Review of the new A16 unit for Ricoh's weirdo GXR camera system. Test & sample gallery here; plus.google.co... A16 Ricoh Lens unit - 16MP, 24mm - 85mm F3.5-5.5
I have owned one of these, the 50mm module to be exact, for almost two years. The camera isn't intended to appeal to a huge market. They aren't going for Canon or Nikon sales figures here. If you don't think the system is for you, whatever the reason- that's probably good enough. - The camera is very well built and feels great. The user interface is wonderful, if you give it a day and a half and engage your mind during that initial break in period. My experience with the GXR has been great
holly crap that surprised me when you removed the lens plus the censor... this is an odd piece of tech... very interesting and effective by the looks of it
Cool idea, they get to make multiple lens/sensors and multiple bodies, presumably which allows to customer to choose a setup more suited to them. It's kind of like the sega mega drive, mega cd and 32x
Capabilities such as video recording are part if the lens/sensor unit... that's kinda the whole point of the modular system Ricoh designed into the GXR For example, some other modules can't do video at all, others have different video capabilities than are offered on the A16.
Do you think they're likely to release and update to the body ever? It just seems like they're well behind the game on the video and an update could solve that
I just grabbed and 50 mm macro and a 28 mm deciding if I should keep both I paid about 230 for each one how do you think they compared to The K5 2 they were in a really excellent condition
Im Not A Photographer, But I was Thinking Of Getting A Camera To "snap" some High Quality shot's while im out or bored, im 16 so i cant afford a $2000 camera do you have any suggestions on a good but reasonably priced camera
that's not really the the kind of "flat looking" I was talking about. (But yes, the people who are going to spend the time and effort in colour grading their footage, aren't going to be shooting on gear like this anyway, so no, a flat tonal range and subdued saturation and contrast isn't a good thing... people who shoot video on this gear want it to look "ready" right off the card, which it certainly is not IMO).
For a second there I thought it was the same letters as the Car(Engine) from Speed Racer. Great Stills! Neat Advancement in replacing/updating the Sensor/shutter and not the body.
And what makes you think they can't build in on board ancillary processing INTO the lens/sensor unit to accommodate anything the electronics in the body couldn't? (Hint... the CAN, and... in fact... ARE)
yes, it has filter threads, why the fuck wouldn't it? It'd only be notable and worth mentioning if it DIDN'T because it's such a common thing. I don't even OWN a lens that doesn't have it (aside from Fisheye lenses, where the physical protrusion of the lens itself makes it impossible regardless) As for the hotshoe... yeah, Lenses don't have them, and this is a rveiew of the lens unit, not the camera body, which I only dipped into briefely as a way to provide context. for the unusual mount system
Except that those we designed to be put together to function as a whole (No game really did that, sadly, except for Pier Solar and the Great Architects, which was released in 2010, which only used the Genesis cart + SCD audio, I don't think anything's used all four expansions... yet), so you could buy the base for cheaper than the entire unit.
Flat-looking video isn't necessarily a bad thing. It is actually required if one wants more flexibility in color correcting/grading (flat image is likely to have less overexposed areas or crushed dark tones). But for those who do not color correct/grade their videos this can be a disadvantage. And potential users of this camera are likely to be in the second group (that do not correct tonality or color grade). Shame for video quality - photos look quite nice, very rich in color.
basically i want to take photos of any thing i think looks cool, in other words i want to take photos of scenery, and learning....um i think will learn as i go
Nice review, and If I was not so broke/skinned, I would seriously have a look at this camera for stills, unless I can find a good cheap Nikon DSLR that will work with the lens from my old Nikon D70, as it's a nice piece of glass, and I hate to throw away something that could be usable.
I own M sensor what is that the a16 I just picked up the 28th mm and a 50 mm macro I'm wondering if they're both worth keeping I'm not too worried about the autofocus just picture quality I paid about 230 for each of them. Have you ever tried to K5 2 how does the image compare
"To snap" is a bit too vague to make any good decisions from. What do you want to shoot? How do you want to shoot? How deep are you willing to go in the learning of photography? Etc.
I think the very logic of this camera is a waste of money and production. Why on earth would you have 1 sensor for each lens ? It's not like their lenses are spectacular and they MUST need a dedicated sensor to give the best out of the lens, NO. It's just a marketing failure wasting ressources. Instead of having a bunch of normal sensors, you could have just one great quality one. I always prefer quality over quantity. So this camera however good it is has a very uneffective logic behind it.
