In this Garden Tour, Garden Home Host P. Allen Smith takes you around the Main Cottage at Moss Mountain Farm to highlight some of the foundation plantings. Allen also shares some great container ideas, including some exotic plant varieties he calls his 'pets."
Topics Include:
Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle'
Hemerocallis 'Happy Returns' (Daylily)
Gaura lindheimeri (Wandflower)
Ilex cornuta 'Needlepoint' (Holly)
Euonymus fortunei (Wintercreeper)
Viburnum macrocephalum (Chinese Snowball)
Lilium 'Black Beauty' (Oriental Lily)
Buxus 'Green Velvet' (Boxwood)
Punica granatum (Dwarf Pomegranate)
Sabel mino 'Palmetto'
Euonymus 'Coloratus' (Variegated Wintercreeper)
"The objective of a foundation garden is to accent the main entrance, complement the architectural style of the house, and draw attention away from irregularities, while keeping the plantings in the background. In a sense, foundation plants act as the backbone of the landscape design."
~ P. Allen Smith

You always have the perfect solution to a problem! 👊👊. I LOVE what you did with the viburnum/snowball bush. They just are so messy looking after blooming and cleaning up the lower trunks makes it look SO much better! I am gonna do that this weekend. And Allen...the Annabelles and the Vitex!! 🤓🤓 If I could only have two plants...it would be those two. The beautiful lavender colors and the cream and chartreuse have always made me swoon. BUT not limiting myself to two...I have filled my patio containers with a couple varieties of Russian Sage, catmint and lavender, which I rotate out into the big gardens as their blooms fade, and what fun THAT has been this summer! The bees 🐝 !! Thank you for the knowledge and the passion you share with us!

I have been watching the UK series Great British Gardens with Carol Klein and bemoaning how little Americans understand about gardening. Rule 1: foundation plantings set the frame and backdrop for specimen plants, thereby magnifying their impact and beauty. HEDGES, people! Then I watched this video and was reminded that Allen is one of the few who gets it!! This is beautiful art.

Annabelle hydrangeas send out runners/roots so that if you have any open ground you will soon have another shrub. I dug out five this summer. I only planted two. They also have roots that grab the soil like claws. I've never had a harder job removing a shrub.

Loving your channel . You share so much valuable information. I have a QUESTION about roses that were in the garden when we bought our home 3 years ago. They are sending out shoots from below the graft. I've been cutting them back but they keep coming. The graft is way above the soil. Would you direct me to where this problem is discussed? Thank you in advance. Gratefully. 🙏🕊

There are pretty much wild Yarrow plants up in Big Bear, CA. When we scratch some of the petals of the white Yarrow flower, it smells like Bactine ( the older brand of topical Antiseptic) is the Yarrow used in this antiseptic spray...if you may know the answer that is, thank you.

Allen, What is the “rule”? Is it better to underpin the foundation planting colors and spread towards the curbing or property entry. Or start at the entryway toward the home. Which is most appealing? I have to work with plants that are successful in hot weather but tolerate frost. All lantana is tiring.Thank you.

Old English Garden Tour : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CrcdGn9elOM.html | One Garden Center, Recycles wooden flats from colorscaping, covers w/ fine chicken wire/ sphagnum moss and plants out one side with annuals-houseplants, hooks up to drip irrigation. Colorscaping would affix to the wooden flats and grow and spill out over the flat, trailing between 24”-36”. Remind me of today world of Living Wall Garden landscapes. Yesteryears, planted out flats would sell between $100-$250 per flat. My favorites: Nemesia, staghorn ferns, trailing dichondra, impatiens, tuber begonias, dwarf coleus, caladiums. Finished flats were perfect for small entryways, courtyard and patios. | Many fine home gardens are on the May Garden Tour: HeardsGardenTour.com
