Americans tell of USA infantry massacre and rape of allied civilian women and children in South Vietnam. US Army photos and film. NOTE NOT in hostile territory, NOT an enemy village in South Vietnam, no-one properly punished. (you get more for DUI or pot than Calley got, he was out in under four months, no one else punished at all.)
Most important was that SOME Americans knew better and tried to stop it AT THE TIME.
The black guy from Detroit, the helicopter crew , Pvt Berhart and others, goes to show who has morals and who doesn't. The dude from Detriot couldn't understand how how they didn't know morals form somewhere, and the helicopter pilot and others who likened them to Nazi's and didn't go to Vietnam to be the Nazi's
You sullied your allies with this, New Zealand and Australia are still dirty from this, it doesn't wash off. Our heroes have this stain on them even if THEY did no wrong.
Yet still in Iraq CNN shows the USA continuing with NAZI tactics, using civilians (children even) under duress to check booby traps and to knock on doors of suspected ambushes, against Geneva. Using civilian contractors with No accountability. WHEN ARE THE USA GOING TO LEARN.? Stop being the Nazi's, or at least censor your press and TV stop youtube etc. Hide what you do , the Nazi's at least knew that one, be decent enough to have shame.
Same with the BAIT for SNIPER programme, if bullets were left near a school in your town would someone other than a terrorist pick them up, would it be okay for a Army sniper to kill them as a terrorist then.? I can think of LOTS of reasons someone other than a terrorist would remove pyrotechnics, left lying around by the US army as bait.
Some people just are not thinking it's the old oxymoron "military intellegence".

Calley spent almost all his time at house arrest. He was in his barracks room and could even have his girlfriend visit. Nixon finally gave him a full pardon I think

It's funny that one of the major reasons for US involvement in Vietnam was because of their precious prestige. Oh, the irony...

I think the point being made was an idea ideology can't be the enemy. I have a German mother in law, she was told and believes that the USA "saved" Germany from being over run by the USSR. With no regard for history, the preset post war borders at Tehran, USSR allowing access to Berlin, Germany attacking it's then ally and oil supplier USSR at Barbarossa etc. etc.

Some time after returning home from the war, Simpson's own son was accidentally shot by neighbours in his front yard. Simpson recalled the day later by stating He died in my arms. And when I looked at him, his face was like the same face of the child that I had killed. And I said: This is the punishment for killing the people that I killed.

No Scotland!!! and this is not whether England or anyone else has done wrong we're talking about the USA here.A country who prides itself on democracy,free speach and law and order yet has committed more attrocities than most during conflicts and who have no go areas of some of their biggest cities...England hasn't got that,nowhere in Europe has that.You have a dreadful record and the sooner you and alot of your countrymen get your head out the sand the better.

And your bankers, and your business man, and politicians including G Bush grand father Presscot Bush did also collaborate with the Nazies. German investmens in American were not touched in fact they did prospered during and after the war.

USA is a nation that takes pride in it's humanity. Germany under the NSDAP had a mentality that those being destroyed were "less than human" (untermenchen). The Japanese that they were the only humans. It's worthwhile to remind the USA that they were slave based and still behave like May Lai, and then pardon the one convicted killer Calley. It would be the same as if Iraq had convicted chemical Ali and friends and pardoned them just before the invasion (double jeopardy etc.)

No Officer can give a lawful order to do an unlawful act. If the President of the USA himself asked a Soldier to kill the Vice President in cold blood the soldier would have to arrest the President and start impeachment proceedings. That WOULD be OBEYING standing orders. Orders must be, from a legal superiour, about Military business, within national and international law. If you were to accept the non military, illegal suggestion to murder, you would be doing it as a suggestible civilian.

Maybe. Maybe not. I don't know. Maybe living through the guilt of what they did and living through the nightmares was their sentence. Look at Varnado Simpson in this documentary, he is a shell of a man who is haunted by what he did. He had to live through that for years for what he did.

They should have shackled him in a cage with a dozen varieties of venomous snakes and fed him intravenously so that the toxins would take at least a few weeks to kill him. That would be inhumane. It seems the bad guys always get to do the damage and we're left feeling helpless to exact a proper punishment. Bates won't get such a punishment. Too many soldiers are clannish and have sympathy for fellow murderers. War may be a tragedy, but it is certainly the most absurd. (Murder is not a sideshow!)
@Stormcommando
@Stormcommando 12 лет назад
Actually Historians from OTHER countries outside of the U.S. have documented the same things...there is an issue here. The V.C. did not have anythign even sem-advanced...whoever said they had planes, ships etc. is wrong. The NVA did have planes, ships, and tanks though. Truth told all these post making judgements who have never been under the duress of such conflicts don't understand..that still doesn't change the tragedy of this situation. Keep in mind propaganda works both ways.

Im black British of African descent so most of your analogies are actually irrelevant to me. On the angle of historic facts, the slavetrade was a European adventure however the USA was the main destination of slaves. Britain also policed its abolishment. The USA was the greatest benefactor of the transatlantic slavetrade. Pot calling kettle black comes to mind.

2,800 to 6000 people killed in hue tourtured and bound by the NVA and VC, this nothing compared to that,yes we as american should uphold a matter of decency but when vc and nva are training kids and woman to lure gis in then slaughter them , it makes you think twice, anyone whos never been to war will never know what it means to look at someone less then human . therefore you will say your disgusted and u hate the people who done what they have, walk there shoes at that time

Apart from Rangers last season we do fail miserably in Europe so it's no myth..I can see the point of view of the Americans cos every American i have met has been polite and very courteous and fiercly proud of their country..I do believe though that in the US army there are guys who still think they're cowboys and have this arrogant attitude towards the world that America ansd Americans are superior than the rest which as you should knoe coming from a small country can really stick in the throat

@beemerkid1 IM NOT SAYING IT WAS RIGHT all im saying is ve there in that time with everything going on hearing all the storys seeing all the bodys killing your enemy, youd look at it in a whole new way.. then tack on 50 years to get back to a human bieng again and youll have extreme remorse for what youve done, only after your mind gets somewhat right, my dads a vietnam vet he still has nightmares about it and hes 61 years old, but hell never speak about it ever only very little like training
@chepickle

How could "communism" be the enemy.? surely despotism and the distorted way the Soviet system was run was the problem not the theory of communism or socialism. That is to say, China and the USA both have more in common today with Nazi Germany, than my democratic nation. i.e Authoritarianism, death penalties, large military budgets, paranoia.

We have learned alot from the past which is why we have the rules of engagement we have now. In Iraq and Afghanistan it was very strict this kind of massacre could never happen in today's American military. I wont say the same thing regarding drone strikes. Yes they are accurate to a point but collateral damage still happens
