When young, vibrant, and gorgeous Boo came to Kitten School just days after giving birth to four kittens, I was thrilled to have them all. Boo came from a hoarder house, and she was pretty thin, but she was lively and her personality was brilliant. Although very young, Boo was an attentive mother. But even more so I could see that she was an exceptionally loving cat. She practically danced with joy when you were in the room, always wanting to be petted, and instead of meows she made sweet little trills! I knew she would be an amazing companion for some lucky person, and I often told her that once she was done raising her children, she had nothing but naps in the sun and the love of her forever home to look forward to. For Boo, I was certain that the hard days were over.
But when she was diagnosed with a serious illness, it was a race to find treatment for Boo. The only treatment proven to work is not legal in the US, but after a flurry of text messages and Facebook connections with cat rescue people all over the county, I was able to obtain it. With high hopes, we started Boo on the injections, and waited to see if she would recover.

When I took young momma cat, Boo, and her four newborn kittens into foster care, I was filled with hope for this beautiful young family. But when Boo was diagnosed with a deadly disease, I had to make a quick, and controversial, decision in an effort to save her life.

FIP took my little favorite at the shelter I volunteer at. It sure broke my heart. She was a special girl and had a special mark on her nose This special mark I believe is a special gift from my LORD in heaven. This sweet cat helped me not to give up and get better from the 5 surgeries I had in 14mos. I wanted to get back to work so i could see my girl. She passed 2 weeks after my last one that was a check that I didn't developed cancer where a polp was removed 6mos earlier. The day after her passing I heard a special song about tear drops and rain drops. Look up "Blessings " by Laura Story on RU-vid. It is a pretty song.

Thank you Laura for sharing your story about the kitty at your shelter. I do believe these special creatures come into our lives when we need them most; they also can leave it for reasons it is hard to understand. 💕

Someone gave me a peom after her passing. She was a friend for a reason and a friend for a reason. I needed to recover fast so i could enjoy her. She was a special girl. I heard the song the day after she passed and I hadn't known it yet. It was in our Christmas Catata that year. When I heard the chorus I had tears in my eyes whenever we practiced it that year. I have the CD and I think of her. In practice upon hearing it 3 of us cat lovers said Bettylou at the same time. I had a neighbor draw a picture of her. He did a great job and one copy hangs at the shelter next to our adoption board. Her fav place to hang out in the OR window. She can see the OR where her pic hangs.

I'm sorry for your loss. I've lost cats to FIP also; I became aware of the treatment but like Boo FIP had advanced too fast to help my boy. I look forward to watching what you learn about it. Thank you for covering this topic.

Hi there. I was skeptical of the treatment when I first heard of it, but after I did a lot of research - including published studies by Cornell Veterinary School and other esteemed and reliable sources about this medicine, I realized it was working for many cats with the disease. There's Facebook pages dedicated to helping people buy the treatment, and many have had success. Of course, since there's LOTS of money involved in all of this, the different Facebook pages compete with each other for customers, and talk trash about the others. But I do believe the medicine works, if you can start it in time. I'll be researching more and when I think I have enough good, balanced info to share, I'll make a video or two on the subject. Thank you for the comment!

I'm so very sorry to hear about Boo's passing.😔 She was a Beautiful girl & a wonderful Momma to her babies. Thank you for doing all the you could to try to save her life. God bless you for your dedication to your rescue work! I pray her kitten's do not get sick w/ FIP. My heart was broken 3 yrs ago when I found out that my beautiful girl Alicia had FIP, and that I could do nothing to help her! I spoiled her as much a possible, until the day I Knew that it was time to say goodbye. It just Broke my 💔. 😢 I'm so glad that you will be doing a video all about FIP, and definitely want to know about this medicine! I will share the video far & wide with all my rescue friends, & cat lover's with hopes that more kitties lives can be saved.

Cheryl, I am so sorry to hear that you lost your precious kitty to FIP. I will be making more videos about the disease, and also the treatment that has been curing cats from it since it was introduced in 2019. It's only available black market now, which is just terrible, because the pharmaceutical company that owns the patent refuses to release it for veterinary use. Thanks for taking the time to comment. ❤️

Thank you Adrian. I feel very lucky that our own cats have all been very healthy most of their lives, and 4 out of the 6 are over fifteen years! I wish Boo could have lived to be someone's special pet. She would have loved that.

😢😢😢 As usual, thank you so much for your ongoing love, dedication and research for the betterment and welfare of kitties everywhere! I felt especially sad about Boo as I have an older cat I kidnapped from a park colony almost six years ago who looks a lot like Boo (except fatter now).

Thank for the sweet comment! I was really looking forward to finding Boo her forever home, because she would have loved being someone's special girl. She had the sweetest, almost bubbly personality, running this way and that, wanting to give you kisses, then racing around to play with toys. Her love of life was inspirational. Now I just have to make sure her kittens have a chance, if they also develop FIP. That was the promise I made to her.

Hi Caroline, Good Catch with Pamela. Some Ferals have had just enough handling when they were kittens so that their fear is cut way down. I can imagine this happening when they were very young and still part of the Kitten Pile. Sometimes Little Kids, from about 4 to 9 I guess, will raid a Mother Cat's Lair and take away all her kittens, which is a very bad thing, but more responsible kids might just play with the kittens and put them back. Other times a Feral Mother might be part of a feeding stations and so the kittens will see Humans in charge of the Food and so such kittens will only ever be Half Feral, since they associate Humans with Food. I've also heard that some feral cats have a relatively rare trait where they simply do no fear humans, like they are a kind of Evolutionary Jump waiting to happen with Domesticated Cats... sort of Super Domesticated. But, yeah, Caroline, you've developed good solid instincts for sizing up cats. Good Going!

I am still puzzled as why some cats are easier to socialize than others. I had a kitten of similar age to Pamela recently, and although I was able to find her a home, she wasn't nearly as easy o befriend as Pamela has been. I think sometimes it just comes down to individual personality, just like people are. Some make friends and adapt to strange, new environments very fast, others shut down. I like your idea about the "Evolutionary Jump" and I actually think you might not be far off from the truth. At some point, thousands of years from now (if the earth is still here as we know it), domestic cats could lose their wildness completely. In my lifetime though, feral cats will always be something I have to deal with! Thanks as always for the very thoughtful and intelligent comment.

As you know, we lost a cat to FIP about 4 years ago. He was a stray kitten a friend found in the road, rescued him, brought him to work with her that morning, and we took him. He was the, if not one of the, greatest cats we ever had. He grew up apparently strong and healthy, loving and affectionate; slept with us every night his entire life. But then he started losing weight and became a little lethargic. When he stopped eating the alarms bells went off. It took three tests to diagnose him and it was FIP: fatal at the time. He died less than a week after his diagnosis. Watching that cat die was the worst experience of my life. To this day I haven't forgotten him and would take him back in a minute if it were possible regardless of how many cats we have. I'm hoping to get some videos up on You Tube one of thee days. We have video of Luke when he was a happy, seemingly healthy, kitten and lot of pictures in his adulthood. If FIP is now curable, that's great news but I hope I never have to find out for myself. Your channel is the only one I watch that has addressed FIP. Flatbush Cats also lost a rescued stray one to FIP but hasn't done any in depth videos about it.

Hi there, FIP is a terrible disease as you know. It takes cats in the prime of their lives. And there IS a cure, but the patent for the medicine is held by a pharmaceutical company that refuses to release it for veterinary use. They probably see more profit potential in a human use, if one can be found. I will be doing a much more in-depth video about FIP, and about this treatment and what you have to go through to get it. It's only available black market, and it's VERY expensive. Fortunately there are channels to obtain the meds that help guide you to reputable sources for it. It's been an eye-opening experience. I just wish I could have saved Boo, but it was too late for her. But It's not too late for her kittens, should any of them develop FIP. (pssst, I think we're keeping Lolly, the adorable gray tabby and white kitten I show in the video. My husband and I haven't actually talked about it yet, but I think that's what is going to happen!)

@@KittenSchool If you keep Lolly, you know she gets a good home. We could have taken our stray, Baxter, to the local animal shelter but knew the only way we could be sure he gets a good home was to keep him. I wonder what another owner would have done when he developed the $3000 ailment we dealt with this past summer? As far as our FIP cat Luke, he showed no signs of the disease for about 2 years. As a kitten and young adult his health checked out perfectly. I'll be interested to know more about the medicine for FIP. It may be a savior for many cats. I hope so.

At the time our cat was sick the vet told us the disease would only be transmitted if the cats fought with each other and sustained a bite wound, same as FIV. But it is something they can also be born with. Your kittens re probably healthy, but the disease doesn't show up right way. I'm told there is a test for it, but expensive, so most people don't do it.
@KittenSchool
@KittenSchool 2 года назад
Yes I heard similar about contagion for fip. The disease itself is still quite a mystery, as so many viral diseases tend to be. Only time will tell if any of Boo's kittens will develop fip, and if they do, it will probably be within two years. FIP takes cats in the prime of their lives, just like with Boo.

@@KittenSchool Please keep us posted as to how your kittens are doing. I've been told there is a test for it but it's expensive. I've never followed up on that.

Hey, can you tell me what happens to the cats that doesn't get adopted but are very friendly? I am a foster from India. Most people here don't adopt cats. So majority of the cats we take in are to be released back. I managed to get my mom to adopt one. The second one had to be euthanized. The third is undergoing treatment for hernia and will be released near my parents house, and my mom has agreed to feed him. There is always a fear associated with getting a call from the rescue team. I have 5 cats in an apartment my own, all rescues. The 6th spot is for the foster cat. But after releasing this one near my family's home, I know my mom can't take more either. So I was wondering how the process is in other countries.
