Hugh Thompson Jr was a remarkable man with a rare quality - moral courage and colossal compassion for his fellow human beings. He was beautiful inside out. RIP Mr Thompson, the unforgettable hero of My Lai.

Thompson and his crew were and are heroic men. They saved the lives of hundreds more. This was a horrific war crime, one of the worst.

The helicopter crew did the right thing that day. But, to highjack this top comment, I think the fact that every comment here goes on about how heroic they were really betrays people's inability to really confront My Lai. It's this really what you take away from this clip? The good deeds of one man? I think people are grabbing this moral straw because they need to hear the "hero story" in order to avoid thinking about the horrible reality of My Lai and ultimately America's guilt.

Christine H him and his crew saved many more just from stopping the men, he saved many more miles away just by stopping these American soldiers. That crew knew something wasn’t right, the ditch reminds people of Germany. Scary but it is true that the crew saved many more by stopping those men. All it takes is for someone to step up and intervene that craziness will not continue.

Yes he is. And his crew acted as true red blooded. Medina and Calley and there mob of psycho crazed assassin's should have known there was no VC in that village because there wasn't. Thompson and his crew stopped a lot more murders from those monsters.

True heroism requires moral fortitude. It’s not enough to simply follow orders. One has to be able to discern right from wrong for oneself, and make decisions on that basis for oneself, even when that means contradicting authority or putting oneself at risk. Failure to do so makes you less than a man. People like Thompson are rare. They shouldn’t be.

+many phone hong van thong, you are simply disgusting. you said it yourself "through history" the past is the past we can either learn from it or continue this rampage which occurred more than a century ago. Captain Ernest Medina who should've been held equally responsible for the events of My Lai like Calley was Mexican and only faced charges against his name, not a life sentence or house arrest. it is not only "whites"and neither is it only "mexicans" many people failed to be held accountable for their actions that day. Hugh Thompson has all the right to be considered an Honorable hero. him and his crew. Not once did he kill an unarmed civilian and even turned against his own platoon. He landed his helicopter between c company and the civilians running to safety and threatened to open fire on anyone who attacked the unarmed civilians. He helped many escape not even thinking twice about the trouble he will get himself into in opposing his own platoon. he is the reason the Massacre stopped, immediately reporting back to higher head quarters about the massacre taking place and had them demand a cease fire saving more civilians. Without Hugh Thompson more lives would've been lost that dreadful day . He is a Hero who deserves recognition although he refuses to see himself as a heroic figure because to him...it was simply human nature. Your lack of knowledge and judgments disturbs me. You are simply complaining about hero's of the event and yet I haven't heard of your name doing something in recognition of those lives lost that day like Hugh.T. Maybe focus on honoring the lives lost that day instead of discriminating an entire race based upon the actions of their earlier generations. Rest in Peace to the victims and hero's of the My Lai Massacre. Never forgotten x

The men who committed those crimes were monsters, but the tragedy is that they were turned into monsters by the military and by their government. What they did can be explained, perhaps even forgiven by some, but never excused.
@desserteyes6978

No you are also taught morals in the military and about war crimes. You also have the right to challenge orders if they are a crime, they teach all that in the military. No excuse to rape and kill innocent people. What if it happened to their family? We all have family. No excuse for these monsters. I would rather die that commit these acts.

For the idiots referring to the Americans as "white people" I want to take a second to point out that not every white person has done this or anything like it and if that's what you think you really need to be educated on the subject because for a start there were many black officers who did both good and bad as well as white, you can't make a sweeping judgement. There people, with the exception of Major Hugh Thompson and his helpers, were definitely wrong but that doesn't mean all white people are. This massacre wasn't about white and black, it was a terrible mistake with horrific consequences and those who look part should be punished.

War is war you can not judge skin colors or religions becasue every nation once in a while has been involved in some sort of war or attrocity. Secondly if you where never in a war you can not judge, blame or hate or even take a side only unless you have lost yourself things and people of importance. The sad truth is that Humans are animals and we too have instincts that are only opened in certain situations, this is why we are the most unpredicitble thing out there.
@alsdyall
@alsdyall 10 лет назад
White people have been at war with non-white people incessantly for the past 500 years; ever since they found their way out of Europe- not to mention the crusades. It's not every white person, bud it's not a few islolated bad apples either. Look at history this is undeniable. It's not just war, too it's a persistent pattern of cruelty, murder, extortion, dispossession and abuse. It's nice to make platitudes and utter nice philosophies such "as all people are the same, or we should all get along", but reality and history doesn't bear out these "acceptible views" no matter how many lies, cover-ups and whitewashes are done. Truth is truth.
@tonbonthemon
@tonbonthemon 10 лет назад
alsdyall It's true. At one level, everybody is different. But on the fundamental, we're all the same. Our minds are conditioned by causes, we all have 5 senses, and we all feel happiness and suffering when the conditions are right. But many people are bent on their own happiness so much that they don't even consider the effects their actions have on themselves and others. If we studied our minds to find out what makes us happy and not happy, we can understand also what makes others happy or not. That's the soil which compassion, kindness, joy, and equanimity grow in. But people will always find a reason to avoid thinking about others as a way to bring peace: "what will I lose?" "how will I get what I want?", "Is there any evidence to support that compassion brings peace?". It's terrible.
@alsdyall
@alsdyall 10 лет назад
tonbonthemon Yeah and a lot of it is cultural as well. Maybe the problem is a worldview that there is fundamentally 'the law of the jungle' that the winner or survivor is the one who can outwit, deceive and confiscate the goods of the next person or group. Some deeply believe this is the only way the world works and it manifests in their behavior - 'survival of the fittest'. But recent science has shown that is not the only way nature works. There is alot of cooperation, symbiosis, collective activity etc., that make the world function as it does. Lynn Margulis for example has shown this in her studies proving Darwin's view of nature was narrow if at all accurate in any real significance. Ancient so-called native cultures and many eastern religions as well as quantum physics show that all is one with many patterns and formations but the universe is all one single energy. Hopefully as time moves on more people will see it this way and curb the unnecessary division, fear, separateness and greed.
@tonbonthemon
@tonbonthemon 10 лет назад
Indeed... "survival of the fittest" is only an outward appearance of our behavior.

It's not a matter of black, white, etc. Some people are just coward, evil, like those US retards that laugh when they say they've killed innocent people. Other people are just coward, they won't do the wrong thing but they will watch it and do nothing (especially if their own interests are threatened if they do something). From your complacent commentary, Alex, it looks like you are in this group (or maybe in the first one?) And then we have people like Hugh Thompson, the real heroes, the game changers, who do whatever it takes to do the right thing, even if they have to completely go against authorities. If these people didn't exist, most of us would be slaves, and tiranny would reign in. If more of us were like that, well, we probably wouldn't even have wars, dictators, Hitlers, etc. in the first place because there wouldn't be a bunch of coward zombies following these tyrants' orders. May Hugh Thompson rest in peace, may all people like him be recognized and all the coward soldiers that have done bad things just out of sadism find their justice one day. Peace.

I'm a vet and I've read about the sympathetic helicopter pilot and his crew. WO Thomson was a real soldier. He wasn't some brainwashed hater of the innocent Vietnamese civilians. However, considering the bloody characteristics of the Vietnam war who am I to judge the attitudes of the frontline grunts ?? The VC were no saints. They also slaughtered their own if the case called for it. They were a bunch of brainwashed killers too. It was a dog eat dog war full of cheap politics, corruption, and fanatical nationalist communist "defenders " of their country. Westmoreland and Co. sucked , but Mcnamara and Co. were worse. I have no faith in Uncle Ho and his trained killers. Their job was to kill me, so I can t be liberal and say that the VC and Co. were OK people. Today, I read on line about pleasure trips to Vietnam including bar girlies from all countries. It's proof the the GOLDEN TRIANGLE drug dealers/ organized crime pimps of THE DEERHUNTER fame are all alive and well. The Viet mob is the only winner in a bloody senseless war.
