Interesting comparison thanks for the vid. To make the Aion come alive change the negative coil spring ($10 direct from Suntour) and add a few volume spacers. Instantly changes the feel of the fork. It's a really solid piece of kit. Oh, and I've never had a problem with mine losing air. Very reliable.

Allright! At first I was sad because of no tinker tuesdays anymore. BUT you convinced me. I see the potential in Fast vs Fun. Great first episode IMO. Keep going! Greatings from someone who won‘t unsubscribe …even in case of bmx content.

You could race xc pretty well on either. A lot of people race cheap fun bikes at xc mtb and its a couple hour time commitment for most local events as opposed to an expensive, all day slog for gravel events.

I love my FOX 36. I do the oil changes myself, and it has never given me any issues. Except I DID have a fit4 damper explode into a million pieces inside of it once.... But whatever.

Honestly I think that the redemption aspect of the video could prove to be a good addition to the series. I really enjoyed watching a segment of the video where you went back in and revamped the formula to see if it really was the original key equipment (fork) that caused for the losing run or if it was a combination of other factors as well. I feel that most people who compare do so apples to apples without looking into the fit and adaptions you can make to really make that new set up right

Rebuilding your fork just because it lost air... 🤔 I think someone is happy saying just "sure! bring it here, I need some money!" I have an Aion 35 as well. In 2 years it hasn't lost a PSI in air pressure. And I've taken apart my forks just to change the travel and check things. Nothing to do. Every time they're just as new. They weren't designed around an oil bath, so there's none of this normal "maintenance" others need. Everything is cartridge, everything is sealed. If you have an air leak it's just the Schrader valve internals or an O ring. I assumes you have played around with the three air tokens inside? When you take off the cap that's all there is. Suggest you save nome unnecessary expense and open the top of the left leg yourself?

I have a beater 26' hard tail that I use for when my full sus is in the shop or for a loaner bike. It has a Fox Float RL 32mm stanchions and the difference is huge. I am on mostly gravity trails and the front breaks are too much for the fork. If I am using my front to slow down on pavement I can watch the fork flex and tuck under the bike and then spring back. It makes a huge difference in the confidence you have taking longer rock rolls or keeping speed into corners. IMO 35/36mm stanchions is the sweet spot for anything under 160/170 travel. Great series btw, looking forward to more.

I definitely had flex issues with the Fox 34 on my trail bike. But I am a big guy. 265 lbs/120 kg. I swapped it out for a Fox 36 and noticed a huge difference.

Awesome video. I really appreciate your relatable builds and I’m really thankful for giving a lot of us normies some second hand data. My current bike has a Manitou Markhor with 30mm stanchions, but I’ve never noticed much “flex”, maybe because this is my first bike and I don’t really know what I’m feeling for. But I think I’ll definitely be looking for a fork with some beefier stanchions on my next bike.

Definitely a great first upgrade for a budget bike. They are a solid choice for their price point. I fell out of love with mine because I got used to fox dampers. It lasted me 4 years until I needed something a bit more stiff that I could also control the rebound of. I definitely found that 30mm stantions are pretty small.

Also going from a 9mm qr to a 15mm thrule axle makes the front of the bike wayyyyy more solid
@clarkmodesitt6778
@clarkmodesitt6778 Год назад
@@baileydelelys2890 So the reason that I actually got the Markhor was because it was the only unicorn fork that was available with a straight steerer and also thru axle, because this bike came with a thru axle front hub. So I've at least got that going for me lol.
@baileydelelys2890
@baileydelelys2890 Год назад
That is the exact way that I describe mine situation! thank you! I’m glad that someone else knows the struggle! My bikes a 2012 which was when 29ers were becoming mainstream but they decided to keep the older standard for head tube! It’s a stupid hybrid spec you need in order to maintain the geometry. Mine is 29” wheel, freaking stupid “straight steerer”, 100mm travel, originally 9mm which I swapped wheel set to 15mm thru axle. It’s a crazy standard. The forks on the used market that do fit that criteria are swooped up as soon as they hit the market. I got tired of waiting to find my unicorn in Fox so I “compromised”. I got a cane creek headset adapter so that I could run a tapered steerer. The fork I compromised with was a 2019 fox float 36 which is complete overkill. Reason I bought it was I got a good deal on it used and that I know that the damper is a good one that can be serviced still. I haven’t been able to throw it on just yet because I still have to buy a 100mm airshaft, wiper seals, and a booster space adapter. All together I think that I’ll be under $400 invested?

I feel like Marzocchi bombers should be mentioned here. Z1 are 36mm stanchion and z2 are 34 I think? Any way great value, light enough, way simple and preform great.

Longer and lower front will put your weight radically more forward and in order to compensate for this on gnar downhill you;'d need to run more slow compression and possibly more air pressure. That will, of course, kill small bump sensitivity and cause harsher ride.
@rider65
@rider65 Год назад
Only if you don't adopt your body position. Load position and load transfer are dependent upon body position as well as braking forces. Riding Annex e-bike on a downhill requires a change in body position and riding Style. Good Riders understand adaptation

I already had a fast bike, so I decided to run my Norton fun style. I tried to get the closeout ohlns coil fork but couldnt get the cash in time so I ended up getting a Helm mk2 instead and it is definitely the bike I am grabbing for. I decided to run it in the short 130 setting for now but am thinking I will try bumping up the travel some time. I need to get some brakes though, I am thinking of formula cura brakes but not sure if I need the 4 piston or not.

I really want to buy the Norton frame and build it up as a 27.5 beefy tire, party bike. I've got almost everything to put on it. Stuff just laying around, except wheels. It's been a pain to source the wheels I want and not spend a kagbillionhundred dollars on them. Ibis wheels seem to be the closest thing to reasonable I can find. Then it hit me that my extra (Rockshox Yari) fork is for a 29er. So I'm intrigued at the "long fork" video idea.

The longer & lower rise stem will also weight the front wheel more than the shorter & higher rise stem… due to load transfer & to body position obviously… (New DMR stem looks great also!) >>> 👍🏽😎
@rider65
@rider65 Год назад
It will absolutely not load the front wheel anymore. How is it going to load the front less or more depending on the bars or the stem? Did your body weight change during the ride? Are you talking about body position? Load transfer does not change no matter what bars and stem you have on your bike. Now if you're refering to body position yes of course that will affect load transfer. Physics can be confusing a good place to start in Physics for Dummies excellent book from Wiley publishing 👍

it's pointless to compare a trail fork with an xc fork. Why don't you just buy the fox 34 or 36 if you have the money? Besides that, the Aion should feel pretty darn good if you buy a nicely specd one, not sure whether it was an honest review or it was just the classic 'it's suntour so it must be shit' thing. 0/10 low effort video

i can sort of understand the desire to do so, part of his livelihood is making these videos and to have driven so far out there and up to the top of the trail, only to have to walk out with nothing would be really frustrating. tho I simply would have thrown in a tube tho… or a dynaplug. i definitely would have yelled a lot. but i wouldn’t ride a flat tire (without an insert?!)

🤔 Compression damping is how much a fork could compress through its potential travel. So when you say when you adjust the compression dial and you don't notice any difference either the compression circuit is inoperable or your sag is not properly set. The compression fully open wood have a softer feel and the fork stanchions will travel as much as you have set the preload to. With the compression fully closed before should feel stiffer and not 'travel' very much. Perhaps revisit your sag settings. 👍

Interesting as I have 2 MTB bikes, both 27.5, both Giants, A Talon 1 2019 & A Fathom 2 2019… long story short… this has been a topic for me for a while now. I’d like to also build up a 700c / 29r (2.2-2.25) for the fast lightweight bike and the other a more burlier 650b / 27.5 2.4-2.6 😎 🚵🏽‍♂️🚵🏽
