Corelli's fierce performance of Un Di never fails to send shivers up my spine. He was THE MAN!. IL TENORE. I had the great pleauser of seeing him live a number of times. During a performance of Turandot he reversed the verses in Nessun Dorma but no one cared. He could have been singing a laundry list. For voice, charisma, and looks Corelli was world class. A great tenor.

Thank you for posting this section of the 1973 Chenier. Corelli just 2 years before his retirement still in very good voice--who does Chenier with this commitment and vocal beauty today. Another wonderful performance is that of Cappuccilli as Gerard. I hope you will post his "Nemico della patria" which is splendid.

This is absolutely beautiful. Steve sometimes if the tenor is in good voice he'll want it slower to show off his voice. You should know that because you responded like someone who knows what he is talking about. Yet you don't.
Non ne sono convinto-Ho ascoltato in un cd estratti da Andrea Chenier del 1954 al S.Carlo di Napoli con la Signora De Cavalieri e Del Monaco fa di quest'opera un'autentica pietra miliare in base all'interpretazione vocale e che io non ho mai udito da nessun altro interprete-ascolti questa performance per credere al mio commento-in poche parole a mio modo di intendere il recitar-cantando Del Monaco è il cantante-attore più completo del repertorio lirico,quindi non approvo il suo commento.saluti
Dio, quanto è ROVINOSO quel portamento prima dell'acuto finale. Ma poi il fraseggio, le dinamiche? Sulla voce non si discute. Sarà una questione interpretativa ma proprio non mi convince.
Caro Giovanni La Franca: Del Monaco ha un solo difetto, quando interpreta, tutte le opere; vengono otellizate. In quanto alla Callas è stata sopravalutata, costruita ad arte.

The best Chenier's are Corelli and Carreras. I think Carreras takes it in the technical department.. But Corelli takes him hands down in the feel department.

How people find him fascinating is beyond me. His diction is unbearable and his voice is so strained. Listen to him speak (you can find interviews on youtube) and you will hear his voice. Caruso (i did not hear him speaking, but I am willing to risk it), Gigli, Di Stefano, Bergonzi, Pavarotti or Domingo are natural talents. The Corelli's and Kaufmann's of the world are not. They are well trained sportsmen, not artists. They achieve power, but lack beauty.
Very late reply, but I will add it. Corelli's voice is not strained at all, he had a dramatic voice. All of the other people on your list have lyrical voices, so they are opposites in some ways. Corelli's voice was very big, it takes effort to move such a voice. Despite having a dramatic voice Corelli had easier high notes then a lot of the lyric tenors on that list. Corelli sang with strong passion and emotion, that is what dramatic voices are meant for. Corelli sang with loads of squillo he had heroic high notes, some parts of his style was closer to the older bel canto style, when singers had squillo. The role of Andrea Chenier is meant for a heavy voiced voiced tenor such as Corelli. You are the one who don't understand dramatic voices. Kaufman and Corelli has nothing in common, Kaufman has a small voice which he darkens in an artificial manner, he does not have heroic high notes or squillo either. It only shows a lack of knowledge if you think a dramatic voice should sound like a lyrical voice.
