Matthew takes you through replacing the body side stripe on the 93 Mustang project with a fresh tape stripe of the correct color. This video discusses the pros and cons of removing the old stripe with a 3M stripe wheel versus peeling the tape stripe off, as well as techniques to install the new stripe and get the car looking good.

Many year ago (1991) I bought a used 89 Mustang LX 2.3l Hatch that had a black exterior, and it had Pink stripe tape. Initially I thought I would take it off, but later decided it really set it off the look of the car and kept it. Don't know if it was factory, or something the previous owner had put on. Unfortunately 2 years later, someone ran a light, hit me an totaled it. So I replaced it with a new 93 Mustang LX 5.0 Hatch which I still have today. Its Calypso Green and I always thought about adding striping, (Gold or Silver) but never did it.

LMR have a good selection of stock stripe colors in their catalog, and the tape is not big money. Just installing it is a pretty straightforward job. I know I agonized over replacing the stripe on this car because once you start, you have to see it through and it COULD be a long miserable job, and you COULD damage the paint if you are very unlucky, but it ended up not being all that bad, and the end result was certainly worth it.

@@tecmotiondyno Yes I think the red striping really makes that car pop. Much better than the black.

Plan on doing the same thing to my Project Girl Sir. Funny thing is, I used to hate that red stripe but have made a 180 and think it actually looks pretty sexy. Now got to figure out if I want to purchase the chrome ponies or turbins from LMR on my white '92 5.0 5-speed

White has never been my color and it is technically wrong to have the accent stripe on a 93 I guess, but I like the car a lot better with the red accent.

@mistersecret88 A couple of these wheels leave a little to be desired but I have a lead on a couple of nicer ones. In the grand scheme of things, they are a "pretty nice" set of original Pony rims, but not "Minty". :)

Thanks! I really thought the red stripe brightened the car up considerably, not to mention that the black stripe that was on there was too wide, flaking, and applied poorly in the first place.

Totally of topic on the video but your channel is the best on Foxbody content imo, and I was wondering what would you gap your plugs running for 5 pounds of boost and a pretty stock engine stock heads and bottom end ?
@tecmotiondyno
@tecmotiondyno 10 месяцев назад
I normally suggest .030” for a boosted application. You can get away with a little wider if you are low boost like that, but it won’t help much power wise. You can probably run a stock heat range plug with that combo, but I would usually go one step colder. Like a 6 series NGK.

that would work to peel it on one someone did it in the like past 8yrs but the 25+ year or more it dont come off like that ...its all dried out and it flakes off like dried out plastic .. i had to strip it off with paint striper /scrape it and repaint mine ... that looked way EZ!
@tecmotiondyno
@tecmotiondyno 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, I honestly thought there was no way it would peel cleanly, and I was also concerned that since the car is a repaint it might have peeled paint with the tape, which is why I went straight to the stripe wheel. Honestly, the stripe wheel was working fine except for the burnishing which was going to be covered by a new tape stripe anyway, but I decided to try a peel and it was actually easier on most parts of the car than it even looks like in this video. I think it just goes to show that you shouldn't count a tape peel out right from the start. It should be noted that this was clearly an aftermarket accent tape stripe, and although I can't attest to when it was actually installed, it had clearly been on there for a long time, The guy I bought the car from had owned it since around 2000, and I know that he had either done it or gotten someone to do it for him.

@tecmotiondyno
@tecmotiondyno 10 месяцев назад
@mustangjoe2066 I actually got this body tape from Western Motorsports in Calgary, but they deal in the Late Model Restoration catalog and that is where it originated. You can get any of the popular factory colors from them.

I actually peel back and use gasoline to get stripes off. Just neutralize paint right away. And II never ruined paint
@tecmotiondyno
@tecmotiondyno 10 месяцев назад
@mistersecret88 I was going to try a heat gun, but it turned out that these stripes peeled back fine without any helpers. On steel, I think I would use the stripe wheel over something like gas, but good to know you have had good results with it.
@CarsFoodWeed

If its the original stripe it tends to peel off easily. The replacement I had on there for LMR was extremely annoying to remove.
@tecmotiondyno
@tecmotiondyno 10 месяцев назад
I really thought this one would come off hard, so I was surprised that a peel worked. It goes to show that you can't discount the peel method.

I would bet that car never originally had a trim stripe on it… if I remember correctly they did away the strip in 90 or 91. My GT is a white 1990 it has never had a stripe on it… just all white and I think around that time they started painting the black molding on the LX 5.0 body color and came with the sport seats. If you couldn’t find any previous signs of a red stripe it probably didn’t have one… someone probably added it I would guess
@tecmotiondyno

@jasonquinn588 After your comment I dug out and reviewed my copy of the Canadian 1993 Mustang sales brochure, and I am going to have to agree with you. There is no mention of the accent stripe and all of the cars depicted show the bodyside moulding painted body color except when they had the Titantium lower accent in which case it was painted Titanium. Additionally, there is NO QUESTION that the stripe I removed is aftermarket - it absolutely is, it was a poor job of taping, and the car is also a repaint so assuming they also repainted the mouldings if there had been a factory stripe it would have been removed first. I don't actually know when Ford stopped using the accent stripe - certainly many earlier white hatches had a red accent, and 1993 models have a LOT of differences from prior model year Foxbodies. I'm not really an encyclopedia of factory options when it comes to these cars because frankly over my life I have pretty well exclusively dealt with modifieds, usually heavily modified, versions of these cars, so what was stock and what wasn't from an appearance standpoint all kind of blends into the background noise for me, but I was clearly mistaken about the accent on this car. Having said that, I like it with the red accent a whole lot better than the black one, or no accent on a pure white car. Incidentally, when I pulled out my 93 sales brochure I see that I had made a contemporary annotation in the margin for an LX 5.0 Package 072A car that says "$17003 rebate to dealer reef blue". That may have been the Canadian out the door price for an LX hatch that year! Looks like that would have had power windows, locks, and mirrors, sunroof, air conditioning, and sport seats based on the margin notes. Sales tax would have been extra, but if I had my guess, that likely included destination and delivery.
