Great video. I think you're right on when you talk about the lack of superstars that even get to UFA, so it skews the marketplace to make the UFAs appear to be far better than they actually are. It's like many GMs view the UFA pool based on a curve. But the problem is, the best UFA typically didn't get a 99 on the "test". He scored a 84, but they wind up getting paid like they scored a 99 (aka Sidney Crosby). And the GMs that recognize this and avoid UFAs are the ones dominating the league, simply by default. They're not even necessarily getting better, so much as their rivals are shooting themselves in the foot constantly. Dough Armstrong has built a solid team for the past 7 or 8 years without really even one big UFA signing (Paul Stastny was probably the biggest signing and he didn't give Stastny $9 million for 8 years, and didn't give him a NTC). I love UFA season, simply because I know it's when you can reliably bank on being able to explain why 10 teams will be noncompetitive for the next 5-8 years.
The 90s were amazing for free agency. The Blues signed Scott Stevens, Brendan Shanahan, Dave Christian, Michel Goulet, Marty McSorley, Shayne Corson, Petr Nedved to offers sheets. They were about to do the same with Steve Duchense and Al MacInnis but worked out trades for them before the offer sheet was signed. This all took place in just a 5 year period from 1990-1995. Later on, Detroit was signing Hall of Fame Unrestricted Free Agents by the handful. Hull, Robitaille, Hasek, Modano, Chelios, Fetisov, Larionov. A couple of things have hurt the sport of hockey over the past 20-25 years. - goal scoring decreasing so drastically - A very low salary CAP, where star player movement hardly ever occurs. A franchise used to be able to rebuild/repair instantly if it so tried and desired. Today, can only be done through one avenue... rebuilding through years of high draft picks. Required every franchise to go through really dark periods... even the elite franchises from great markets like Detroit and the NY Rangers.
I don't think you can compare NBA to NHL free agency for a few reasons: 1) the hard cap makes it harder to build super teams through free agency. You would never see a Big 3 Miami Heat or Golden State situation in the NHL because you could not fit that many superstars on one roster. 2) hockey is an infinitely more team-oriented sport than basketball. One player usually won't make the difference between championship and missing the playoffs 3) superstar culture: NBA superstars are generally more concerned with glitz, glamour, bling and endorsements, which means they're incentivized to leave small markets for big markets when possible. Hockey players just don't have that personality. Free agency isn't broken, it's just different.
Superstar player movement is overrated. I hate rooting for the jersey and not the players; continuity is a valuable asset. NHL free agency is about right just how it is. I don't need more "excitement" from it. Just look at MLB, for the worst-case scenario. It's atrocious.
If it's not for you, that's perfectly alright. Personally, I just want more excitement and coverage for the league. It doesn't have to be to the extent of the NBA, but just a few more players exercising some power and personal preference couldn't hurt. Cue this crop of RFA's getting shorter-term deals, (Matthews, Aho).
Rogie Vachon and Bruce McNall needed this video back in 1990. Of course, at that time, there was no salary cap nor free agnecy like today but the LA Kings were ruined for about a decade until they got their draft picks and were able to develop their farm system.
I just wanna day something about Hayes. From other fans looking in, yes kevin Hayes was overpaid. But for our team he was completely worth the overpay. He is a huge reason why we are 1 point out of first place in the metro. He’s been great for us and i don’t regret giving him the 7 mil one bit
Don't think Goldy has a place on the Canucks anymore. He plays like he doesn't particularly care unless he has the puck and is in the offensive zone. And anyways, who does he knock off the Canucks' winger depth? Ferland, Boeser, Pearson and Miller are probably locks for the top six, and the bottom six still has Baertschi, Virtanen, Leivo, Roussel, Motte and Eriksson vying for four spots. Possibly MacEwan, too. I just don't see a spot for Goldy. He's defensively lazy, so putting him on that fourth checking line with Beagle would be a catastrophe and Baertschi and Virtanen are just better options on the third to provide a little depth scoring. Especially since both play hard. I say trade Goldy for whatever 3rd or 4th rounder you can get and move on. He's had plenty of opportunity in Vancouver. Maybe he straightens it out elsewhere but we just don't seem to have a spot for him.
Canucks have the cap space to sign Boeser. Hughes and Pettersson still have another two years on their ELCs. When their new contracts kick in, Edler, Sutter and Tanev will be off the books, and Roussel and Beagle will be on their final years of their contracts. I wouldn't call our situation dire.
The reasons why the NBA has more movement is because the players figured out that the teams won’t be loyal to you so why the hell should the players be. The other main reason is the start of true free agency being much sooner. If the NHL adjusts UFA years to start at 23 years old or a “years of service” system where 3 or 4 years of NHL experience grants you free agency, stars would move much more. But the NHL doesn’t want to do that because it wants to help all the broke teams compete and doesn’t understand that doing those things with a luxury tax system would actually give more money to the broke teams. The NHL really needs a new commissioner.
Free agency just requires some smart thinking. Find your bargains, if a unicorn type player is there then try for them, and don't be stupid. I do agree that NHL free agency just isn't as thrilling as they try to make it out to be. It just isn't that crazy. Key players rarely move. For a lot of reasons, but they don't move. So chasing supporting cast members for too much money will sink you. I agree with the video.
james neal is a good bet for edmonton, he gets an actual offseason to rest up and take a breath after two cup runs. a guy doesn't go from being a guy who can get you 25-30 goals at least to not getting into a lineup
The eriksson signing looked better than the Vrbata signing from a few years prior. Vrbata has 30 goals out of nowhere. Eriksson regressed to a bottom six forward in his first season in Vancouver. It’s a gamble. You can acquire value for free but you could also take on negative value, sometimes a massive negative value. Say what you will but lucic eriksson and James Neal but they all would’ve got either the same deal or close to it elsewhere
Free agency kills teams. Too many GM's overpay for players that tend not to "pan out". Now these teams are in a salary cap bind that can't get out of those ridiculous contracts. Drafting well is the key to winning. Building a team through the draft works wonders.

If the team we had the last two years couldn't do it, now that we have lost so many other important parts I can't see this team going any further than the first round. Stuck in that 'almost good enough but not quite bad enough to blow up the roster situation'. Now i understand how Toronto has gone 50 years without a cup. Let Liane go, build up a team with Conner as your star and start getting some new talent. Sucks but might be best in the long run.

The Donskoi contract is awful. He was a regular healthy scratch during the playoffs. He went like 37 games without a goal. Wouldn’t have given Him more then 2.5
I am still trying to understand the reason behind the Flyers giving Kevin Hayes, 7 years/50 million,who averages around 15 goals/40 points with career high of 25 goals. I get it if the only reason he agreed to be traded there in the trade and sign move, if Philly was the only team that would "overpay" him.
*It would be interesting to see some sort of comparison on the way the Blackhawks and the Kings have been managed over the past decade. Why? Because both teams have multiple cups around the same time, but the Blackhawks still look like they can be relevant while the Kings look like they're pretty fucked for the foreseeable future. For all Vancouver fans, I’m gonna tell you what you got from Myers. When we the jets went on the Stanley cup run, Myers was looking great. He was making the right play (sometimes) at the right time. I had faith in Myers, but then next season happened. And the jets absolutely disappeared after January. Myers fell back to same old shitty game. Just like trouba and tanev. For your overly priced Myers to work, your gonna need strong leadership, and a great defensive pairing. Without both, he’s useless Besides his, strong and physical presence. which will help, but he’s also extremely injury prone. I would love to see Myers grow into a fantastic player. But from where I’m looking, I don’t think it’s possible.
