The history of the NHL can be split into 6 distinct eras: The Before Time (1917-1942) Original 6 (1942-1967) Expansion Explosion (1967-1979) The Oilers and Islanders own your soul (1980-1990) Boring Shit (1990-2003) Bettman's Reign of Terror and Lockouts (2004-present) I'd argue we're getting into a 7th era, the "Refs Ruin Everything" era, but only time will tell if the 2019 playoffs were a one-off, or a sign of things to come
