garbage for entertainment.
To me, this is his funniest skit . And he does it all without cracking a smile . He looks at Rickles as if he cant understand why Rickles is laughing !
I was blessed with a studio singing career that spanned nearly six decades. My fondest memories we from being part of an 8-voice backup group on the Dean Martin Show for 6 years. I can’t say enough wonderful things about Dean. Just a total delight to work for. And I always loved it when Foster Brooks was on.
@Diana Lee Thank You so much for all the entertainment you provided to my parents, grandparents, and ourselves...I remember all the truly hilarious skits and songs and guests from those shows, and we were truly blessed by You and Your Peers...Thank You Very Much for So Much...God Bless You!!
If only the younger generation saw the shows from the 70's and earlier... no cussing or swearing. Just plain funny! I keep coming back to these old shows in a bid to retain my sanity. I hope these videos live forever.
@Pirabee actually I think it was more of professional ethics. I heard Red Skelton say once that he knew 1,000 dirty jokes but he felt that if he couldn't make people laugh without being dirty he wasn't a very good comedian.
It is strange that until now no one has ever said that these videos of the past help them retain their sanity. Because until now that is exactly how I have felt. So atleast that makes two of us. Well put.
In the 60s 70s in the 🇬🇧 we had Tommy Cooper, in the 🇺🇸 you had Don Rickles. People who made people you cry laughing just by walking on stage. There aren't any funny professionals around today. Political correctness and trying to be clever comedy have killed show business.
I am sooo glad I found this. To see Don Rickles overcome with laughter and Dean Martin wiping tears put of his eyes is classic! I watch it regularly and keep skipping back to the 5 minut mark to hear Rickles " cackling" with laughter.
I've lost count of how many times I've watched this over the years. It is an incredible performance by a great talent. They don't make them like this anymore. In fact all these guys in their own way are just so talented, some comedians, some straight actors but true professionals all them
You don't see talent like this today, their all trying to teach you about wokeness or some other political agenda. I truly miss all these old shows they were very entertaining.
It is totally and virtually impossible to keep a straight face while watching this video, the intense uncontrollable laughter of everyone present is so extremely contagious that you just can not help but laugh just as hard as everyone else, except for Foster Brooks himself, how on earth does he keep such a straight face while going through such an intoxicatingly hilarious routine, he is truly an amazing unbelievable comedian! it would be the ultimate challenge to watch it without laughing as he does! Unless you are complete without a sense of humor!
I love how, as soon as Foster's getting up, he's straight into character - making walking to the lectern a delicate balancing act between drink and gravity
