I had similiar problems with the soda cans. The thread was an old spool lifted from the missus sewing box, pretty certain it is cotton. Might try adding a little weight to the clapper or increase the distance between the cans.

I was thinking a heaver clapper might be the trick. I'll try that next time I have the HV rig out. :) Thanks for the tip.

Awesome video! Quality build there! Better than the drink can bells I made! Harvesting high voltage from the TV with a sheet of foil... Brilliant! I have seen electroscopes charged that way, but never seen work done till now. The turn off spark was a nice surprise! What are you using for thread? I'm having issues. Cotton seems to be a conductor at the voltages I have. As does my plastic chopstick top bar. My dinger (ring pull) just sticks to one side (neg), along with most of the string.

A truly smart man, (tongue in cheek,. ) WOULD HAVE LET THE BELLS RING UNTIL THEY STOPPED AND FILMED IT for longer video and much greater income potential! I would have watched gladly in the background while working!
