I wouldn't give Frank too much stick for not paying the Ikettes any more than union rates. He was recently removed from his entire band almost going up in smoke in Switzerland and someone almost killing him. He also didn't have any LA studios he could book quickly for his band (since he literally had to keep an 8 piece unit on the road to keep himself financially solvent.) This was something he bitched about constantly in interviews at the time. Also his manager (and Linda Rondstadt's) Herb Cohen was robbing him blind. He was a man possessed to get his music out against severe barriers. Using Bolic Studio, through knowing Ike's close druggie friend Johnny Guitar Watson, was probably his only option. Think about it. Why would Frank use Ike Turner when he wouldn't tolerate druggies? Apostrophe and Overnight Sensation had to be hits. After his lawsuits with Cohen, and Tina's subsequent leaving Ike... had he asked her to sing backup for him, it would probably have been at any rate she wanted. He was always receptive to artists like Sting, Jack Bruce and John Lennon playing with him and giving them proper credit on his albums.

And Tina loved it. They had so much fun with Frank that she decided to make soup for all of them.

And later Ike came in to hear what was being recorded and exclaimed "what is this shit?"... and he wouldn't let Frank use Tina or Ikettes name in the credits...

Nicely said! Yes he takes not only the audience, but many musicians. I have bought jazz albums and in the jacket they give their foundations to when they played with Zappa and Mothers of Invention. I did get to see him play once. It was magical. He smoked a lot, he woudl smoke and direct his band with a conductor's baton. Then he would put it aside, take a drag of his cigarette, put the butt in the tuning string part of his guitar to hold it, then wail on that axe like nobodys business. And Terry Bozzio on percussion would put a different viking hat on depending on which gong he was about to strike, then hang the hat back on its special rack. I still remember clear as day.. that was early 80s. RIP...

One of the best guitar players ever. Very few in his class. And most in his class were country players. Johnny Winter was close. And he was best in tandem with his brother, Edgar. Zappa was truly in a class of his own.
