Americans tell of USA infantry massacre and rape of allied civilian women and children in South Vietnam. US Army photos and film. NOTE NOT in hostile territory, NOT an enemy village in South Vietnam, no-one properly punished. (you get more for DUI or pot than Calley got, he was out in under four months, no one else punished at all.)
Most important was that SOME Americans knew better and tried to stop it AT THE TIME.
The black guy from Detroit, the helicopter crew , Pvt Berhart and others, goes to show who has morals and who doesn't. The dude from Detriot couldn't understand how how they didn't know morals form somewhere, and the helicopter pilot and others who likened them to Nazi's and didn't go to Vietnam to be the Nazi's
You sullied your allies with this, New Zealand and Australia are still dirty from this, it doesn't wash off. Our heroes have this stain on them even if THEY did no wrong.
Yet still in Iraq CNN shows the USA continuing with NAZI tactics, using civilians (children even) under duress to check booby traps and to knock on doors of suspected ambushes, against Geneva. Using civilian contractors with No accountability. WHEN ARE THE USA GOING TO LEARN.? Stop being the Nazi's, or at least censor your press and TV stop youtube etc. Hide what you do , the Nazi's at least knew that one, be decent enough to have shame.
Same with the BAIT for SNIPER programme, if bullets were left near a school in your town would someone other than a terrorist pick them up, would it be okay for a Army sniper to kill them as a terrorist then.? I can think of LOTS of reasons someone other than a terrorist would remove pyrotechnics, left lying around by the US army as bait.
Some people just are not thinking it's the old oxymoron "military intellegence".

I don’t care what any of these people say,it is totally unbelievable that even during this completely immoral war,that these soldiers would not know the difference between a person who could conceivably be an enemy combatant and a civilian trying to scratch out a living in the middle of a civil war,and if supporting an ideology that is against the beliefs that we hold dear to us, then we are all guilty,I support a political party,other people support a different party,both of whom want change in my country, is that not just the same as supporting either side in this case. This massacre was a war crime,full stop,no excuses.

An unspeakable atrocity, yet these men should be commended for their honesty, and they should be supported as they were supporting their country. Thoughts and prayers go out to the innocents and the aggressors, it is apparent no survivors were unscathed. *peace*

People ALWAYS are, well the survivors are. Don't get confused here though fiona1933 the Cu Chi Tunnels were the enemy North Vietnam, My Lai was the ally The Republic of South Vietnam, Calley and his murderers were killing people in the land of the people they were defending. Like Sherman going into Georgia and killing the civilians there during the civil war because the North just got whipped at Cold Harbor.

You know, i don't condone what happened in that village. Infact, i'm very much against killing innocent believe it or not, but i think that those who still thought they did the right thing, those that don't show any remorse at all, only those should be punished the hardest. I mean, look at that 1 black dude... He's severly traumatized. It's eating him up. That's why he is what he is now. I mean, look at him. He didn't want to kill innocent. He is'nt raised to kill as he said it himself. Again, i don't condone what happened back then over there and neither do i approve it, but keep in mind that soldiers were ordered to do things they'd normally would'nt do and if they did'nt, they would face severe concequences. They were ordered to kill them by there superiors. Don't blame the soldiers themself.

whats worse now is that money and war are virtually inseperable these days, atop of mercenary groups that outnumber our armed forces during our campaigns. These groups get paid more then out soldiers and often times act worse then our men ever would. WE should expect more attrocities to occur in the future, only now there is SERIOUS money to be made. This will get worse before it ever gets better, or until our EMPIRE crumbles. I hope for positive outcome for when that occurs.

Who do you blame? The commanders who believed the VC were there, or do you blame the soldiers who were specifically told to kill them all, women and children included. Sure some acts such as the rapes stood out, but It's hard to blame people when the real problem is the fact that this is a inevitable part of war, where soldiers ultimately have unrestricted power to kill for a cause.

Once the NCO's are committing atrocities then discipline regarding prisoners and civilians is up the shitter. If the NCO's are doing something it's only natural the grunts will copy to the best of their ability, be it clearing a creek bed or killing women,children and babies unfortunate that it is and as sick as it is that's the way this massacre happened. So who's to blame? The NCO's and senior officers who set the example IMO.

You don't see that the thousands of My Lai's (in smaller scale) created more enemy than killing children and old women disabled. In that each time US troops did a rape torture or village burning, it turned SOMEONE against the Government of the Republic of South Vietnam and the USA. Even the new field manual is going to devote more time to "Hearts and Minds" to being able to win wars in other words, we did warn you guys at the time, but only now do you listen. Go Figure.?

don't worry. the u.s. did not sully the allied soldiers with this massacre, or for their conduct during the war. most people are smart enough to know who did it. aussie soldiers were in high regard during the vietnam war, even by the vc. this was because the aussies were well trained and had respect for whomever they dealt with. you could say they were more professional.

He made a terrible choice, I agree, and his acts were horrific, I agree, nobody who was harmed by him lived. He was a soldier, and he was trained not to disobey orders. Calley was pretty much the devil in disguise, who enjoyed the killing, and served 3 years of a life sentence. He apologised last year, yet I doubt he regrets it. This guy took his own life, yet he was under command of calley, no doubt a powerful figure. Those who did not shoot had incredible willpower.

Yes just a reminder to the US military, that I can and has lost wars. Even when it uses the draft in the USA and all it's technology. It wasn't just the jungle it was a well motivated enemy with supplies using superior tactics. It could happen anywhere any time again. USA ties it's own hands as far as resources are concerned. Iran for example can tie up the USA like Iraq defending the Oil production

@redbrest82 You can say what you want but let me ask you a question. The law says it's wrong to steel and posses a firearm with out the proper permissions but has that ever kept the bad guy from using a gun or steeling from some one? We can be all friendly and shoot rubber bullets at the bad guy but is he going to change from led to rubber? NO! If there was a complete sense about war than it just would not happen. But there will always be a determined bad guy and that usually leaves only one so

@chepickle
@chepickle 16 лет назад
Not for all of them, some were threatened with courts martial and still didn't take part. The guy from Detroit is the one that stands out in my mind, he couldn't articulate very well, but he could stand up to the college boys dig his heals in and see what they were doing for what it was. Funny how an uneducated blank guy could keep his humanity in times of conflict and war when moral white boys couldn't.

@yellowcougar18 You say this guy 'man a mistake as a young man'? NO. He MADE A CHOICE and committed acts as a young man. The fact that he could not live with his conscience after violating it could be be regarded as a mitigating factor and an aspect of personal redemption. However, he obviously condiered his crimes to be beyond forgiveness and he passed his own judgement upon himself. Justice was done.

If one bomb drops on Iran, my guess will be Opec will reduce production, Oil will go up to $150 a barrel or $200 a barrel and USA will repair the damage and let Iran drop a bomb on the USA, after petrol goes over $5 a gallon and the President is lynched. Bet even Venezuela joins in and cuts production at the same time and The Russian Fed has unexplained production problems. Maybe Opec wont join in, but don't increase production as the Saudis can't (much worse for the USA)
@trcysttt

Firstly, do you mean the supposed 12 of 911? Secondly, it's rather obvious that the mournful, impressionable, programmed men who committed the said atrocities are (if alive) still living the nightmare they stepped into on that dreadful day. Even those who didn't partake in the carnage have had their consciousness brutalized. As has been mentioned elsewhere, these men aren't evil, per se, unless all men are evil -- as such abject bestiality is not uncommon to war. True Peace is the only answer!

The invasion of Viet Nam was a heinous criminal act by the United States. My Lai was one of many massacres that took place. A very disturbing act of pure evil. The U.S govt had portrayed Communism exactly the same way Charlie Company conducted operations in the Quang Mai province. The truth has now emerged at an era of time where it has little impact on the concept of invasions that were yet to come. No lesson has been learned from the heinous murder that happened in My Lai and throughout the entire country. Military and govt coverups to protect the foulest acts upon human beings perpetuates more of the same another day. War itself is an act of evil aggression. We call them "wars'" but they're really invasions by a bully boy nation trying to push around a smaller nation, but end up getting their asses kicked. Yankee Go Home still applies today.

Good I wanted to be clear. The tunnel complexes were a very brave and scary thing both. US lost not from demarcation lines but from failure to protect people and to respect people. Like the protected hamlets of the British Malaysian experience. Getting better Justice from the Communists meant the hearts and minds were lost My Lai was that worse Justice in action. USA deliberately loosing Wars and photographing it, who ordered them to loose that war and why.?

F that! We were war pigs. And we made sure we were the meanest MFers on the field. If it took throwing an old VC down a well, down he goes. We were fighting all Vietnamese. They had no civilians near fighting, they were all VC, even the kids. War man! Feed them so they can fight us better? I don't think so. My Squad and Company stayed in the bush and offed many VC. We were too good for them. We learned how to ambush them setting up their ambushes. Killers, everyone of us. I will soon find out what God thinks about it all, and I am worried.

You're threatening my life ONLINE. I'll use deadly force against any one who threatens my right to self preservation in REAL LIFE. Your homicidal comments are ironic in the context of this video. It would be absurd to suggest that farms emptied of their military age men would be in a good position to defend themselves in any case. These women, children, and elderly folk were deprived of their lives, i.e. the most basic right of self preservation. You would feel at home in the KKK or the SS.
