Fracture Free - Successful Glaze Firing of my Sphere from a TWO Part Mold

My two part molds needed a few more tweaks, and in the mean time I was able to bisque fire some of my spheres. They looked ok, but would any cracks appear in the foot like last time I fired them? No! Indeed the sharp corner in the original mold was an issue and rounding it over solved the problem.

Woot! So pleased your tweaks resulted in a successful firing! Congratulations! I'm glad this is working for you, but for me, I'd want a sort of 'skirt' on both halves at the joining face, such that the alignment system would still work, just be further away from the 'equator' of the sphere, AND I'd put a wider base on the bottom so that it doesn't look like it could get bumped and roll away.

Thanks! I'd like to find an alignment solution but have yet to come across something that constrains both the horizontal directions without getting in the way of the height/mating face. As for the base, that's the great thin about shape cast - it would be easy to redesign but just changing the original curve. So far stability hasn't been an issue and I intentionally hid the foot under the bottom. However if I end up with bowling balls instead of pots I might reconsider!

I use a little trick for separating molds: The idea is to put something (a piece of clay, plastic, etc.) between the two parts near the edge and you can use that to separate the parts easily. Basically you create at least a finger sized hole.

You mean as the plaster is being formed or here between the two halves? For the first, yes that makes sense. I think making an intentional gap as I mention in the video would be good. But having a spot where ones fingers fit in makes sense as well!

question: 2 years ago, you published a video on using compressed air to help get a clean release from slip cast molds. I'm very curious why you don't do that with these sphere molds.

In general, I've found it is not needed. The pot will just come out. A few years ago I was using the wrong clay (it was throwing clay I turned into slip) and it was sticky. I do use air occasionally but it is usually when my molds havent fully dried. The challenge with air is it is pretty easy to deform the very soft pot.
