Okay...let's see if I can contain my excitement here and avoid gushing...as a sewist who also loves junk journaling AND looking at getting into POD, this is truly exciting content! I mean, I have to push away from the computer now for a bit and BASK in this info. Yeah...THANKS so very much Crafty Stax!

These books were hard copy compilations of weekly or monthly periodicals, which is why there are over 1000 pages. I bought one from 1876

THANKS FOR THIS. I love vintage fashion; especially Art Deco and Art Nouveau. Have you seen the work on George Barbier (you'll find his stuff on Raw Pixel in the PD section). Another fantastic designer was Erte (his real name was Roman Tirtoff (RT - his name Erte is from the way the initals are pronounced). Just going to disappear down another rabbit hole. Thanks again.

Hi what they did back in the 1800’s with a lot of these magazines was you could buy a single issue which could be weekly or monthly ut they also bound them into hardcovers just like a book and they would do either 6 months, one full year and sometimes 2 years.. the paper lasts better from what I’ve seen. And most of the fashion ones had steel engravings, pull out patterns and hand colored plates that sometimes folded out. All beautiful. And they would put a tissue paper over the engravings but a lot of times it would leave an impression on the opposite page and that was absolutely gorgeous. I have a lot of the box’s even this name which I only have single copies of this one

Wow 🤩🤩🤩 this video was a random suggestion and now I see a great source of wondeful things -thank you!! 👍👍👍 Do I could use the images also here in Europe (because it's public domain for the US)??? Thank you so much for answering me 🧡 Victoria from lovely Lake Constance in Germany and new subbie
@craftystax
@craftystax 5 месяцев назад
Hello! Yes that is a good question - generally speaking, if the image is public domain in the U.S., it is usually 95 years old (or older). In Germany and most European Union countries, this protection lapses 70 years after the author's death or the death of the last surviving co-author. So it is possible that something could be in the public domain in the U.S. but not in another country. Usually, if it is pretty old, it is safe to use but it is a bit of the wild west when it comes to the copyright laws!

Another great video. Thank you so much! A quick production question here, if I may. How do you download these images to preserve the quality? Do you screen grab them? That would only give you a 72 dpi. I'm confused as to how to get the original file.
@craftystax
@craftystax 2 года назад
Yes I right-click the image and just save it as a JPG. Or hit "print screen" and then paste it into Paint (free app in Windows) and it should give a pretty good JPG. You could also run it through Inkscape as a color vector (but those have mixed results, not always perfect).

Another excellent video! Thank you. Are we able to use the images from the ads?
@craftystax
@craftystax Год назад
Hello! Yes the whole thing is public domain (so you can use and remix anything in there) - the ONLY exception would be if something is obviously trademarked. So if there is a Coca-Cola bottle in the advertisement, I would crop out the logo and just use the picture.

I have a problem with that The Delineator thing. When I click on a cover it opens up just that. An image of the front cover, that's it. I can not scroll through the book/magazine/catalogue... How do I get in?

It might be your web browser? Typically if I have issues with Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or MS Edge, I clear the cache and then also try another browser. Hopefully that helps?

Love these images - loads of ideas on how to use them! BUT i notice when I download them and put them into Affinity Designer that they are only 72dpi and when I change to 300dpi in Affinity the image seems to look worse not better!! I do KDP and they say images should be a minimum 300dpi - have you any suggestions? The 72dpi images I download look so crisp and changing them to 300dpi seems to make them more blurry on screen - will this be the same effect when they are printed? Should I risk leaving them at 72dpi for print publishing? Help!! :)

I have a question, Zen: Can I use an Art Deco / Art Nouveau image which is in the public domain STRAIGHT or do I have to alter it in some way?
@craftystax
@craftystax 2 года назад
Hey there - if you are selling it digitally "as is" on your own website, there's no problem. But if you are selling it "as is" on a marketplace like Etsy or Redbubble, you COULD run into an issue where the person who uploaded it as is could claim you were copying them (and thus you could wind up with a copyright strike). So I would recommend using these as a base for creating an original piece of art just to be safe.

Hello and thank you for this..... soooo I'm looking at it right now, and if it has a download, but no info on whether its non commercial, then its ok? not every book has info about the copyrights
@craftystax
@craftystax 3 года назад
Hey there - the book itself may (or may not) say it's copyrighted, but that is only at the time of publication. So these are all so old that the copyright has expired.

I have seen many pics of old mermaid things. I see lots of the same print being sold as digital kits on "famous" RU-vidrs. I say famous because I have less than 500 subs. I aspire to have more, only if they are into Junk Journals. But I'm wondering how the same print is all over the place being sold on Etsy. I once had an Etsy shop and bought a file of the grinch for a monogram on my sewing machine. I sold one on and only one t shirt on my shop. It was the grinch. Etsy made me take it down saying it was copywriter infringed. I gave up after that. I bought it on Etsy, yet I was reprimanded. makes no sense.

I want to sell digital images on Etsy,should the images be CC0 or should they be public domain? I couldn't completely separate the public domain from CC0.
@craftystax
@craftystax 3 года назад
There are different types of CC (Creative Commons). CC0 (zero) means public domain. CC0 and public domain are basically the same thing. creativecommons.org/share-your-work/public-domain/cc0/
