Kaley is a three-year-old brown tabby who loves doing cat yoga on her cat tree, birdwatching from the catio, and eating. She and her sister, Orange Blossom, live in the house next door to Kitten School with my mother-in-law, Judy. Both girls are vibrant and healthy, until one morning when Kaley started vomiting and didn't stop...
Now, Kaley sometimes wolfs her food down so fast she throws it up. But this was different. She kept heaving even when there was nothing left in her stomach to empty. I suspected she'd swallowed something, so off to the emergency vet we went.
One hour and an x-ray later, we learned that Kaley had indeed swallowed some kind of string. The vet would have to operate immediately to remove it before it got further into her digestive tract, where it could twist around the intestines. If this happened, Kaley could die.
But the surgery went fine, and when the vet called to let us know what exactly he'd removed from Kaley's stomach, we were shocked!
Spoiler: This is a happy ending, but the surgery was very expensive, and although Kaley got through it fine, some cats don't. In this video, we will take a look at some of the seemingly innocent things that are lying around almost every household...and that could easily kill your cat.

When Kaley started vomiting, I knew it wasn't just from eating her breakfast too fast. An emergency trip to the vet revealed the surprising thing that she had swallowed, and it took surgery to remove it. A warning to anyone who cares for cats - even the most innocent everyday item can be deadly! Let us know if YOU have a cat who ate something it shouldn't had, and what happened.

Rubber bands and paper clips are another thing cats love. We've caught some of ours in the act, but always take whatever it is away from them before it's swallowed. Fortunately, in our many decades of cat ownership, we've never had one ingest something they shouldn't but we keep a sharp eye out.

Very helpful video. Did you know how long wax a dental floss? How long the cat threw up? I thought it’ll pass through? Thanks

Even worse with thread & string, the barbs on their tongue do not allow them to stop eating it once they start, or spit it back out. Their only option is to keep swallowing it (unless someone sees it happening and can pull it back out for them).

OMG yes this is terrible! I had someone who adopted a kitten from me and the kitten swallowed a thread with a needle attached. Fortunately they were able to surgically remove it, but it was awful.

You can't let your guard down for a minute with cats and other pets. We had friends many years ago whose dogs would eat just about anything including prescription medicines and flash cubes. (Does anybody remember them?) They had to get their stomachs pumped a couple times.

Happened to my cat, we could remove it from her stomach from her mouth since she hadn't swallowed all of it yet, threads are dangerous!

So glad Kaley made it out ok! It was so wonderful when your mother in law adopted two of your bottle babies and joined the cat community!

Yes, Kaley is one lucky little girl. She still won't let me hold or pet her though, she hisses and scratches when I try! But she loves her mom (my mother in law) so that is all that counts. We love having them next door. They have a nice screened porch where they can watch the butterflies in my flower garden.

It's so easy to forget that cats will sometimes eat things, or swallow accidentally! Thanks for the comment.

This is a good case for investing in pet insurance. I have it on my cat and it only costs me about half of what I pay for my cell phone every month. It’s well worth it.

I've taken to tossing floss into the toilet bowl and flushing it because I know if it goes into the trash, one kitty in particular will go through there and end up with it! Your story was a good reminder and something I had not previously considered (food particles on floss)!

Great idea to just flush the floss!

We once gave our cat one of those wool balls used for sewing as a toy. Saw it in cartoons and movies, and she liked it. About an hour later I found her chewing on it so I pulled it away from her, only to find out she had already a lot of it inside her stomach, 1 meter at least, not kidding. Luckily she was unfaced and it came out very easily, but maybe some minutes later it would've been a terrible event. Since then, we keep everything thread-shaped that she can swallow away from her. THIS IS IMPORTANT. Don't leave soft, swallowable thread shaped stuff where your cats can grab it!
@KittenSchool
@KittenSchool 2 года назад
I completely agree Jorge. If I’d seen that string ball toy at the house before I would have tossed it out. Before we learned what exactly Kaley had swallowed I was convinced that was the culprit. Toys like that should not be sold! I’m so glad that your kitty is okay and that you were able to intervene in time!

Decades ago, when my wife was a kid, one of her cats ingested a piece of string that did wrap around her intestines and killed her. Her mom did take her to the vet, but it was too late. I'm sorry Kaley had to have such major surgery. I had hoped there would have been an easier way to get the dental floss out of her system. We are very careful about things left around that a cat might chew on, especially our little mischievous boy Thomas who's into everything like your Sing-Sing. We also have to be careful what we leave on counter tops as Thomas loves to slide things off onto he floor. One of our Christmas glasses got broken that way about a month ago. It's like having kids except they never grow up! :-) I'm happy your mother-in-law's cat is OK. Often times pet owners aren't that fortunate. Losing a pet to anything other than old age is very hard to take.

Yes, Kaley is very fortunate that we were able to get her to the vet in time. She's completely recovered and as naughty and active as always. She likes to do things to make her Mom (Judy) mad, but Just loves her so much there is never any punishment! I am now so careful with household items. I found a foam ear plug rolling around in a drawer the other day, and I immediately threw it in the trash. If that got dropped on the floor I just know one of our cats would try to eat it. Same with my sewing supplies. I keep everything in a plastic box with a tight lid, because the thread and ribbons are just TOO tempting. It is like having a two year old child all the time (though I have never had human kids, thank goodness!). Hope everything is great with you and your kitties! xoxo Caroline

@@KittenSchool Thanks for the reply. The same policies are in place around here. We have to be constancy on the watch for anything cats might eat that could harm them. Our worst behaved kitty,Thomas, likes jumping on my shoulder and biting my ear. He loves the plastic strips that come off sealed food packages.He'll chase one around, flip it up in the air, and generally go nuts until he's so worn out he needs a kitty nap! He's shown no interest in eating them, but we closely monitor his activity. I think he could have a contest with Sing-Sing to see who's the most mischievous and "butt-insky." It's never ending! No kids here. With 5 cats, who needs them? Best to you and kitties and thanks again for all you do.

Oh! Caroline, I got a new Kitten. I live on a Tropical Island and I have some rare neighbors in the apartment across the way who are Federal Islanders who are Pet Lovers (dogs and cats as PETS are part of a Civilization they're relatively new to) but I had gotten their dog a Flea Collar and dropped by to tell them that they had a beautiful Blond Red Tabby Tom that was as svelte as a Siamese (gorgeous thing!) and then the Lady of the House showed me a Calico Female she had... a short tempered Hissy Girl! but a beautiful Calico Pattern. Well, the other day their little Boy came to the door with this Torty Calico Kitten (about 8 weeks) saying "My Father said to give you this". Before opening the screen door I was thinking of a way to diplomatically say no but her appearance intrigued me. As a Tortie she was mostly Black, but with Feet dipped or splashed with White, a White throat, but her Snout is White and the starting from the tip of her nose up the bridge and all the way to the top of her Forehead is a Orange FLAME, an almost perfectly symmetrical Flame that comes to a Point and could be contained by a Triangle, but the straight lines on the sides being transformed into Flickers. And her Black Tail terminates in a Red Tip. Steaks of Red through out her coat, well, SHE LOOKED LIKE SHE CAUGHT FIRE IN HELL... the Cutest little Demon! I swear I didn't even THINK but that my Mind just said the name GLORIA to me, as though I was being introduced to my next cat. And, no, it wasn't the Father, it was the Mother. She is a Serious Lady that never smiles, bu the next time I saw her outside, I ran and got Gloria and held her up and gave her a kiss, and the Mother smiled like a school girl. Oh, and no fleas, and the kitten was healthy and active, and obviously well socialized, and even had a hint of a Shampoo smell. That Lady know her cats. But I was worried, my 3 Boys (Roary Bear the Red, Little Siamese Tommy, and Franky the French Chartreuse) were all hissy fitting, but after 3 days, well, I think Franky is my new Foxxy Buddy, who recently died at 17, who in the old days would be the first cat to welcome any new cat, and once he broke ranks and accepted the New, well, the rest would follow his lead. Well, Franky seemed charmed from the first, a cat all other cats can't help but to like. And he was the first to come around to Gloria. Yeah, just this morning, I saw Franky sneak up behind her and then swat her on the butt to make her scoot away in surprise, and neither one of them vocalized a hiss, and that means PLAY. And Little Gloria even ran up to Roary Bear and bopped him on his nose, and he was so surprised he almost forgot to hiss. Little Siamese Tommy is curious and follows her around, but backs up when she approaches. But he'll come around... at first he was hiding from her. Oh! Is this a Trick. I think it helps that when a cat is still hissing at a new kitten, to pick up the Kitten and present her BUTT FIRST to the Hissy Cat. They stop hissing and they lean forward to take a sniff. My Thinking is that they hiss because they are UNFAMILIAR with the Kitten, but how can they be 'unfamiliar' if they know THE ESSENSE OF THEIR TRUE SMELL or whatever it is they're sniffing for (maybe checking Food Source).

Hi Leo! I would love to live on a tropical island, though here in Florida we have lots of sunshine and palm trees, so it is a little similar. The tortie kitten sounds beautiful! She sounds like one of my previous fosters, Paprika, who was glossy black with sprinkles of orange all over her, so she looks like someone put paprika powder on her. And that's so funny about your three boy cats. It sounds like they are enjoying having a little sister! Creature, one of My neutered male cats, still like sniff the butts of my girl cats (sigh, boys will be boys), so it must have a strong effect on their sense of recognition. Glad things are going good with you and your cats, and thanks for the amazing comment! xoxo Caroline

@@KittenSchool Hi Caroline, I got really lucky the evening before Valentine's day with just clicking off photos of Franky and Gloria on the Brushing Station Shelf, that is, I got this PERFECT shot of Franky kissing Gloria on the Cheek. So that became my Channel's Valentine's Day Card, labeled "Franky Steals a Kiss from Gloria"... it's really cute: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iP-jc8sYp70r.htmls just 10 seconds of the still photo. Then I was starting Video Shoots for one of my Blog Reading Videos when Gloria jumped up to be a Lap Cat, and so I decided to introduce her. The video is called "Introducing Gloria Kitten From Hell" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mdlb2GJRCYI.html oh, Gloria got sick and discuss how we got her well.

Tell me about vet bills! Our cat Baxter racked up $3000 this past summer due to a urinary tract infection. He was unable to empty his bladder. It would have killed him if we didn't get him the medical care he needed. He's one expensive stray cat! I wonder if some people would have had him euthanized?
@KittenSchool
@KittenSchool 2 года назад
You bring up a heartbreaking point. Vet care is very expensive and many people cannot afford it. In these situations yes I believe the only option is to euthanize. How terrible to be in that situation, I can’t imagine it. I’m lucky I have credit cards for these emergencies and believe me I e maxed them out before on emergency vet care.

@@KittenSchool Imagine a cat that wandered into your yard, more or less moved in with you, then a few years later developed a very expensive medical issue. We still wouldn't give up on him. Fortunately we could afford the bill. When one of our other cats died from FIP no amount of money would save him. The diagnosis was fatal and that was it. It was the worst cat experience of my life. I still haven't forgotten it 5 years later. My wife reminded me over he past weekend it was 5 years this month since we lost him. We still have the orange tabby we got for him so he could have a "little brother."

We can't have a Christmas tree anymore because the cats would have a field day with it not only breaking the ornaments but eating the branches.
