Have you heard about Francis Chan's recent comments on the Eucharist and the ancient Church? Father Josiah, an Eastern Orthodox priest, answers Francis Chan's question "What would be your advice for me, in taking this next step?" from a recent discussion Francis Chan had with the Bible Answer Man (Hank Hanegraaff) and Metropolitan Yohan (not Eastern Orthodox). In my interview with Fr. Josiah Trenham, founder and director of Patristic Nectar Publications, I asked him about Francis Chan's question and the response he would give to him.

Been loving these interactions with Hank, Francis and KP. Interesting comments ty. On the one hand I agree there should be a line of consistency, a foundation we all agree on, creeds being one indicator, but Jesus also said when He left wolves would come in and not spare the flock correct?

Pastor Chan is articulating *the* exact questions I had before I became an Orthodox Christian. I was raised Protestant by two godly parents who instilled in me a love of God and the Holy Scriptures, and I am so thankful for that. I used to speak badly about my Protestant upbringing, until my priest called me out on it. He quietly reminded me that I'd learnt many, many good things from being raised in the Reformed tradition, and instead of scorning it, I needed to be thankful for having the Christian parents I had who made sure I loved God and the Holy Scriptures. When he put it like that, it cut me deep. I realized that my Protestant upbringing was a necessary step of preparation for me on my spiritual journey, and now I thank God for it.
@Val.Kyrie.
@Val.Kyrie. 3 года назад
Yes, you should be thankful you had a Christian upbringing 🙂 I was born and raised atheist, converted at 28, becoming orthodox now.... the basic moral and social benefits of a childhood of Christianity shouldn’t be downplayed. I wish I’d been raised in even a moderate Christian home, I probably would have a much better outcome all around. Sure people think it sucks and you’re brainwashed and society sucks in general, but given a choice between atheism and Christianity in childhood, I’d gladly have been raised Christian *even if* i rebelled and left the faith as an adult.
@harrykezelian8009
@harrykezelian8009 2 года назад
Absolutely Christa don't ever be scornful or embarrassed of your parents and the Protestants they raised you to love Jesus Christ and that is the most important part. And that is the version of Christianity they knew and understood and I'm sure as good and loving people they saw that was the way to life rather than a worldly life.

God bless! I'm on a similar journey, but my big stumbling block is EO and RC view of Mary. I need help on this! I understand what EO and RC "believe" about Mary, but my issue is WHY should we believe these things about her. How does one overcome this obstacle? From what I can see, mariology really developed after constantine, and it seems to have been an evolution of hero worship.

The good news is the True Church, if you are a true believer, is YOU. Or rather, is us. The church is not just an institution or building. It is the community, the brotherhood and sisterhood of believers, connected by Christ, One in the Holy Spirit. You don’t have to look for the “right” building. And I will say, it is definitely transforming me. I’ve had miracles and supernatural things happen in my life as a Protestant. I’ve been used in some of them as well. And I came to faith in Christ in a jail cell floor after reading the Gospel of St. Matthew. But doing the prayers of the Orthodox Church have added so much grace to my life. I haven’t been to the East since 09. But I’m being patient. Through study, prayer, fasting, and trials I know God will lead me to the true Church. He knows my heart. I do feel the road is to the East. And the back lash I will receive from my circles will be a big one. Thanks again.

"Almost like a popularity contest... I'm so popular, follow me." I was raised Protestant, and eventually converted to Catholicism. What he is describing is exactly correct. It's funny that Protestants balk so much at the 'call no man father' passage. Spiritual fatherhood is a scriptural principle, Jesus isn't talking about that. It is full out worship of Jesus, the Lamb of God.

This is where I am. The protestant services are all "I,I, you, you" and very little "HE". Yet the liberty of working out your own salvation with fear and trembling can't be denied. I think we've lost the fear and trembling. My picture: Orthodoxy is the responsible, turned bitter father who was abandoned by the libertine wife; Catholicism is that wife; and protestants are the children of the broken union--- some developed into spiritually healthy, functional people--others are completely lost, devoured by wolves because of their vulnerability.

Then I would do a serious investigation into all of the Eucharistic miracles. I would then read about the greatest mass conversion to Christianity in the history of the world. Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared in Mexico to the Aztecs and 9 million converted in 8 years! That’s about 90,000 baptisms per month for 9 years! Chew on that for a while. All became Roman Catholic. It’s no wonder the church is still divided listening to some of the comments.

@drag0nfly_girl What are you implying? That the 9 million conversions were not from God? What intrigues me is that he produced a video series in which one of the many things he addressed was this idea of people "feeling their way" towards God, by asking, seeking, knocking, seeing the Eternal power and Divine nature manifested in creation. It seems that now he is the one experiencing that, feeling his way towards the true Church as Christ established her. If he converts, that will expose millions of Evangelical christians to Orthodoxy, and could possibly create a massive influx of people returning to the roots of their faith. Let us pray for Francis Chan, and all the Christians in America, that all would be united under Christ in the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

He is speaking in general that we should give our attention first to the works of saints. There are many many workes and it depends on what you want. If you are interested in reading Church Fathers that deal with many dogmatic issues you can take a look here: svspress.com/categories/Popular-Patristics-Series/ Here is other patristic series: www.amazon.com/Early-Church-Fathers-38-Vols/dp/1565630815/ref=pd_lpo_14_t_1/136-5017264-1138152?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=1565630815&pd_rd_r=9426c01b-5274-463b-b866-a7b8528e56ee&pd_rd_w=oKBkN&pd_rd_wg=M0IsS&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=V2BD4CJEH6XZ7EX4DZP2&psc=1&refRID=V2BD4CJEH6XZ7EX4DZP2 But there are many more books, for example on the life and teachings of the saints. Here is one about a modern saint, st. Porphyrios, that helped my wife to become Orthodox. It is not argumentative as we in the west are used to think of apologetics, but by simply reading and breathing the love and wisdom of this saint my wife was introduced to the authentic love of Christ www.amazon.com/Wounded-Love-Wisdom-Saint-Porphyrios/dp/9607120191/ref=pd_lpo_14_img_1/136-5017264-1138152?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=9607120191&pd_rd_r=984f0099-318f-420b-800d-74e8866edc3e&pd_rd_w=LqmGQ&pd_rd_wg=9ubei&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=SEN0B2DCJPN7HSPM1GBV&psc=1&refRID=SEN0B2DCJPN7HSPM1GBV

2:55 This is the crux of it all for Protestants: pride and arrogance. It was the case for me before I surrendered to the One Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church of Christ - The Orthodox Church. Since my journey began into Christ’s church, I noticed so much pride in my soul - I knew everything I needed to know through Scripture and the Holy Spirit. As I gave myself over to the Truth, I found how arrogant I was(am). I began to hear that same arrogance and pride in all the Protestant family and friends I spoke to(and still do). My soul longs for their salvation, because I remember well the state of my soul as a Protestant before Christ led me to His Holy Church.

It was at the time of St. Columcille virtually identical to Eastern Christianity. Pope Adrian, ( the only English Pope) thought it a good idea to bring Irish Christianity in line with Roman Catholicism. God willing may the island of Iona be the Renaissance of Celtic monasticism.

Then you may as well go to Orthodoxy - the original. When Rome separated from the united Church, they open the door for the Protestant reformation too. The Protestants corrected some of the errors of Rome and later Rome’s Counter Reformation followed the lead of the Protestants, but neither Rome nor the Protestants have went back to Orthodoxy yet. The Celtic church was originally Orthodox and not of the later split when Rome left. Before 1000 AD the British Isles were Orthodox. When Rome split, they being powerful and closer in proximity, forced the Celtic peoples to come with Rome. For interest, read how Patrick preached against the errors of Rome with vehemence. He wanted to maintain pure Orthodoxy.

No, each persons salvation is ultimately a mystery between him and God, and the Church never declares that we know what has happened to a particular person after death except for the few who we canonize as saints. Even someone like Judas we do not say we KNOW is in hell. Ultimately, humility should lead one to desire obedience, bcuz this is the true path of self denial and freedom from pride. Christ established a particular ministry in giving His apostles the authority to bind and loose on earth, as well as giving Peter specifically the keys to the Kingdom, and He told His apostles that he who listens to them, listens to Him. Obedience and humility should call one to the ordered Church Christ established and cause one to flee from the disorder and false freedom where everyone presumes to have the authority that Christ gave to Peter, and which Peter and the apostles passed on to those who succeeded them

The problem with holding to a theory that the ancient church was monolithic in doctrine is not true. There are doctrines, like the Trinity, that survived based on God's Mercy and Sovereignty, for the majority of the ancient Christians abandoned it. So then to make these kinds of arguments, especially when it comes to the eucharist, is extremely ahistorical. For the Church fathers did not necessarily believe or agreed on all these things. Even looking at the writings between Origin and Anthansius when it comes to the relationship of the persons of the God-Head, is something that is concerning to me. Therefore, you can make the argument all day concerning that people can make their own interpretations when they read their Bibles. However, that has been happening since the beginning of the Church. Also, you had the Church condemning Athanasius for being Trinitarian. Therefore, in Athanasius' own view the only way to defend the deity of Christ was not to appeal to the authority of the Church but to the Word of God. Hence, the Church was wrong based on God's word. This is the conundrum: The issue is then how do you know the Church is false, but by the Word. How do you know how to interpret the Word, by what the Church says. It goes to show either both are not right. One goes to Sola Scriptura, the other to Sola Ecclessia.

As a human being made in the image and likeness of God, I always have to bring “Orthodoxy” back to the fundamental reality of what it means for God to become man. @AccordingtoJohn
@AccordingtoJohn 3 года назад
The Gospel is that The second Person of the Trinity, the Divine Logos became man and in doing so He united to himself humanity and healing it, saving it. By dying on the Cross and rising from the dead, Christ trampled death by death and bestowing life to those in the tomes. We have our life in Christ then, are adopted as sons of God by being in the Son of God. And we are in Christ by being united to his Body, the Church, in faith and love and in repentance. Nurtured by, and participating by the mysteries of Church, which are the work of the Holy Spirit, we are living the new life in Christ, going from glory to glory in humility and participating in the uncreated Energies of God. The assurance is not in ourselves but in Christ that the path of salvation he has given us, the Church, leads to salvation, which is divinization by grace not by nature.

The question should be do you see yourselves in a church as spoken of in the Word of God, in the Bible when it was written. To me as a non denominational believer. Yes absolutely I can in those early churches that Paul and others describe in the Word of God.

The early Churches had bishops appointed by the apostles and a head bishop in Rome. Paul gives instructions for appointing bishops tp Timothy in the Bible. It was a structured and organized Body. Modern day Evangelicalism/Non-denominationalism is anything but structured and has abandoned the original understanding of the liturgy/mass

I'm a evangelical Christian. I was not born in a family of believers, I was actually born in former USSR, where atheism was sort of a State Religion. But I was searching for meaning of life and at age of 16 I recieved Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I was looking for God in different religions, I visited an Orthodox Church, but as Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh said, you can't realy believe in God unless you saw a light of eternity shining through someone. At that time of my life I saw that light through people from a Baptist Church. Many years went by. About 10 years ago, or more, I started reading some Church Fathers and was fascinated with they lifes and they relationships with God. During these years some of my christian friends left protestant church and became Orthodox....then all of them turned they back on me, I was no more a friend for them. Later, all of them, except one, left Orthodox Church and returned to the World, to a lifestile of unbelievers. That one didn't leave the church, in the contrary, he became a deacon in a Russian Orthodox Church in US. With time I became more and more interested in Orthodoxy, I had lots of questions. I thought my friend, who is an Orthodox deacon, would answer my questions. But when I started to ask, he just pushed me away with such words as "if the Church (meaning Orthodox) is not your mother, God is not your Father".... Despite of all these negative experiences with orthodox believers, I'm still drown to the Orthodox Theology. I watch orthodox channels on youtube everyday, and read books. I try to understand some difficult for an evangelical mind consepts. My theology though, already changed a lot..., I was looking for someone, who will represent the true Orthodoxy. But, so far, orthodox churches in my city remind me more some civil clubs, and those who speak publicly are mostly the same type of people like in every other church, well educated, proud, convinced that they are the only true believers. And those who are exceptions, who look genuine, who I would trast to answer my questions, they are either already dead (Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh, and Elder Paisios), or they are far away from me, and I'm not sure if they will be willing to answer... And the saddest thing, I found no present day Russian speaking orthodox Preast or a Monk, who would have a channel on RU-vid, and who will be as wise as orthodox teachers of the West.... It's very sad. I'm at the point where I need guidance, like pastor Chan, I'm asking myself, what's next, and I have no one to help me find an answer....

Of course you do, Christ himself. Let him lead the way. The path may not be clear right now, but keep your spirit pointed towards Christ and pray for his guidance as you navigate your faith. Many blessings on your journey.

Praise the LORD, O My Soul …2I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. 3Put not your trust in princes, in mortal man, who cannot save.4When his spirit departs, he returns to the ground; on that very day his plans perish.… Job Responds to Zophar …6The tents of robbers are safe, and those who provoke God are secure-those who carry their god in their hands. 7But ask the animals, and they will instruct you; ask the birds of the air, and they will tell you.8Or speak to the earth, and it will teach you; let the fish of the sea inform you.…

As I turned from Word of Faith for the reasons described, I also have seen the value of the ancient churches. Still not there for various reasons. I think we have to reach further back for purity. Just as protestants have followed crooked paths for 400 years that have created this mess, I think the early church deviated when it gained political power. Earnest believers seeing that deviance is what CREATED protestantism.

15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not [g]prevail against it. 19And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth [h]will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” What is so hard here to understand. First Jesus, God incarnate, blesses Simon. Then he changes Simon's name to Peter (rock). Then he says on this rock he will build his church. Then he gives Peter the keys of the Kingdom and give him the power to forgive or retain sins instituting the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Peter was the Bishop of Rome, not Constantinople. Saint Peter is buried beneath Saint Peter's Basilica IN ROME. I am just a lowly lay person but, as I said, what is so hard to understand about this?
