I took full time care of my grandmother with alzheimer's, it's definitely a journey! Especially as they progress to the mid and late stages 😢. Keep your head up and do all you can to decrease your alzheimer's risk and reduse your stress as a full time care giver! Thanks for all the videos.
Thanks. I have 3 siblings that help out with the care as well and that definitely reduces the stress levels. It's a tough thing to witness happening as she progresses through the stages.
I can empathise, we are in the same boat with my 94yo mother in law. About 3 years ago I decided I was going to get to grips with bourbon. I found it mostly acceptable until I had Four Roses barrel strength; the first bourbon that I really enjoyed. Since then I’ve found quite a few bourbons that I like more but Four Roses will always have a special place for me.
I think I prefer the barrel strength over the single barrel, but we will see how it all plays out in my December First Friday Flight Fight. I'm doing a flight of Four Roses.
Execellent review! I would say Four Roses Single Barrel is not typical taste of bourbon. I usually recommend Maker's Mark to my friend as entry level of bourbon. Love Woodford Reserve most.
Four Roses Single Barrel was my first bourbon, suggested to me by my whisky loving nephew. Didn't appreciate it at first as the proof was higher then I was used to. Years and many bottles later, I wish that I still had some of it. Might have to pick up another bottle. Nice, honest review, Peter!
Thanks. When I see other recipes I'll still pick them up. Hopefully I find one I like. It's not a bad bourbon at all. It's just not my preferred profile.
This is a bottle I always keep in stock. It is great for mixing, stands up to ice and is good neat. The tiers do matter a little. The 5s & 6s are the ones to pick up.
Four roses has a great line up. My favorite and go to is their single barrel. The fruity rye flavor is outstanding. The light burnt oak and Apricot flavor is very smooth and easy.
How do you get an estimate for a single barrel? I just bought one, but I assumed the barrel as a whole is untouched unless they added to it? Through out the years maybe they blended more to it, but then wouldn't that be "blended single barrel"? Or a maybe a SB bottle? Still new to whiskey myself was curious is all!
I used to get regular hankerings for this while it was regularly available & affordable in the UK. Only occasionally find it now on offer. Still a big fan. Cheers Peter🥃
Nice review Peter! I’m a single malt guy who likes to dabble into bourbon, rum and mezcal. I haven’t tried much Four Roses. My go to bourbons have become Rare Breed, Henry McKenna 10 and Knob Creek 12. Where would you put this Four Roses in that line up?
I really enjoy your reviews. I have not had the single barrel, but do enjoy the small batch select. As one care giver to another, your channel has given me respite most nights. Keep up the really nice content.
Thanks. I have a Four Roses First Friday Flight Fight coming up in December. The small batch select will be part of the flight. Care givers unite! Cheers.
Great review! I’ve had similar experience with the Four Roses single barrel. I picked mine up at Costco for under $40, so tough to complain about the value. Cheers!
I’m a drinker of all and a big rye fan. Four Roses is a fantastic bourbon. It’s unfortunate you aren’t a rye fan but that’s why we have a palate and you seek what you like. Enjoy!!
Same here. I'm whiskey promiscuous so I'll drink all types. This one is just not my favorite profile. I'll still pick up other recipes I don't have. Maybe I'll find one I like.
Recently blinded Knob Creek 9 & 12 against my Single Barrel, it came in 3rd. Not that it's bad, but the rye mashbill does influence me (like you said, I'm also not the biggest rye fan). At the least, a great looking bottle for the shelf!
Nice review! I have small batch, small batch select, and the single barrel and I like them all okay. Not my go to bottle but on occasion they hit the spot. I’ve heard that the bottles with a 5 or 6 are higher up in the Rickhouse and have better flavor? Mine is a 4 but I don’t like it enough to buy another that I’ve seen with a 6 just to compare.
I go back and forth on Four Roses. When I drink it on its own, it's perfectly fine. But when I put it in blinds, it doesn't seem to fare well. I think I like the Small Batch Select the best from their core range.
I find the floor level is somewhat important for the FR Single barrel. I have discovered level 5 and 6 seem to be a much better pour versus level 3. That seems to be the general opinion among Four Roses enthusiests.
This is one bourbon I like on the rocks on a hot day and like drinking it neat.I have 2 Four Roses rocks glasses when bourbon is cold in glass roses on glass turn red got it on their website very cool. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🥃
4 roses is one of those hit or miss for me. I like it, but seems like I only the barrel select the yellow label and the SB are just ok.... I like the higher proof.... I don't get a mint note on this bottle. but I have only tried the I-4E, also was gifted the 8-3n, have not opened that up yet. did you say what yours was??? if so I missed it.
Much 💗to all moms..!!! 🥃 Can't wait to see which single barrel bourbons you plan on reviewing. Hopefully we'll see a few ryes thrown into the mix..?!?! Judging by the quality of your videos and photos on Instagram, it's obvious you understand photography & lighting. What kind of equipment do you use for your still shots?
Unfortunately, rye whiskey will not be making it into the flights. As you know I'm not the biggest rye fan and i think I only have 1 single barrel in my collection and it's a Knob Creek store pick from AJ's fine food ☹️ As for the photos on Instagram...I use my phone camera. It does a good job.
Kinda surprising that Four Roses SiB reminds you a grandfather’s bourbon. To me its new age and the opposite end of the spectrum from “classic” bourbon
Four roses single barrel, extremely good in an old fashioned.... I don't really taste the mint... I find it tastes better than the four roses select....
