Many folks comment on the saw dust. So, the challenge is access. The bottom panels are secured first under the frame, the tanks then go on top and then the subfloor. This creates a very slim pocket between the tank and panels beneath that allows any sawdust to accumulate during construction. It's likely not even visible during the assembly process since there is no way to see it. Perhaps after watching this video, manufacturers can look at ways of improving the ability to access and clean that area out. Remember the techs said this is what it's like in ALL RVs regardless of brand, and it's not hard to understand why if you think about the logistics during assembly.
@gordonsteel55
@gordonsteel55 3 года назад
Truth! These Rvs are made by human hands and things are gonna get missed. And as these move up and down the road its gonna shake more of the dust loose. I hope Coachman and others see this and create a step in the process and vacuum them out. I gotta say you've been blessed to have 3 really good techs come to your rescue, that's hard to find these days!

I understand how and when the saw dust gets there. But then a siphon valve in the Black tank flush system fails. Some are located under a bathroom sink. Mine just happened to be in the wall behind the shower and the pantry. Of course it soaks the floor , but also runs down between the walls right down on top of the black tank, off the black tank and into all that wonderful underbelly insulation and sawdust. I wish these manufacturers would get rid of the cheap, plastic, failure prone devices and put an honest to goodness household grade brass unit in their instead. Owner forums are chock-full of stories documenting these crapped RV units. Wanna bet folks don't know where their's is? Let alone what it even is or does?

The sawdust is a zero issue, and over time driving it will find an exit and blow out. We have at least 30,000 miles on our 2019 open range, and I STILL find sawdust in corners inside the rig. Your house has all that sawdust too, but it doesn't go through an earthquake regularly, so it just stays where it was.

One of my whisper quiet air conditioners was leaking water into the coach. The cause was saw dust from the ducting had made its way to the drain holes below the evaporator coil. You should probably inspect the inside of your 3 air conditioners after the first season of use on your new rig.

We full-time in a 14-year-old Cardinal 5th wheel that was 10 years old when we bought it. About 6 months in, the black tank pull handle disconnected from the gate valve. It had been difficult to operate, and finally let go after unthreading from the valve ( I had no idea it was threaded on. This thing has corrugated steel panels that are laid in from one end to the other, each one overlapping the previous panel. I had no idea how to proceed. Called a mobile repair service, and he gave me a choice. Remove all of the corrugated steel panels from the front to the middle of the rig, or he could use a drill and snips to cut an access "hatch", and would just fold it back over when done. We're in a mild freeze climate, at least it was until Feb 2021, so it wouldn't be a big deal to leave it unsealed. Since this is an hourly job, I voted for the access hatch. He re-attached the push/pull rod, lubricated everything, and showed me where and how to fix it if it came loose again. A couple of years later, the valve started getting stiff to operate, again. I was able to peel back the hatch, and there was plenty of room to grease everything up again. Now, my question. Why wouldn't the manufacturers install a hatch(es) at the factory, or at least mark the location of the valve(s) to avoid guess-work down the line? It would be so simple.

Knowing this is a custom built trailer for someone who is a pillar in the RV community with hundreds of thousands of viewers, with above knowledge in the RV business, you know they put a microscope into manufacturing this unit. That said, the wiring, and saw dust, and missed PDI. This is unacceptable, and negligent, and just lazy. For those out there who didn't have a microscope under their RV's construction can expect a lot worse.

I feel that he is always justifying the manufacturer problems. These issues are major to someone that does not have deep pockets. I think 3 videos showed the nests of wires, those wires were just laying in there with an obscene amount of sawdust.

I worked for Step2 for 3 years. I was an operator on roto-mold machines. This is what rotational molding pieces would end up with when the steel wool pops out of the air tube on a mold. Essentially, the plastic melts and then seeps out of the air tube. Sometimes, that will break off and fall inside an enclosed product. Sometimes it sticks out and we could cut it off, but usually it would get stuck in the tube inside the mold. Surprised that it got missed on such a large item though. It's pretty much just a manufacturing error. Not sure if these are roto-molded or if they are blow-molded, but this can happen with both if I remember correctly. Sorry that this ended up in your tank. I can see why it would be an issue in a tank that isn't designed to handle any kind of solid waste. This also often means that a lot of the plastic used to make your grey tank may have spewed out of the mold. This can lead to thinner walls of the plastic. Just keep an eye on it. Underweight products aren't as strong as their at-weight counterparts.

In my former career I made water for a variety of uses on a nuclear powered submarine one of which was drinking water. The purity of the water was better than most public water systems or bottled water. The inside of the pipes and the tank still managed to grow bacteria such that the inside of the tank was slimy such that it would gross a fair amount of people out. Never did the water cause sickness. The same people saying get rid of the zero g hoses because they saw a video with one cut open and it was black should definitely not look inside their pex water lines in their homes.

Sawdust is a usual thing. Also finding interesting debris in your tanks no surprise. All the disc pieces from where the factory cuts every hole for pipes into the tanks are rattling around inside the tanks just waiting for the chance to jam up a drain valve. They usually make no effort at all to keep the junk from falling down into the tanks.

So John there allows your compartment door to swing out and smack the coach next to yours. ALWAYS replace seals when removing and reassembling a valve or line fitting, seals are cheap, labor is expensive. ALWAYS lube valves before reassembling or replacing valves. A RYOBI 18V leaf blower works great and is fast. NEVER lean anything against the body of an RV, it will damage the finish of it.

We’ve had our 5th wheel for ten years now and I’m amazed had how much manufacturing debris are in the walls and compartments. When they used a hole saw they just left the round piece of plywood the hole saw removed lying inside the wall. I found about four of them. I also found a screwdriver, tie wraps, bits of wire, wire nuts and of course saw dust. I aviation manufacturing they practice “clean as you go”. The RV manufacturers could at least clean at the end of the day. Another peeve of mine is our 5er had hundreds of sheet metal screws in it and they’re all one size, about 1” long. So I have screw threads sticking out all over the place. 1/4” length sheet metal screws would work in most cases and look better and weight less.

Way back in the day when I worked at a car dealership I used to do the pre delivery checks etc. if we encountered anything that wasn’t absolutely noticeable, or testing a 4x4 transfer case and finding out you couldn’t shift in or out, you sent it onto the lot let the customer bring it back under warranty. Dealers get money for warranty work they do get reimbursement for fixing the vehicle beforehand after receiving a vehicle.

I purchased a 2021 Thor Motorcoach and found so much sawdust in all the places “no one would ever go”. For me though I like to know how things work behind the curtain because I do a majority of my own repairs. So removing some access panels it was similar scene you had but inside the coach. Worse part was metal shavings. Those hurt when they stick in your foot. They just keep appearing even after shop vac. and mopping. So I cleaned out all those places I could get to. I also found a rats nest of wiring. Don’t know why more zip ties are not used to keep things tidier for future troubleshooting. I found that the main power wire to the ac was passed through the metal box hole with no Romex clamp. Just rubbing on the very rough cut and burred hole. Over time with all the jostling a RV does that was shorting out one day. Gosh let me stop. There were bunches of “little” things that I feel a good inspection would have caught. I spent 2 weeks off and on just addressing them. Still a few more but had to take a break and go camping. 😂

Having watched so many videos about RV’s in general it seems the same manufacturers of specific RV items (plumbing fixtures, appliances, tanks, ect) make most products used in virtually every make, model, brand, of RV. This is actually keeping campers from being made better, the quality is suffering overall because these select companies have basically the entire market. They don’t seem to care what problems they’re overlooking. In combination with there being no oversight by anyone really to regulate quality it really has me thinking I may never buy any other new RV. We’ve bought 3 but every single time there’s always problems with how something was made, or not inspected. The price for these are way to high for issues to surface without any reason created by use or age of the RV. Personally fed up!

Gate valves don’t do well with differential pressure much less debris stuck in them. They are known for cutting their seal when functioned under differential pressure. Granted, probably more pressure than this tank is seeing. A better maintenance situation would be to have an access panel around the valves that are under the trailer.

Excellent video, we DEFINITELY gotta crack down on these RV manufacturers. Sloppy craftsmanship! There must be a way to make them so they don't come with all the debris hidden throughout the walls, underbelly etc. All tanks should be made 100% clear. Too many engineers are too busy trying to live on mars, outerspace fantasy nonsense and making ultra modern military weapons yet they can't make clear RV tanks. It would be so helpful if all tanks and vessels came with at least a nice wide clear band on a side so we easily can view exactly how much fluid is inside. Even better if it was a graduated clear line. Thanks
@mathdj01

I bought a new 79 Winnebago in March of 80 that was wrecked while being driven from El Paso to San Antonio, dealer wholesale! My Dad had a big shop so we were able to repair the damage, it was just below the windshield on passenger side wall, ten feet maybe. Winnebago's being one of the few coach's that were all metal framing then. After we got the wall repaired I had to reassemble the interior, took about six months, getting parts and working part time evenings and weekends. As soon as it was "dried in" we wanted to take it out, of course! While flushing the water system and tanks, just draining the water on the lawn, it had never been used or PDI'ed, still had the anti-freeze in it! As I was flushing the black tank an almost dissolved paper bag with a half opened zip lock bag washed out, almost full of funny small brown leaves with a strange odor! ...Hmmmmmmmm! The case of the wreck of ol'79 solved...LMAO! As always a great post!

sold my home in 2019 and thought about a new motorhome but talking to people and all the problems with a new on i got a 1998 gulf stream, had to put on new roof new tires and a few small things that where out over time, plus save 100,s of 1000,s of dollars, the original owners had all recites and this first 12 months worth is about 3 inches thick with things that broke under warranty and about 5 inches thick with things that broke after warranty2 things that dont work and im not gonna fix is the front roof air and dash air do not work, when the back roof air goes in gonna take both off and replace with roof vents cause i put in a 5000 btu window air and use my inverter to cool it when boon docking at about 1 gallon of gas in 12 hours of run time and yes it cools just as good the roof air does

I had an issue with my black tank not draining completely, then one day when I was cleaning it I saw something large that looked a piece of plastic. The dealership pulled the tank and found the round piece of plastic where they cut the tank for the toilet. Great quality control, once that was out things worked much better!

Really do NOT like that you can't drop the panels out of the way for Maintenance OR Cleaning. Having to lay on the panels half way dropped is totally ridiculous. Coachman taking a LOT of hits on this repair (which wasn't even their fault but exposed several Manufacturing Issues)

You know you just got rid of free insulation that’s also what helps keep the bottom side of your RV insulated and he just threw it all away 😁

It can do that with any hose. I have a 100 ft flexilla that got all nasty and every time you use it gunk spews out.

Wouldn’t that all be covered under the warranty?

What I’ve always said, if it’s hidden from the customer, no problem. That’s why you have huge holes for a 1/2” plastic pipe. Wire laying all over the place, out of site.

For sure. The "out of sight, out of mind" translated well to, "If it's out of sight, they don't mind". Living proof right there.

As they say, " Don't be a squealer, ship it to the dealer". That mentality has nearly destroyed the American car OEMs and handed market share over to Japan, Asia and Western Europe. : (

I had a similar problem first trip out in a brand new Gulf Stream trailer which was a plug when they installed the toilet and plugged the black tank I’m sure it was a awe full mess for the dealership as it was under warranty they changed the tank.we took that trailer back 3 months later because it had so many problems must have been built on a Monday or a Friday glad things weren’t so serious with yours 👍

Clearly many RV manufacturers need to up their quality standards. I'm not blaming them for this tank, but the underside of this is a hot mess. And the wiring from the other video about the porch light, oh my god. Let's call it what it is.

From the comments this is not a unusual issue. Maybe the tank manufacturers need to pay a bit more attention to their process and remove the sprue before the tank is shipped.

Really nice tank heating pads btw... I've not seen any that big, I have 4, each rated for a 50gal tank (2 50gal fresh, 1 50gal grey, 1 50 gal black). Wonder what the amperage draw on yours are.
