America should never have been in Vietnam. Men go insane in war and can do horrific things to other people. It wasn't just Mai la there were other incidents. It's the same in Afghanistan when the Russians were there. Russian soldiers allegedly slaughtered innocent civilians.
In this part 5/7 GI's Harry Stanley and Michael Bernhardt of Charlie Company are the first soldiers I have respect for because, though they knew they could be brought up on charges in court martial or been shot or fragged by their own fellow soldiers, they did the right think and refused an illegal order.
"Down this road on a summer day in 1944, the soldiers came. Nobody lives here now. They stayed only a few hours. When they had gone, the community, which had lived for a thousand years, was dead. This is Oradour-sur-Glane, in France. The day the soldiers came, the people were gathered together. The men were taken to garages and barns, the women and children were led down this road, and they were driven into this church. Here, they heard the firing as their men were shot. Then they were killed too. A few weeks later, many of those who had done the killing were themselves dead, in battle. They never rebuilt Oradour. Its ruins are a memorial. Its martyrdom stands for thousands upon thousands of other martyrdoms in Poland, in Russia, in Burma, China, in a World at War..." Times never change. People do NOT learn from history. Today, many people are seeking to rewrite history or to eradicate the parts they do not like. This is not learning, this is burying one's head in the sand.
20 years before this Americans were prosecuting Nazis at Nuremberg for doing exactly this kind of thing. Justice is very one-sided where Americans are concerned. We'll chase Polanski or Assange for years but let's not be concerned about the wife of a US military-type who kills an English boy with her hit-and-run tactics; she is offered states-side immunity because she is a 'merkin.
Vernardo committed suicide a few years after these interviews. He couldn't stand the guilt of killing innocent men women and children...20 of them...especially when he killed the mother holding her 4 month old baby.

RIP Colin Burgess the drummer who has passed away at the young age of 77. Had the pleasure of seeing them only once in Sydney in the mid 80's when they reformed and put on a fantastic rock n roll show, which had lots of other musos in the audience to see a band of legends and they didn't disappoint at all.
