EPISODE 46.
After weeks of hectic preparation, we begin the big push to re-frame the stern of Tally Ho! For these 3 weeks, we have 10 people (including myself) working full-time on the boat;
Kirt (USA), Finn (UK), Arnaud (Belgium), Thom (UK), Pat (USA), Max (USA), Robert (UK), Glenda & Bill (USA).
After a few days spent training all the new members of the team, we get into full-swing frame production, and are able to achieve our goal of getting one pair of frames made and bedded per day! There is a great sense of camaraderie in the yard, and after making 7 frames we celebrate our progress by taking our little gaff-rigged dinghy out for a lazy Sunday sail.

If Kurt isn't an Industrial Engineer, he should be. His contributions to this massive effort can be fully appreciated by those who have had the opportunity to lead a group of people to work efficiently. Well done Kurt. This is my second time through the series, and I'm picking up a lot more this time.

Guys, realize we're watching history unfold before our eyes. The fact that such a well-organized project can be put together by only a group of volunteers who met through the internet is something which would not be possible 10 years ago. I'm really happy to be able to witness this and I look out to all the upcoming videos / progress. Thanks Leo and good luck!

@@josephv5346 of course people have been taking on projects for a very long time. I enjoy working with my hands too (building a boat as well) so thats why I like to watch Leo's videos. The difference, however, between Leo's project and projects in general is that here people work together on a very 'professional' scale, eventhough theyve never met eachother and there are no payments involved. That is something I havent witnessed before, to say the least.

Makes you wish we could all have a Kurt . Leo, you struck lucky there, mate. But then I think it a testament to your personality that you allow people in on this very personal project and let them play such a big part, rather than simply doing grunt work, as important as that is. Also want to give a thumbs up to the cooks - frees up so much time when someone cooks for you; smart idea. All in all, great to see good organisation helping you towards the vinegar strokes. Wish I was 20 (let's be honest 30) years younger - looks a fun place to work.

I find it very interesting that back in Episode 22, when Leo first got the Ship Saw, he expressed that he didn't necessarily need the Ship Saw but wanted to save it anyway for nostalgic reasons. Its hard now to imagine how he would have gotten by without it. But at that time he had no idea of how his dream was going to grow into such a large community. It just proves that destiny has a way of making sure that good things happen to good people.

@Juha Tuomala Juha, your absolutely right. One thing I can point out here; Live Oak is not something you can "bite into". That wood built Old Iron Sides. A ship that got it's nick name from the fact that cannon balls used to bounce off it's planking of live oak. That ships saw makes it appear to be ordinary wood but I bet the guys are having to repair or replace that blade a lot. Cheers to the Tally Ho gang up in Washington from southeast U.S. where the live oak grows.

trongod2000 Just a FYI the USS Constitution aka “Old Iron Sides” is made of White Oak not Live Oak ussconstitutionmuseum.org/2015/05/11/the-wooden-walls/. That said I totally agree about how hard Live Oak is on saw blades. Carbide tip blades certainly make the cutting of live oak much easier and blades last a lot longer but they certainly cost a lot more.
@gullreefclub
@gullreefclub 5 лет назад
DATING HARLEY QUINN Tip Cutting with a Chainsaw is not something that a inexperienced saw user should do especially with hard woods like Live Oak. Cutting the Live Oak pieces like we are seeing done on this video takes a lot of finesse a saw that is very good running order and a sharp chain. The simple fact of the matter is regardless of what kind of wood that is being tip cut with a if your chain gets the least bit dull, if your forcing the saw or you are not holding on to the chainsaw with a good gripe a chainsaw can and will most certainly buck up out of it kerf on the saw operator which can result in a serious injury and to think or say otherwise is quite frankly ignorant. I not trying to be a RU-vid Safety Sally but using a chainsaw like that is a Total Safety Third type of job which means you and you alone are responsible for your safety. I have seen more than one very good saw operator get hurt using a chainsaw like was done on this video because the person got complacent for just a second or trying to make that one last cut before replacing or resharpening the chain.
@RobertFay
@RobertFay 5 лет назад
If you have used a chain saw a lot, you can see and grasp that Finn understands the music and feel of what he is doing. Not all of experienced people can do this well. He is a skilled tradesman who can so this well and knows he can, and why. I would log with him in my forest woods any day.

Now I want to build a little sailboat like that! I could totally do that and I bet there's plans for all manner of versions of such a little boat and what really is stopping me from jumping in? (Lord knows I've looked more than once...) What's stopping me? Knowledge? Surety? Finances? One is increasing, one is at my grasp, should I choose to seek it through the wonders of the internet, and the last is a barrier that is never a barrier when you make prioritized decisions. So, thanks to Leo, Louis, and many others sharing their knowledge through RU-vid, I am going to celebrate and validate their work by hazarding a non-googled guess about what type of boat I would be looking for to have that kind of fun on my local lakes. I will check after I post and then report back. I also ask the community to pitch in as I know they will. As a completely dry-footed, all-digital sailor (at this point), I will guess I'd be looking for a ketch rig (because of the gaff(?) at the top of the mainsail), centerboard 12 foot sailing dinghy. I know I've looked through plans and forums, but not really settled on something, what is recommended for someone who wants to build their first little sailboat? (Note: Edit was for a spelling mistake, not changing my guesses...

And of course, so will I. As far as I am concerned, we are watching a preview of the book and movie. Leo just needs another team to do the video, since he is already too busy with master minding the progress. But I think he will get it done, since he has figured out how to do this restoration in a foreign country, in a remote location, without the assets to do the work to his own very high standards, and yet he is making progress week by week in addition to documenting the project and maintaining complete focus on his goal to save this yacht and sail her back to the UK. And fostering a crop of talent to disperse back into the local and international boat building communities.
@drewlow9731
@drewlow9731 5 лет назад
Viewers and supporters of this project should remember that Leo has set out to sail this boat back to the UK on her own keel. There are many chapters to this story remaining to be told, thus the need to progress from youtube to a documentary to a glorious film of the return of a racing yacht to her home country more than a century after her construction. The quality of the reconstruction to her original lines means that she will be a testimony to the quality of her original construction. There are few people on earth who could accomplish this project.

SHE is really what this project needs- like a special secret weapon. I predict she and hers are going to be great, really important, and you're going to be really sad when she goes. Cheers.

Thanks for the lovely words. Leaving at the end of this project will be very difficult but we hope to return to help in whatever way we can.

Great to see this much progress, but better to see the team assemble, work hard, play and have fun, stuff all those involved will never forget.

Few things are as satisfying as watching those frames being bedded into the pockets cut into the stern timbers! Thanks also for a glimpse at the organizational side of the work: the worksheets and checklists and progress boards. Nice also to see the crew sitting down to dinner. One wonders what the dormitory house down the road is like, and what sort of shenanigans the crew gets up to on their free time there. ;-)

This project - the people, the subject, the excellent quality of the work, the overall 'esprit de corps' - gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Warm and fuzzy is good. So... um... YAY! :-)

What a great group of people you got together for this build. They worked together like they have been part of team on this build from the start. Very cool to see Leo...

Leo, what an AMAZING project you've taken on there. MASSIVE credit to you and all your helpers, and caterers. I've been watching (in awe) from the beginning and find you and the project completely inspiring. It almost seems as if you could have built the ship from scratch more easily. Truly, I am completely in awe at your determination. WOW! Just wow! Regards Mark in the UK

Really enjoying your pacing with the videos. This was really fun to watch! With you and the Acorn to Arabella crew cranking away like this, I am going to have a lot of watching to do!

I second all the comments below Leo, esp. how you built a community. This was a great idea well done Kurt ! By the way, -i know its a machine , but that 100 yr old ships is just lovin' its job…its running like an old Singer sewing machine. Great work.

Starting at about 17:05 can someone "interpret" for me? lol! My ears are too "localized" to quite catch the accent, let alone the drift of the joke... Thanks! :-) Amazing work, all around. It's speaks well for humanity, seeing this kind of efficiency and workmanship develop out of a bunch of total strangers in such a short time! It was warms the cockles of me heart, it does! :-) And yes, had to watch bits of it - ok, most of it! - a second time. That bit where the camera is capturing the view of the new futtocks (shut up spell-pecker, it AIN'T buttocks!!. dammit!!) lined up and the old ones in the distance... It really showed the phenomenal amount of work - and the progress that's been made!!

Ministry of Funny Walks @ 8:00. Lovely to see the view of all the frames down the centerline, and the little sail boat at the end was great, it would make a cute little tender!

The level of organization developed to break the framing process into related and sequenced steps, for a rather large "work force" is truly impressive. Hopefully the organizational effort will be documented along with the actual build process, as it will provide an added dimension of useful knowledge to others. Greg

Incredible amount of work going on there Leo! Glad to see that you guys are also having a bit of fun along the way. Watching this build, I can't help imaginning how the builders of the Tally Ho did this 109 yrs ago without the tools & technology that we have today. Pretty amazing....

Not above 4 or 5 times. What? Why are you looking at me like that? I don't have a problem. I can quit any time I want. I try to get by on Acorn to Arabella or Tips From a Shipwright when I can't score any Tally Ho, but it's just not the same buzz.

I watch these series and am amazed at what you all are accomplishing. And then I wonder, how did they built the original without all the power tools? That make me even more impressed thinking about that. But you guys are teaching me,and I am sure so many others, how it is done. Bravo sirs and gals, Bravo!

Leo, you look like you got some sleep! Keep it going, Tally Ho is beginning to look like she's coming back. I know the work you've done before. Like anything else, the preparation is not seen as visible progress but takes the most time. You've done amazing work.
