Everyone's palate is different. Four Roses yellow label is currently my favorite whisky of any type for the money. It's smooth, flavorful, and very friendly to drink. While I agree that it isn't much on the nose (Perhaps due to being a lower proof), I find it to be a well balanced classic bourbon. Not too sweet, not too bitter, good tastes of oak, caramel, vanilla, cinnamon, and orchard fruits.

I have to disagree about 4 roses. I think it's really good... I've been drinking whiskey for many years. Like mid priced bourbons, Basil Hayden, Makers Mark,... But 4 roses is a really good go-to bourbon. Especially on a budget. Very drinkable neat. Not boring at all. Oh.. and my yellow label came with a cork

I never had good whiskey. I had Glen Talloch but it was awful. Then i bought this, because i heard good things about Four Roses. I drank it over ice and in an Old Fashioned Cocktail and it blew me away. It wasn't strong but that was a good thing for a beginner. So everyone that has almost never had whiskey, this is the start. Absolutely fantastic.

seriously what's wrong with a screw top on a sub $20 whiskey? I dont get all the obsession or poo-pooing if a whiskey doesn't have a cork in it. does it taste better with a cork? does the cork add flavor? does the alcohol evaporate faster once opened with a screw top? does a cork in a $20 whiskey make it fancier? real cork is getting hard to source and a lot of today's wine bottles have the imitation corks. wish people would lessen the snob factor about corks.
@IvdW_
@IvdW_ 6 лет назад
I think that, to some people, it might be an aesthetic thing. Even then, most whisky bottles have some sort of composite cork to ensure that it doesn't fall apart after some while.
@TheWhiskeyDictionary
@TheWhiskeyDictionary 6 лет назад
+ianvdwoude Its completely an aesthetic thing.
@shenkel869
@shenkel869 6 лет назад
i never got a notification. I hear ya about aesthetics and all. makes sense. especially for bottles say $28 and over. but for a bottle under $20 I wonder if its worth the extra cost for the fake/composite corks. there has to be an addtl cost over a screw top. i realize this is not a huge deal. what's in the bottle is what really matters anyway. and I'm starting to think with the ongoing whiskey craze, some makers are re-doing their labels and adding corks just so they can charge more. I love Rittenhouse Rye 100 proof, and JTS Brown bourbon 100 proof. both have screw tops. Rittenhouse is around $26 now so it would be nice if it had a cork. JTS Brown is like $18 so im just fine with that price range to get a decent and cheap bourbon you can still sip on lol. there are plenty of whiskies in the $30 and up range now. I want some to stay in the $17-25 range that are still good quality. some liquor stores have so many choices now that a $25-30 bottle of rye or bourbon is on the bottom shelf... crazy. but for people who are younger and just getting into whiskey this is the best time ever with all the selection. when I turned 21 and was at a bar it was literally Jack and Beam, Johnnie Walker or Dewar's, and maybe Seagrams 7 or Crown. and u pretty much had to mix with coke or soda to enjoy it. now by neighborhood bar carries Pappy.
@MikeDindu
@MikeDindu 6 лет назад
Here's my thing. With a cork it does create a better air tight seal. A screw top might not be closed all the way due to user error, but with a cork that is far less likely even when you've had one too many. All that being said, it's only a nitpicking thing. A screw top bottle doesn't in any way ruin the quality of a drink...unless you're an idiot who barely closes the bottle.

I remember the days of rot-gut 4 roses whiskey. 1965. The only way to drink it was in hot chocolate. Sound disgusting? Try a few hot chocolate/4-Roses rot-gut paper cups and go bowling (remember this was 1965). So different today. Was afraid to try their good stuff, but glad I did (single barrel and small batch). Look forward to those reviews.

Yellow label basically doesn't exist anymore, it's been replaced by a more standard beige label with a cork, but it's the same whiskey inside from what I understand. I did not like Four Roses for the first half of my first bottle. About halfway in somehow my palette adjusted to it, and now it's one of my favourite whiskey's. I think I may even like it more than Buffalo Trace and some other high end ones. The fact they use non GMO corn doesn't hurt any, I appreciate a company with good health/business practices who care about their customers. The small batch is really good as well, basically the same as the yellow label but less watered down. Where it gets really good is the small batch select. It's not an exciting bourbon, I'll agree to that. But over time as you palette accepts it it's a VERY good whiskey. Maybe just a hair below the incredible Wild Turkey.

I'm new to bourbon so, it excited me to hear your review of these spirits. Taste is a subjective point to relate to so, I can understand where your taste buds are used to higher alcohol content and don't hold you responsible for my experience of my 1st dram. Four Roses Yellow Label tasted cheap & as far as the back bite, I thought it was substantial, compared to say Woodford Reserve. Newbies to bourbon take this into consideration. Thanks for taking the time to review these brands though and doing such a thorough job in your explanations too. Cheers!

As it is owned by Kirin it is very cheap in Japan and now available in Taiwan for quite cheap too. Has a metal screw cap and a brown label over here. It is my new go to bourbon ( as well as Evan Williams black) when I don't want to spend..I prefer Bulleit and Woodford but they are double the price. I find it light but fruity. Lots of fruit in there in my opinion with a touch of marizapan ( not sure if you guys have that in the US). Very easy to drink. I like it.

I never watch it when it was on t.v. But I heard it was so good so I bought the complete series and watched it all at once. I'm ready to watch it again. Hey one suggestion to you about your whiskey tasting you should never tell anyone not to waste their money on a brand, because that's your opinion of it I found that some you don't like I like and some you do like I don't, for everyone you don't like someone else likes it. For instance you rave about Woodford Reserve and I don't like that one so if you were to tell me to go out and buy it because it's your favorite I would be pissed off at you for telling me to buy, just give your opinion about it and let people make there own mind up. For instance you said don't waste you money on Four Roses Yellow label I bought it and like it.

I'm literally in the middle with Four Roses. I have no interest in the yellow label. I've seen too many reviews that make it clear to me its a gateway bourbon and I'm kinda past that. I have a bottle of the small batch and my son and I tried it together and both dug it. I'm looking forward to trying the single barrel, but probably not before I finish my tastings of under $30 bourbons. Thanks for the background as it was interesting.

Hate to revive an old thread so to speak. Its interesting that you describe it as watery while I just recently heard another reviewer describe it as "kind of burny" lol. It kind of shows how your own whiskey experience can determine how you view certain brands. In my case, I find the yellow label 4 roses to be in that tolerable range. I can be happy to have 1 glass of that from time to time. Then as we progress up, the small batch is my sweet spot. I honestly love the stuff. I make sure I always have bottle of it around. Then we get to single barrel. It starts out great then I get this bitter after that I feel like needs to be washed out... a glass full of ice usually will do the trick but I would rather have the small batch myself. I'l lsee if I can track down your review on the other 2.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I feel the same way as you do about all three (small batch, yellow label, and single barrel). I found this to be "ok" whiskey, better than some but not as good as others of the same ABV and price range.

My whiskey is Four Roses Small Batch. However, TW&M was out of the small batch, so, what the heck, I bought the 1.75L yellow label bottle. I think it is very presentable. Not as good as SB, but, $37 for 1.75L (.62 per oz) is hard to beat for it's taste. Small batch is $1.10 per oz, &, Single Barrel is $1.50 per oz at my Total Wine & More store. However, I haven't tried the Single Barrel, YET. It's next in line. Bottom line, IMO, it's hard to go wrong with Four Roses & the Small Batch is friggen awesome. I can't wait for them to get the Single Barrel in stock & hope it lives up to it's reputation. Oh, for anyone that likes mixing their whiskey, the yellow label IMO is great mixed with Canada Dry Ginger Ale. 3 oz whiskey & about 6 oz Ginger Ale. Anyone that prefers sweeter drinks can go with 8 oz GA. My GA is always cold, so, no ice needed.

I love the flavour of Four Roses Yellow Label, but the ABV needs to be SOOOOO much higher! I tend to try and pick it up when it's on sale, but when I drink this, I think "if only this were 50% instead of 40..." $40.00 plus tax here in British Columbia and unfortunately our government-run liquor store does not carry any other Four Roses products, so we're kind of at a disadvantage from a distribution perspective.

EW was my intro to bourbon, and I think Four Roses is better in the initial smell and mouth feel. It went down smoother than EW too, but EW mixed with soda better, I guess the "harshness" of EW holds up better with Coke.

Having tried all three during one evening I'd say the cheapest variant relies more on the aftertaste complimenting the initial warm glow, while the small batch has that four roses flavour kick in earlier with a bit more potency and the single barrel even earlier and more prominently still. It's like pumping in extra dollars (or euros in my case) to crank up the signal "gain" as you go up the price range. Same goes for Evan Williams (tried the black label and the single barrel that same evening. We were having a bourbon showdown as well while we were at it. Same evening btw wtf is Jack Daniels trying to go for? Gentle Jack confuses me more than anything.)

As always thank you for reviewing another bourbon, I haven’t seen you do a single malt whiskey in awhile now, are you temporarily backing off of it currently to do strictly bourbon? Does 4 Roses have the e in bourbon whiskey? Regardless, I love the channel and appreciate the reviews. I had Makers Mark this month and I forgot how powerful the alcohol is on the nosing and letting you know on the finish, I’m here 90 proof lol, the throat burns all the way to the bottom of the stomach. But, I always said that and many like it with the higher proof need an ice cube or 2, maybe a splash of water to open it up. I definitely recommend letting it breath prior to nosing or it’ll burn the hairs out of your nose and grow some on your chest, lol. Funny story really quick, I had my brother taste the Makers Mark, he doesn’t indulge the nosing or tasting process, he took it down like a shot, I poured a dram but enough to consider a double shot and he thought it was a liquor that you throw back instead of sip and boy did he regret it. I was laughing hysterically because he was whimpering it burns, lol. I think it grew hair in places you don’t normally grow hair, lol. Funny I wish I recorded it to upload to you.

The Whiskey Dic it’s actually a picture of me when I visited my parents, lol. It feels like I’m in the boondocks all the way up here compared to Connecticut. I heard that they’re coming out with Boondock Saints I don’t know if it’s going to have a number after it or something like some movies but classics don’t allow it lol. Comes out 2018. Anyway, I appreciate the comparison, I often believe it or not get Stifler from American Pie movies lol. Is there a bourbon or single malt you would suggest? Doesn’t have to be pricy like some people but nothing that’s $1000 or more I’d have to save up for that lol.

Reviewers constantly look down their noses and refer to people who like inexpensive whiskies as 'beginners'. People who like inexpensive whiskies are sensible. The one big thing missing from this review and shows a lack of knowledge is the fact that Four Roses is one of the very few NON GMO bourbons.

I bought a bottle of this and it's actually pretty good, I mean yeah it's smooth but it actually has alot of flavors and is a good bourbon for people who want to get into the nosing all the flavors and know what they are drinking. when I nosed it I got strawberry, pineapple, the oak and on the finish is when I picked up the kind of chocolate, vanilla and honey. I've tried alot of bourbons and it's not bad. I still prefer Buffalo Trace or wild turkey

+PC_GameWorld Buffalo Trace I could see. I think of Wild Turkey as being pretty different overall. I like your honesty and your appreciation for it.

The Whiskey Dic well I love the $30 Small batches. Elijah Craig, knobs creek, for roses, larceny, Forster’s Roy, Evan Williams bottled in bond. So yes please give me your recommendation of a top shelf bourbon. I enjoy your channel. Andrè from New York

Reviewers keep recommending the least flavorful stuff for beginners, whether it's scotch or it's bourbon.. Well, sah, I dis! agree! Give them something rich and full and fruity, I say! That'll learn them whiskey!
@TheWhiskeyDictionary

Yea. This is one bourbon i kind of regret suggesting for beginners.

Yup! Was one of the first videos I ever did. Search "Bulleit whiskey dictionary". Should find the bourbon, rye, and 10 year

Full disclosure... by the time I got to the rye, I had had too much to drink

The yellow label for sure is not something that I'd push too hard for. It's decent as an intro, but anyone but the newest to bourbon probably won't love it.

The Whiskey Dic I was referring to years ago. Not today. Even the Yellow is sooo much better than the old Four Roses.

Best American bourbon as opposed to Scottish bourbon
@TheWhiskeyDictionary
@TheWhiskeyDictionary 5 лет назад
Scotch is different than bourbon. If you're asking best American bourbon vs. best Scotch, that's a tough call to make.
@moeriou8431
@moeriou8431 5 лет назад
Isn't a qualification of bourbon that it's made in America? American Bourbon just seemed a little redundant to me lol
@TheWhiskeyDictionary
@TheWhiskeyDictionary 5 лет назад
Nobody calls it American Bourbon. They just say Bourbon. There is also American Whiskey which doesnt necessarily meet all of the requirements of bourbon
@moeriou8431

@@TheWhiskeyDictionary 3:21 Best American Bourbon, it was just a bad joke. Kinda like when a movie says "Paris, France" like yeah as opposed to Paris, Ohio
