Very recently, I got a sad news. Mr. Russell Sherman, great pianist, magnifisant piano teacher, passed away last week, on September 30. I thank him for his great achievements and sincerely pray for his soul. Life is short; art is eternal. 🙏🥀

청년 임윤찬과 중년 손민수와 노년 러셸 셔먼의 연주가 전부 다르다는 점이 인상적이네요.....갈수록 필터로 한번 걸러낸듯한 강렬함이 느껴지고 나이먹음의 신중함이 보여요 선생님과 선생님의 선생님이라 그런가 비슷한듯 다른 세 분의 연주로 듣는 사람들은 즐겁네요 모두 다 너무 좋습니다😊

It is a great gift when a musician can completely change your opinion of a composer. That happened to me in 1973 when Russell Sherman played the Liszt Transcendental Etudes in Jordan Hall at the New England Conservatory. He convinced me, in one hour of great artistry, that Liszt was a great composer. Thank you Russell Sherman, and Rest-in- Peace.
This was magnificent! At 78 to be able to play all 12 Transcendental Etudes in a recital is one thing; to be able to play them at this level with so much artistry is something else. So many interesting ideas in Maestro Sherman's interpretation of each of the Etudes. It's a shame that I can't find his studio recording of these etudes anywhere.
Btw, Maestro Sohn, I'm just in love with your recording of all 32 Beethoven Sonatas for SONY. You really got to the core of each of the sonatas. Congratulations on such a magnanimous achievement!

Thank you very much. I'd only heard of Sherman through Yunchan Lim.. So now I have heard Yunchan, his teacher, Min Soo, and now Min Soo's own teacher, Russell Sherman with the same work. Brother! ,So thought provoking for the listener. A massive work, so different in each version, and each of them differently transcendental. I think I'll just enjoy each version for its own sake.
WOW! These are really good! A great combination of virtuosity and musicianship. There is so much more to piano playing than dazzling speed and technique. Mr Sherman proves that. I really like the tempo he played these at. Each piece is beautiful in it's own right. Wonderful playing. We lost him just recently. R.I.P. Mr Sherman.
I would love to hear Robert Levin's interpretation of this piece. About thirty years ago I went to one of Sherman's Mozart concerts and was dismayed to him stop and pause in places where Levin would improvise in the style of Mozart. Levin has a much lighter. Romantic touch to the keyboard overall.
Wonderful to hear these poetic masterpieces played by a real musician. So rare in these days of brainless technicians who rush the whole set at breakneck speed, never having even the slightest idea what they are playing (butchering, really).
He really makes music out of the 1st etude . I wonder why he decided to do these instead of Valee.d'oberman,Dante Sonata or one of the other big pieces instead of these virtuoso pieces which require flash and always sound more difficult than they really are except for FeuxFollets and a few others. The Chopin etudes -even the slow ones present problems one can't even imagine exist until one really knows the piano. If you don't think first the Chopin etudes systems of techniques might never come to you.
