Deep humanity, great intimacy, profound belief...If one is not spiritual before hearing the electrifying Franco Corelli sing, you might be after. Corelli's enormous, metallic voice was like a javelin flying through the air. But it is his phrasing and his enunciation which give his vocal art it accessibility and vast expressive dimension. Overwhelmingly moving experience. Thank you for posting.
I saw him sing this with Grace Bumbry and Ezio Falgello. The singers all held the open scores. But Franco, just before the final powerful phrase, just folded the score and put it under his arm. I saw him 4 time and each was magic.
Corelli "acts" the Ingemisco in the old Mario Lanza style. Unusual for a religious aria in latin. And he surely was acting in front of the camera over the audio track of his own recording, because we don't see the orchestra. It's all done in a TV studio, as was the standard before good live recordings as we have now. Anyway, tks for the video clip of this controversial tenor.
Yes, you have it right about the dubbed style of that era-and let's face it the setting is a bit campy-but also the taste of that time. (I mean one may or may not think Lanza a great tenor (who really knows because his was a true studio voice and he was not an opera singer) but those goofy movies and their plots......) But my question is about the phrase "controversial tenor" to you? What does that mean?
Ingemisco tamquam reus, Culpa rubet vultus meus, Supplicanti, supplicanti parce, deus. Qui mariam absolvisti Et latronem exaudisti, Mihi quoque spem dedisti. Mihi quoque spem dedisti. Preces meae non sunt dignae; Sed tu bonus fac benigne Ne perenni cremer igne. Inter oves locum praesta, Et ab haedis me sequestra, Inter oves locum praesta, Et ab haedis me sequestra, Statuens, statuens in parte dextra. Et ab haedis me sequestra, Statuens in parte dextra
Franco Corell was one of the all time great operatic tenors, but sorely out of place as an oratorio singer. My favorite recording of this aria is by Jussi Bjorling. Ordinarily opera singers do not sing oratorio or lieder, but the Verdi Requiem is a huge work on an operatic scale, but stil requires the soloist to take it down a notch. Bjorling was one of the few opera singers equally at home on the recital stage as he was at the Met.
Every entry for this piece of music finds you pushing Bjoerling who was absolutely one of the greats in history and whose recording of this music is at the top of the list...BUT, as to your complaint about too much emotion...First of all, this is Verdi, the musical spokesman for Italian musical expression, second it is a funeral mass...what could require more emotion? Frankly thought this Corelli version is not my all time favorite it is one of them, along with Bjoerling. and Carreras and Fabiani. I think you need to ease up and enjoy the music!
Well Tom you cant blame Sven for pushing the great JB. This one JB is my favourite but Corelli is damn close. From my point of view JB and Corelli are the greatest.
