Corellii was a miracle. With his huge, gorgeous dramatic tenor, he could match Birgit Nilsson's power in "Turandot" note for note (I heard them!). he was handsome as a movie star. And here in this tender aria he maintains an admirable controlled, even intimate lyrical line. Just amazing!

The open {verticle} jaw that an earlier commentator mentioned is an essential requirement in order to form the Ah vowel with full resonance. Every time I hear F.C. i remember that he began late on the grand stage at thirty three years old. Those years of preparation produced a truly gorgeous instrument which is warm, full, and to me reveals a beautiful soul.

can u suggest any book or reading on internet that explains proper tehnique (like corelli)? im learning classical singing and my teacher is saying that i should focus my vowels on the hard palate ( starting from behind top teeth through hard palate and back). Is this the right way?

" e poi , lei che alternative propone?...... suggerisce forse di chiudere i teatri? e di chiudere con la lirica? suggerisce di stare tutti a casa a sentire i vecchi dischi e basta? io ho bisogno di sentire bravi cantanti quanto lei ma continuo a non perdere le speranze ,,,, solo in rari casi particolarrmente disastrosi i giovani artisti sono presi da me di mira, altrimenti non esprimo commento. i cantanti di oggi non hanno le qualità che avevano gli artisti del secolo scorso..e questo lo sanno anche i sordi........ tuttavia non facciamo che ripeterci facendo continuamente paragoni sterili e dando giudizi solo negativi sui giovani . questi giudizi non fanno che alimentare la sfiducia anche nei giovani che tentano di intraprendere la difficile e dura carriera del cantante lirico. . mi consenta di suggerirle di dare i suoi giudizi ma senza che essi manchno di un giusto ottimismo dobbiamo mostrare una disponibilità migliore verso i giovani artisti e continuare a sperare che se ne formino sempre di migliori. la saluto cordialmente

bruna azzurra Amica mia, il problema è semplicemente tecnico. Quello che al momento è andato perduto è la capacità di una profonda e costruttiva autocritica in vista del miglior risultato possibile. Siamo arrivati a voler fare approssimativamente sfruttando i trucchi della tecnologia e siamo arrivati ad un consumismo mercenario che spaccia per buone cose pessime. Nel canto la conoscenza era già compiuta un secolo fa, perché oggi non si riesce a cantare come allora? Colpa di pessimi maestri, pessimi studenti e avidità di guadagno insieme a scarsa coscienza artistica. Vogliamo far finta di niente? Non sono nessuno ma quando ho insegnato a sciare a mia figlia, ho preteso che imparasse dalla scaletta. Adesso è libera di fare quel che vuole, ma almeno sa. E così faccio le mie critiche sperando di essere costruttivo e non di fare polemica sterile, tant'è che motivo tutto quel che dico e sono disponibile alla discussione. Eravamo il paese del Bel Canto, non vede come stiamo? Se legge le biografie dei veri cantanti antichi, si accorgerà della dedizione e della scrupolosità del loro atteggiamento da grandi professionisti. Comunque questa storia non riguarda solo il canto, ovviamente. In sostanza ho imparato a non accontentarmi se non del meglio, iniziando da me stesso, mi spiace di non aver il tempo materiale d'imparare a piegare come Valentino Rossi, altrimenti lo farei ed è un mio grande cruccio. Riccardo Barreca gentile signor Riccardo , mi deve scusare se mi sono infilata forse a "gamba tesa" sul commento da lei fatto su Corelli. le assicuro ,tuttavia ,che da quella sua critica non trapela affatto il desiderio di volere essere costruttivo .è solo per questo motivo che io le ho scritto. solo rispondendomi lei mi fa capire che è disponibile alla discussione. .quanto lei dice è sempre giusto o meglio, a mio parere, quasi sempre giusto visto che io sono una persona che, come lei, pretende sempre, giorno dopo giorno, il meglio da se stessa, mentre dagli altri pretendo il meglio si, ma solo per gradi. viviamo un buio periodo per la nostra lirica ma ciò non mi fa accettare che le cose debbano continuare ad andare in questa maniera quindi , in fondo, la differenza che trovo fra lei e me è che io sono solo una buona ottimista e mai categorica nelle mie affermazioni, mentre lei mostra di non avere più fiducia nel futuro. io mi permetto di consigliarle invece di non farsi mancare il piacere che provoca all'anima il sapere di non essere ancora arrivati alla " fine" io credo fermamente che sia un nostro preciso dovere essere fiduciosi sul futuro... la saluto

bruna azzurra Forse la differenza fra di noi consiste nel fatto che io cerco di cantare bene, da dilettante si capisce e nello studio mi sono reso conto e ho imparato tante cose che non mi permettono più di accettare certi difetti perfino plateali, in alcune speranze del nostro attuale panorama lirico. Oltre a questo vedo che vengono probabilmente imposti cantanti mediocri o appena sufficienti, a discapito di altri sicuramente migliori. Come è successo nella Manon Lescaut al Teatro dell'opera di Roma, per esempio. Quanto alla fiducia....non ci spero, la pretendo. Saluti

Riccardo Barreca so per esperienza personale che chi studia il canto diventa poi una persona che non sopporta i difetti degli altri cantanti, anzi direi che i cantanti sono più accaniti anche dei critici musicali nel giudicare i colleghi . ma poi, calpestando il palcoscenico, si capiscono tante cose che all'inizio sfuggono e si impara , quindi, ad essere più tolleranti . vedrà che, con il tempo, lei arriverà a darmi ragione. la saluto augurandole una brillante carriera. b.a.

Does anyone know why corelli would sing a lot of songs with high Cs a half note lower? The high B seemed super comfortable. Conserving the voice is very important, but why are all of his live Che gelida manina's (even in operas) a half note lower? Corelli had the capacity to go up to Eb so this seems very conservative.

Nerves. He had major stage freight, where as Bonisolli was a bit crazy, bonisolli was the most consistent tenor of all time

Because Che Gelida Manina’s original key is that of G major. (Not Ab as most tenors sing it.) The reason why this aria is most commonly sung in Ab is that the tenor singing the part of Rodolfo in La Bohéme’s premiere (Evan Gorga), asked Puccini to raise the aria a half a step upwards because he had difficulties with the aria’s lower part (‘ruban tutti I gioelli due ladri, gli occhi belli’). This was not Puccini’s will, as seen when Caruso sang the aria for him in an audition and asked Puccini to lower the piece by half a step because he (Caruso) didn’t have a safe high C; to which Puccini exclaimed “Oh please! It is much better this way! (lower)”. I personally agree with Puccini, the original key expresses the aria’s romantic and warm feeling the best; while the popular version (Ab major) gives a much colder feeling that just feels odd given the aria’s meaning (love and poetry).

@@Tenore1921 You may be right but the modulation at Mimi's "cerca!" for the aria to be in G major sounds a lot,less idiomatic than no modulation when the aria is sung in Ab.

Those are two very contradictory terms. Bigger voices have a lot more weight, it takes much more force and power to move a big voice. A singer with a real dramatic voice, is never going to sound like a light lyric tenor. The reverse is also true, a light lyric tenor will never sound as powerful. These are opposite types of voices. That being said, Franco Corelli is actually singing with a lot of control and delicacy for the size and weight of his voice. He also had quite good legato, which you don’t always find with dramatic voices. This a superb dramatic version of Che Gelida Manina.
