Funny isn't it that most Drag cars are either Hemi's or Chev's. If you want a standard engine with no mods then I guess overstating by 10kw may be a concern for some, if you're going to do mods then the choice was obvious. I don't dislike any V8 and Barras were great for those who liked a 6 but critiquing due to overstatement says more about the buyer than the maker.

ZomgzPinezApplez the Gts also has a 9.9" diff and stronger driveshafts so more power is going to disappear. The Gts is still quicker in single every way. The dyno is a tuning tool that's it. Good for ford boys bragging at the pub but it still gets belted by the Gts.

I'm not trying to get into a pissing contest here, but what The Aussie Ford guys have done with this coyote engine is nothing short of spectacular. The engine in the Ford has been totally reengineering in Australia to cop a blower. It seems that Ford USA only went that direction after seeing what Ford Australia had done with it. Lets be honest, once again Holden has opened their GM parts catalogue and played pin the tail on the donkey. The fact is that Fords engine technology is up to spec with the best in the world. GM however continue to persist with the OHV engine, god knows why. The fact that a non-intercooled 5.0ltr can take it up to an intercooled 6.2ltr says it all. If we actually levelled the playing field with capacity and intercooling, all you have to do is look at the Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang. The DOHC 354 cubic inches (5.8ltr) 32 valve V8 supercharged engine is certified to produce (493 kW, 855 Nm) 662 bhp and 631 lb-ft of torque. Now before anyone starts talking about Corvettes and Camaros, Shelby also sell modified versions making as much as 1200hp that can apparently still pass emissions testing. When will GM join the 21st Century and start building DOHC V8s?

Any serious Ford or Holden owner will modify their car, and anyone that knows anything about engine modification will tell you that the Ford has way more to give than the chev. shaolin warrior Oh, this is comedy gold. Firstly lets get one thing out of the way, not sure if you noticed my name, but it includes the number 351, a classic pushrod engine. I own 3 different V8s all of them pushrod engines, two of them are modified. No one loves an OHV engine more than me. For the record I've also owned a various turbo and AWD cars, so I am not biased by any means. Anyway here goes, I reckon you contradicted yourself at least 3 times in that one, a new record for you. I will give you some credit though, you did state some relevant facts, but none of it actually supported your argument ROFL. You did prove you could count though, so good for you. OK here goes, as far as I know, not one other reputable manufacturer in the world still makes OHV engines. GM is the only one, and heres why, they nearly went bankrupt with the GFC before the US Govt bailed them out, they couldn't afford to spend 500mil to redesign and engineer and test a whole new engine, so they just keep wringing every last bit of performance out of the LS. Don't get me wrong, its a fantastic engine, but when all things are equal, capacity/ compression/ cam profiles, it just cant compete with a DOHC Ti-VCT engine. Why do you think they kept upping the capacity from 5.7 to 6.0 to 6.2 to 7.0. Simple, because increasing capacity was the only way to get more hp. I'm sure the engineers at Chev are hanging to build a DOHC engine and show what they can do, but they don't have the money. Ok now here's where you might wanna give yourself another 100 facepalms, cause someone needs to knock some sense into you. I figure its the only way you're gonna have any chance of understanding this next bit. And b4 you wanna have a sook, yes I pasted it in, cause I couldn't be fucked typing out an essay for your benefit, plus I'm sure these guys explain it clearer than I would. "Another critical element in the engine's performance can be found in those weird initials: Ti-VCT. That alphabet soup is shorthand for twin independent, variable cam timing. The 5.0L employs four cam phasers, one on each drive sprocket of its four camshafts. (These are actuated by camshaft torque and hydraulically controlled, as opposed to being purely hydraulic.) By manipulating the intake and exhaust cams, Ti-VCT allows maximum flexibility in varying the cam timing, permitting a wide effective lobe-separation angle at low load to minimize pumping losses and maximize efficiency or greater overlap for better breathing at higher rpm. For those of us who still have old-fashioned, single-cam, pushrod V-8s on the brain, it's like having two different camshafts you can change on the fly: an RV cam for low load and demand or a full-race cam for high-speed use. The ability to alter valve events according to speed and demand is one of the keys to contemporary engine performance. That's how leading-edge engines make big power over a broad rpm range with great fuel economy, while still meeting ever more stringent emissions requirements-all at the same time. The figures are impressive. On 91-octane fuel, the 5.0L is SAE-rated at 412 hp at 6,500 rpm and 390 lb-ft at 4,250 rpm. That's a tick less than the 6.2L LS3 V-8 in the Camaro, but remember: This engine does it with more than a liter less displacement than the Chevy-in terms of specific output, the 5.0L produces 83.2 hp per liter. By optimizing airflow and cam timing and chasing other various inefficiencies out of the engine, Ford has managed to wring more than a day's work from the 5.0L. The company claims volumetric efficiency of 110 percent at peak torque rpm and around 100 percent at peak power rpm-exceptional numbers for a normally aspirated, volume-production engine. Not that many years ago, only the most exotic racing engines were capable of volumetric efficiencies of greater than 100 percent naturally aspirated. SO my special friend, you have now been schooled, and you now know why GM still use pushrods in their V8, even though all their other engines are DOHC. And mark my words, in the next 5yrs when GM have their shit together they will build a DOHC V8 just like everyone else in the world. In that size and configuration with eight throttle bodies reving to 16-20000rpm its the beginnings of an F1 engine. Its called a race engine! Fark!!! We all have both sides of the fence to call home on these brands. And I guess we were lucky enough to own them and drive them unlike the future generations that will not understand what Bathurst and the two brands really mean. I would have liked to own a HSV to experience the Australian nostalgia but i have not looked back on purchasing a FPV F6. Owned Tickford 6's and Holden 5.0's and it was a great ride. Hopefully there is something to hang on to in the future that we can still call Australian.

The FPV to me looks much more sleek in appearance, like the look of the HSV as well. Both nice cars that would put a smile on anyways face behind the wheel, last thing you will be thinking about when putting your foot down is what the car looks like.

I am sorry but if you are going to 100k + for one of there two machines, at the fpv doesn't drop too much from it's out fly wheel kw figure. But hsv my god what the hell do they have running in the boot. A 100kw drop from it's advertsed 430. I also understand that all hsv figures off the factory floor don't include accessories fpv does.

Peak power only tells half the story. They should have compared the power/torque UNDER the curve. I could have 1000KW peak, but a laggy POS everywhere else. The car with less weight and a better power curve on the street will always win.

Sorry but if you're buying a GT-F for 100k for its performance and not collectability, then you're buying the car for the wrong reason. You can spend far less on an XR8 + modifications and smoke both these cars.

The point of these cars is collectibility. Building on an earlier Barra/LS equiped Falcon/commodore would easily match these 2 cars at a fraction of the price. Mind you that power range is plenty for the street anyway.

I was very surprised recently, I had a GTS R squirt it down hill in front of me and he had no chance of losing me. He tried tried however I stuck to him like shit to blanket in my 2010 GTS with some work.

If you want to run an accurate test the engines both need to be run in with a few K on them and similar amounts.The GTS had only just over 2000k on it but the GT had nearly 6000k.that makes a difference.I have just had my 100% stock Auto VF GTS on the walkinshaw dyno Brisbane and it made 361.5kw first pull and 361.6kw the 2nd with 18000k on the clock.Those figures add up to 430kw at the fly wheel no problem.

Even tho FPV has more power, HSV still beats it to quarter mile run. So it's one thing having more power, and another putting all that power down. The main reson is, HSV has 740 Nm torque vs FPV 570 Nm. So when it comes to off the line acceleratin HSV has the advantage.

I own a 950hp turbo fg falcon,very little mods to make hp.no other standard engine will do this reliably,thanks Australia for developing a bullet proof engine,the falco chassis and suspension are also superior to the holden commodore.i do however love the new commodore sexy interior,they have finally cracked this one.10 out of 10.

James Grove dude....I'm a FG driver too. and I'm not having a go (nor do I want to give dunnydores much praise) but: 1) 950hp i.e. 708rwkw? that would not be "very little mods to make hp" lol 2) I doubt its bulletproof if you haven't opened up the engine....I thought I read 500rwkw+ means built engine...unless you have deep pockets and like living on the edge :P

@@karjim100 Lol the ford chasis and suspension is awful. The holden decimates the ford around a track. Reviewers stated the Ford just isn't great around a track. The seating position is way too high, and it's can't go around a corner for shit.

The only track that matters is the 1/4 mile, and on that track the Ford shits on the homodore all day every day. Even the FGX XR6 Sprint turbo shits on any holden/HSV ever made.

That’s a surprise in the results. But what a huge difference in dynos. I would of expected the results to of been the same or close to the first run. Should of put both cars on a hub Dyno. Ford would of produced more power but not such a difference between dynos.

I reckon Herrods Dyno was past its "Use by" date as they now have upgraded to a Hub Dyno. November 2018 my BA Ute was ran up on their Hub Dyno, so they had changed it by then.

In the real world dyno of 80-120km/h times, the vehicles are almost the same with similar weights; the 100-200km/h times reveal a slight edge to the FPV, therefore that 15-19kW difference is reasonable. As for the advertised flywheel numbers of 430 vs 351, we all know that anything GM have had fanciful numbers for decades. HSVs, Walkinshaws, 1960s Chevies all been big notin' themselves and lying upwards for decades. Ford and Chrysler have alway done precisely the opposite to avoid the wrath of insurance companies and governments. Examples: FPV Miamis (as demonstrated here), GTHO at 300bhp (yeah, sure...try 375), the Chrysler 426 Hemi at 425 bhp that whipped every Chevy ever built despite horsepower ratings of up to 450, Chrysler 265 Hemi 2bbl at 203bhp that managed to match Holden 308 4bbls at 240bhp down the quarter and top speed. At least Holden was tellin' the truth with those pathetic red and grey motors (138ci put out 60 hp...just a few more than my chainsaw).

They say that you lose around 10 to 15 % of kw due to the drive train, yet the numbers do not match up at all, how many kms are on these cars, which is a massive factor band new, they are still not run in so to speak, i understand a lot of newer cars do not need to be run in, but most cars these days are not running at 250 KM per hour either ?

Till date no hub dyno which is the most accurate dynos out there, why not take them to Harrop and then see what figures are produced after all they are the company who made the superchargers for the FG 335 and the FG X models . :)

Why the hell didn't they put the camera on the HSV guy and ask why they are ripping people off with their under tunes 430kw should be around 370kw at the wheels depending on auto or manual air temp etc etc the LSA could easily achieve 430kw but HSV don't bother doing the right thing, they have been doing it since at least the VX clubsport (255kw) I had one that was stock and there is no way it's 255kw.

That is the factory difference in gear ratios, you use the gear closest to 1:1 ratio in the gearbox. Usually 4th gear. The HSV will have a shorter diff ratio getting a lower speed in that gear. The benefit of that is the HSV with shorter diff gear will be able to accelerate quicker with less power. As far as i know the FPV's ZF automatic has shorter 1st and 2nd gears so has a taller diff ratio to suit Vs the HSV Taller 1st and 2nd gear and shorter Diff ratio... its a balancing act. Dut the Dyno runs were accurate.

How about they compare the power curve across the whole rpm band instead of peak power that comes in by the time you have to shift. And also compare the numbers after a tune only to get a real idea of the potential of each engine on stock hardware.

My father had a vn interceptor ex highway patrol car nice car went into hsv it get its tuning apparently after he put a exhaust on it it had 225kw+ at the time was good for a interceptor other then that I wouldn’t want either of these I’d prefer Older before VE FG older stuff is better

@@BrosefDudley Has always been that way. CHEV figures are bare engine no accessories at all. Ford figures are with all engine accessories fitted. Ford also have a history of understating figures for various reasons including not being called out as liars about engine performance. You even see it in things people don't ever put the effort into checking. The dash calibration is one thing. Even the Holden dash lies about engine performance, My dads commodore tells him the car is using 8ish Litres per 100km of fuel, if you do the reset trip meter and measure from fill to fill its more like 9 to 9.5 lt/100km actual, My falcon does the opposite the dash will say 15lt/100km but if I measure from fill to fill it's closer to 13 to 14lt/100km. Holden are smart fuckers, they have the holden lovers figured out, they can overstate their numbers, make the car seem better than it actually is and use smart advertising and interior layout, features ect to bullshit people into buying their cars and believing they are the greatest things ever, while Ford doing things more Honestly get walked all over. I'd take the more honest ways of Ford over the Bullshit from Holden.

I know Paul from Roaring 40's i used to sell them Aircraft grade aluminium,which at the time they were using just commercial grade, which is a massive difference ie: aircraft grade say 2024 T4 or 6061 t6 ,which aircraft use on the wings of various boeing like the 747, 767, 737 etc and the commercial grade in the same thickness which less than 1mm think is simply crap, they had to use almost 2 to 2.5mm thick commercial grade compared to less than 1mm in the aircraft grade for various areas on building the GT40's, well done Paul, i hope to see the team at the next melbourne international motor show, the last time i seen the team was back in 2008/09. :) Which was during 1998 99 and the GT40's are approx 30KG lighter and 80% stronger in the areas which the aluminum is used and no rusting ever as well ?

I don't see the point of this test at all, dyno numbers are basically useless, they are a tool for tuning that is all. performance tests are 1/4 test, you can see 0 - 60 ft to see how well it gets off the mark and trap speed etc theres even a ford guy in this video the gts is a better and faster car

theres more than one thing that determines how much power is lost from the flywheel...the exhaust is one of them, its not on there on an engine dyno just extractors. and you could be right but if we are talking best power for your money you can get an old 308 vh commy for $3000 in good condition (light with a v8) and stroke it for $5000 to 383... add a cam for $200 ontop of that because its just the part its self and you would of needed to re tune for the 383. $8200 so far so lets get a 6/71 blower for it and install that for $3000 lol $11200 can make absolute un streetable power if you want it to. i just think the hsv is the better one and i think the reason they as you say under estimate the power output is because that transient overboost thing is barely ever active if they advertised 20% more power and it barely ever made those power figures they would get in trouble for it. car companies over estimate everything and ford probs over estimates its power without overboost.. a little too.

The hsv would’ve been an auto and the ford would’ve been a manual that’s probably why the ford won. Manuals don’t tend to lose as much power from the engine to the wheels compared to autos. I love both cars but you can’t compare an auto to a manual on a dyno because the auto loses a lot more power from the engine to the wheels.

I wouldn't get too wound up about the Rated output numbers. The 2 companies use 2 different methods of rating their engines. At the end of the day what you get to the wheels is actually what you get to use.

This is not a fair test, you basically have to go to a dealer and get one which has ZERO km and then do the test, i thi9nk FORD has always cheated when it comes to dynos and i know owners who have traded in the FG's and selling them for what is the same cash for a HSV GTS/R with zero kms?

The readings taken on the Chassis Dyno are from the rear wheels which is considerably less than the engines output measured from the flywheel of the engine. The FPV engine would of been making roughly just over 400 kW at the flywheel. Much more than the 351 kW at the Flywheel it's rated for. But to spend a couple days pulling the engines out of brand new cars to Dyno them on an engine Dyno makes no sense, so a Chassis Dyno is used.

Holden all the way on the track these cars are made for one thing to be driven like they were stolen and on a track day the holden would win hands down, why because of the size of the wheels full stop? Fords wheels are the same front and rear which thus no control around corners or at least slower around corners and thus slower lap times full stop, just like skaife proved with the redline against the fors sprint with russell losing it around corners because of no grip and cant put the power down ?
