+scipio africanus apart from that the crusade's destination was vague but while the crusaders sailed through the ionian sea they met an overthrown emperor of the byzantine empire who told them to help him regain his throne. The crusaders agreed and helped with regain the throne but the crusader lords also distributed the byzantine empire among them without anyone else knowing and then the siege began....
@IAssassinII
@IAssassinII 7 лет назад
It isn't that cut and dry. Both Greek and Latin sources attest to the fact that Alexios IV Angelos, son of the deposed Emperor Isaakios II Angelos, sought the crusaders' aid in restoring his father to the throne and deposing the usurper Alexios III Angelos. They fulfilled this vow and only moved to conquer the city when Alexios V Doukas Mourtzouphlos strangled Alexios IV and took the throne for himself, refusing to pay the crusaders what they were owed for coming to Constantinople to begin with. Alexios V fled, but was captured soon after the formation of the Latin Empire, where he was set atop and thrown off of the column of Theodosius. This isn't to say that the Venetians and crusaders didn't have their own motives for seizing the empire, but it certainly wasn't carried out to repay the crusaders' debt to the Venetians. In fact, that was already paid off when Zara was taken from the Hungarians. If you wish to know more, just read the firsthand accounts of Niketas Choniates and Geoffrey de Villehardouin.

+Παναγιώτης Βατικιώτης You are right for the most part, but the target was identified as Egypt in Geoffrey de Villehardouin's account.

You know the real quote of that soldier was: "Ave! Cometh all ye Men of God! Bring fire and steel upon the jewel of the Byzantines, and sail with me to sack Constantinople, the ageless city!" Upon being asked why, the soldier simply responded, "cuz defenders never win... duh"

The nearly 2000 years of the Roman Empire and the Roman Republic was non-Christian. Christianity first appeared as state religion from 380 AD, and then, only about 100 years later, the real Western Roman Empire fell. So Roman Empire was Roman Empire, and Byzantine Empire was Byzantine Empire.

It was called Byzantine Empire because the area where Constaninople was located was also named Byzantium and if you are still not convinced that particular area has had its name since 480 BC and even before, you can check references of that area from the writings of historians Thoukydidis & Xenophontas. Thoukydidis has made some references to that specific area as the "final" battle, during the Peloponnesean War (427 - 404) BC, between the Athenean & the Spartan fleet led by Lysandros took place in the narrow sea of Ellispontus nearby the now called Kallipolis That area was the closest one to Byzantium. On the other hand, Xenophontas , who was also a very experienced cavalry leader, has referenced that area because when the Spartan forces had fled to the north alongside the Persian forces they found themselves directly at the Black Sea or Ephxinos Pontos then Xenophontas had to go to the West as he and the rest of the allied Persian army led by Kyros and Spartan army led by Agisilaos were being persuaded by the other Persians led by Artaxerxis the Second plus the main cause of this persuade was the rivalry that started for the conquest of the Persian throne after the death of Kyros & Artaxerxis's father. He had to pass through the area of Byzantium to find "shelter" to the Thracian King of Odrisses (one of the Thracian tribes that lived nearby the river Evros located in Thrace ) . I hope that now you have been convinced .

Hey Apollo. I just wanted to correct you on your history at the beginning. Indeed the French wanted to sail for Jerusalem. They went to Venice in search of ships and supplies. The Doge of Venice Enrico Dandolo was set on controlling the Eastern Mediterranean before his Genoese rivals could get an opportunity. He negotiated with the French to attack Zara in Hungary. Only there did the Crusaders decide to push towards Constantinople. This is because they had already set the precedent (Catholics killing Catholics). I would recommend Villhardouin's account. For a byzantine perspective I would suggest Nicetas Choniates' account.

H fitzy an exile king of byzantine said the crusaders to attack constatinopole so he could take back the throne
@hfitzy1303
@hfitzy1303 7 лет назад
Yes you are right. However, Alexius Angelus was not a king, but the son and heir of Isaac II. He was imprisoned by his brother in 1195. Of course, there was the incentive of great wealth if the Venetians and the French crusaders succeeded in helping Alexius take back the throne. It tied well with Dandolo's own agenda. The decision however wasn't made until after they had sacked Zara since the French contingent were interested in Jerusalem, not Constantinople. The French besieged Constantinople and forced Alexius Angelus' brother to surrender but they didn't sack the city. Angelus became Emperor and they acquired land in Greece but Angelus failed to pay them the amount that he originally offered. This was the primary reason for the French and Venetian forces to beseige Constantinople a second time. This time in 1204 they sacked the city and plundered its churches. Again Villehardouin and Choniates endorse this narrative. Thank you for reminding me Mr Koukourdelis :)

Hey Pix. Actually the 4th crusade was coerced into attacking Constantinople as they had commissioned a fleet to be built from Venice but some of the crusaders had ships already so a portion left in those instead which left the bulk of the crusaders short on funds to pay for the fleet.The Venetian then took them to an island and left them there until they swore to attack Constantinople who was the Venetian biggest rivals for sea trade.

"Stern now was Éomer’s mood, and his mind clear again. He let blow the horns to rally all men to his banner that could come thither; for he thought to make a great shield-wall at the last, and stand, and fight there on foot till all fell, and do deeds of song on the fields of Pelennor, though no man should be left in the West to remember the last King of the Mark. So he rode to a green hillock and there set his banner, and the White Horse ran rippling in the wind." What the defenders should have done at the last.

The good thing about the Constantinople map is that it didn't change a great deal since the Atilla era (other than Galata tower and some Italian merchant districts probably). It's a shame that Medieval churches and mosques haven't been incorporated into the settlements yet. Can you imagine a proper siege of Jerusalem or Damascus on this? That would be awesome!

It been interesting to watch the siege and occupation of Constantinople by Mehmed II's Ottoman Turks against the Constantine I Byzantines and Venetian Mercenaries.

despotate of epirus took part at the siege( well, epirus troops, I don't think the despotate existed at that time), but it was on the Byzantine side because it was a part of the Byzantine Empire
