Americans tell of USA infantry massacre and rape of allied civilian women and children in South Vietnam. US Army photos and film. NOTE NOT in hostile territory, NOT an enemy village in South Vietnam, no-one properly punished. (you get more for DUI or pot than Calley got, he was out in under four months, no one else punished at all.)
Most important was that SOME Americans knew better and tried to stop it AT THE TIME.
The black guy from Detroit, the helicopter crew , Pvt Berhart and others, goes to show who has morals and who doesn't. The dude from Detriot couldn't understand how how they didn't know morals form somewhere, and the helicopter pilot and others who likened them to Nazi's and didn't go to Vietnam to be the Nazi's
You sullied your allies with this, New Zealand and Australia are still dirty from this, it doesn't wash off. Our heroes have this stain on them even if THEY did no wrong.
Yet still in Iraq CNN shows the USA continuing with NAZI tactics, using civilians (children even) under duress to check booby traps and to knock on doors of suspected ambushes, against Geneva. Using civilian contractors with No accountability. WHEN ARE THE USA GOING TO LEARN.? Stop being the Nazi's, or at least censor your press and TV stop youtube etc. Hide what you do , the Nazi's at least knew that one, be decent enough to have shame.
Same with the BAIT for SNIPER programme, if bullets were left near a school in your town would someone other than a terrorist pick them up, would it be okay for a Army sniper to kill them as a terrorist then.? I can think of LOTS of reasons someone other than a terrorist would remove pyrotechnics, left lying around by the US army as bait.
Some people just are not thinking it's the old oxymoron "military intellegence".

I was very affected watching the MY LAI films and reading your very true and powerful comments. I believe you should distribute this on a disc. Those victims cry out from their graves to let the world know what was done to them. Governments have gone to great lengths for over 40 years to keep these films from being viewed but such hauntingly painful images and words must be known. With highest respect, David in NYC

Personally, I cannot even listen to the dialog in this video. The topic is so harsh that I do not wish to hear it. I can only view the photos, barely, and read the accounts. I think Americans today should take notice that up to 500 Vietnamese civilians were murdered including babies and their mothers. For all that, only one man was held accountable... for a lousy 3 years of "house arrest"... The other killers were sent back into American society .... with their army ribbons and medals. Thats how the US Government operates... then and now. For those of you who delude yourselves into thinking My Lai was a "part of war," I can only say that killing literal 1 year old or 2 year old babies by shooting them is NOT "part of war."

I agree with you. These people won't have the same thoughts if their loved ones are killed by soliders. But of course, when it happens to others " oh well, that's war, deal with it".

I don't think respect is a word to start using after such atrocities.
@chepickle
@chepickle 16 лет назад
It's the atrocity that sums up all the atrocities, sort of like how people say Auschwitz (the work camp) when they mean Birkenau (the death facility, English speakers anyway) . It's what has stuck in the popular imagination. It also sort of allows the USA to believe that Pinkville/ May Lai was the only atrocity, that Agent Orange Napalm the B52's and other May Lai's didn't happen.

@1:23, the subtitles read "my heart is cut into pieces". what she actually said was "i hate the u.s. enemy to the core of my being". that was the context of the statement. if the u.s. doesn't learn from these experiences, there will be many more people in the world who feel as this old lady does.

This is what war does - it kills people and once that's done you can't get them back. The poor woman who lost her mother and her children...her loved ones, just gone, never to be reunited with her. I hope anyone who watches footages like this realise that war is never justified. There'll always be victims, regardless of which side they're from.
@FondleMyNuts

of course there is no need for restraint against the enemy. but when civilians are murdered in cold blood, that's just pure evil. what kind of man kills defenceless grannies, women, children and babies ffs?! especially after the villagers brought them drinking water the last time they visited the village. despicable! when you do not understand the country and culture, it's best not to be part of the internal conflict. unless you learn and try to understand them.

There are orders which you can/should carry out and there are orders which you know if carried out would bring shame to the Crown or infamy to your unit. That's why we have military court, to provide legal justification to anyone refusing an unjust order as well as to prosecute genuine disobedience. If your superior asked you to kill children, would you do that? How are you going to face your family and kids if you do that? It's really up to you! It takes d clarity of mind and enormous courage.

I dont see the pint to this..... why should war exist when it brings so much pain? does it makes people happy? to get power by killing? when they sleep in luxurious houses builded in taken territory, doesn't it bothers them? don't they think "ah, i'll sleep where my men killed "x" number of people" too sad, such a sad world...we are so pityful
@backstreetnomad4986

that's why soldiers have to undergo trainings, that's also where military intelligence comes in. War fighting has never meant to be easy, it takes all the muscle strength and brain power to do battles, and even that, victory is not guaranteed, but if we have incidents like My Lai, then we can forget about ever winning a war in modern history.

this is a very classical American nightmare, more than 30 years after they lost so many lives and caused so much hell in Vietnam, they still think they can fight guerrilla warfare with conventional means. OF COURSE, YOU CAN NOT SEE THE GUERRILLAS, if you can see them, then that would be the day, they roll into in their cupboard IFVs and human-powered planes. The answer: you fight guerrillas like a guerrilla, and if civilians start to die bcause of your wrong strategy and tactic, your enemy wins.
@tommydangerx
@tommydangerx 15 лет назад
It is the right, responsibility and duty of every American soldier to disobey and report to higher authority any order he or she KNOWS to be unlawful. No matter what the circumstances. If a soldier is ordered to shoot unarmed prisoners, non-combatants, children, this would be UNLAWFUL. A soldier will be held directly responsible if he/she carries out unlawful orders. Reference: Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) Department of Defense Regulations DOD Directive 5100.77 DOD LAW OF WAR PROGRAM.

That murderer claims to have killed between 20 and 25 percent of all the victims. That's interesting. It shows that a subset of the company was responsible for the vast majority of the murders.
@Hokit
@Hokit 12 лет назад
What's interesting is the idea that the soldiers weren't themselves when they did the killings. It seems unbelievable because in most societies there are rarely good enough reasons for excusing violence, let alone murder. But this could be a sign of what the consequences are from the training soldiers get. When complex minds are reduced to seeing others as just "targets", then it's not a far stretch to see how they become machines devoid of ethics and morality.

have you ever been in combat? Ever been in these psychological situations? Soldiers are trained day and night before they go out. Trained so that they will keep going and not sit there and freeze. In 95% of the cases this keeps them alive, in this case it was a moral disaster...but the man himself is not a psycho. The man had PTSD to an extreme and eventually killed himself.

Germans and Japanese were fighting the wars in a way that was concerned about the murders were brutalizing the troops, that is why the Germans at least set up the Murder Camps, to spare the ordinary troops.

Im very disappointed as a American. We always preach about rights and wrong. Like what the Nazi's did, but in the end we did the exact same thing. Events like this happened in the past. We always say that we learned from their mistakes but in the end we do it. Just looking at those pic I feel very sad. All those innocent people didn't even get a chance to live. All the children never get to live a full life.Think about who they could be today. I feel sad that they took all that away from them.

This is downright disgraceful. All throughout my high school years, not once did I hear of this tragedy before. Yet, we are taught of the lies of patriotism and what it means to have freedom literally at the cost of our lives. How could I call myself American after discovering inexplicable acts these "Americans" has done to innocent lives. I hate America, but I don't hate the people in it. We are lied to everyday, and we are sitting here blindly choosing what our corrupt government is doing. America is going to pay for what its done. America can burn for all I care, burn the lies! Burn the government! I'll sure be laughing all the way to its grave.
@RR-gc9xu
@RR-gc9xu 5 лет назад
What makes you think corruption, government and overall lies are only embedded in America? Man and woman are not perfect , therefore, a country created by man and woman will not be perfect. America has given you more than you know and when I hear young indoctrinated kids speak this way, it just make me shake my head in disgust. True, like all countries, present and past, America has its fair share of horrific moments and events. But on the same token, America has contributed aid, food, wealth and protection to other countries in need and over a vast time span at that. These are countries either for America or not, but America still continues to do far more than any other country in the modern world to this day. That 's the problem with the younger GEN, only one sided and completed sheltered. No idea what it's like to be in difficult situations; to be forced to do something you never thought you would be capable of doing. You hear a story of My Lai and, to include additional American atrocities, come up with reasons of how you can justify your programmed hate for America. That makes you a degenerate. Just be aware. Because this younger generation is of this hate your white skin and America ideology, I guarantee this great nation will fall under their watch. But I'm sure you're pleased by that remark. There is a big world out there, full of evil and corruption. People in general are born with the ability to hate, kill, steal and lie, no matter if they believe that or not. Doesn't change the FACT, those traits are apart of our human nature and DNA, and there is nothing anyone can do or say to change that.

The USA was a part in a chain of events that lead to those re-education camps. Deposing the elected leader of the Republic took away legitimacy for intervention. It's hardly my job to explain the inexplicable, I can't understand how the USA troops behaved like animals when WE get trained to behave like humans and taught Geneva here in the RNZAF, why is the US army so useless at training.?

I think the Hague should get involved with that and Gitmo and Abu Ghraib and USA going to Iraq in the first place, and investigate 911 and Cheney's Haliburton making deals with an interim government etc etc etc. But the USA can just veto any move as a permanent member of the security council.

You are not the ones is a combat zone, wondering whether you're going to live to see tomorrow day after day until they turn into months on end. There's really no way to justify the manner of killings, along with the killings themselves, but just know that sitting there pretending to know better than the men who were there. Maybe when you've seen YOUR brothers legs be blown off or booby trapped to death and not want to murder whoever you think was involved in it, you can cast the first stone.
