Almost twenty years now and that picture of the old covered bridge hit home hard. My late wife, who was a gift from God, loved those things. Even now things like this remind me of her. No man ever lost so much so quickly. Thanks, Mustie, for showing this.

Pro hydraulic hose tips: Release the pressures by operating the functions with the engine off, next the hoses that are male, press them against a hard clean surface to release the pressure inside the hoses, this will make it a lot easier to connect.

Please sandblast and repaint the plow and snowblower. Btw its a checkball filter(also used in snowmobiles) not a screen and it is installed with clear plastic line (snowmobile line) doesnt take long at all to install or change with the right line. Speaking from experience, a snowblower is much better than a plow for snow. Throwing the snow away prevents blow in. Piles left by plows blow in almost right away. Id also clean off the rust on the end of pistons before you tear up the seals on hydralic cylinders. Btw parts diagrams help tons for figuring out how to mount things. Word of advise. Its a snow plow not a gravel or mud or dirt plow. You can blow the rear transmission if you try.

Hey Mustie, looks like the plough angle pivot inboard hose is fitted back to front. 90° end is on the tractor side of hose.
@TheGhungFu

Hey Mustie1, Just wanted to say thanks for inspiring me :) Yesterday I brought home an old no-name dirt bike that I bought for $40, today I got the carb all cleaned (Which is CRAZY for me, before I found your channel I was terrified of small parts like that) threw it back on, and it's running like a champ! Now I gotta do some exterior cosmetic work and it's good as new. Thanks for uploading these amazing, inspirational videos. I hope you never stop :)

JD has always made two lines of equipment. The really pricey "good stuff" (like this one) that's in the $8000-$10000 range, and the line just like all the other crap tractors out there made with light-weight junk and sold to unsuspecting folks at HD or Lowes. Doesn't last a bit longer than MTD...

You’ve probably never seen any of the 400 series tractors either then. My 425 has a water cooled Kawasaki V-twin, with power steering, diff lock, dual circuit hydraulics, optional Cat 1 3-point hitch, optional 540 PTO, and shaft driven mower deck. The 445 was the same, but came with EFI and a couple more HP. The big boy was the 455 with a Yanmar diesel. Basically they were what would be considered a sub-compact tractor today.

Put some durable foam, or a couple rubber bushings under that seat to smooth the ride and prevent problems later on. On that cylinder, it appears it should have been reversed end to end..think about it, it still expands or contracts no matter which end is where, and it looks like someone mounted it backwards, the 90' should be coming out the front instead of the back, and why a hose was to long as well. But it's coming along well, and w/that fancy paint job and all, may have gotten a couple new valves for it, rather than straightening out those old ones.

Great video as usual! A trick I always use for persuading rubber hoses that are being stubborn is have a cup of hot water, dip the end in and leave it to dwell for 20 seconds and it pops straight on it also holds better.

My Dad taught me a trick long ago. If you’re having trouble getting a fuel line to fit through a hole in a plastic tank or on a fitting, add a drop of dish washing soap to it. It’s as slick as oil, but will dry up where .as oil will not. Works great!

The filter is also a "clunk", that is, a heavy end to a flexible fuel line that will always move around to the lowest gas even when the tank is un-level. We use those all the time in model aviation. They call them clunks because that's literally the sound they make when you shake the tank. The fuel can be picked up even when the plane is flying inverted.

I just lost the nozzle from one of those pain in the keester fuel cans. You have to put down pressure on it for fuel to flow....slowly...then it popped off the edge and got lodged in the can. Ripped it off trying to remove it from the tank. Now the nozzle is somewhere in the bottom of the fuel tank. Tried in vain to fish it out. It can live there...

It is a privilege and an honor to be able to spend an hour or so watching and listening to you as you go about inspiring the rest of us to get our hands dirty once again. I was just up in your neck of the woods sort of. Made the annual pilgrimage to Lake George NY from NC (yeah I know you are a couple of states over, but not that far) a couple of weeks ago. When things wound down at night I would crank up the Gilligan generator and catch up on your exploits in the shop. Thanks for the therapy sessions designed for the mechanically inclined or maybe not so inclined. The decision process, the application and perseverance in completing each and every task of many is really the thing about viewing your work. I used to get a bit riled up when somethings wouldn't go together or come apart like they should have. I have since learned "to become one with the machine" and relax before breaking a part and having it cost me more than I was saving by doing my own work. There is also the personal satisfaction of having known you were able to fix "XYZ" yourself. Thank you for your efforts and time putting these videos together.

Even then it's not a complete fail, you still learn something from it.

Also restores the rubber's rubberiness and gives it a few months away from turning into a biscuit!

Late to the party on this series, but I'm loving it. My brother bought and started a landscape company when he was 16 with one of these, then eventually a 332, the 3 cylinder yanmar diesel version. He had the same plow, dug a foundation for a small barn with it on my family's property, going back and forth scraping the dirt out. The best built "garden tractor" ever in my opinion. Way over engineered yet simple. Thanks for the videos!

Do the cylinder ends go toward the blade rather than toward the tractor? Great video.

Home Depot has a set up like the flash light you are looking into the gas tank with except it has a camera as well. It's in the hardware department and not very expensive. It has a hand held unit with a screen you can look into gas tanks and behind walls and in plumbing pipes. I have thought many times how nice if you had one to look into the tanks and really see what they look like inside. Really enjoy all your videos and have learned a lot from you. Thanks for the education. If you lived in Texas you would hear the storm warnings often.
