Today's Final Cut Pro tutorial will teach you a post production technique to get a film halation/pro mist filter effect, with no plug ins needed. Just by using the free built in effects in Final Cut Pro! This soft, dreamy, and cinematic look can help reduce some of the harsh edges around high contrast areas.
Halation is the soft blooming of the highlights around edges and something which occurs naturally while shooting on film stock. Since most of us use digital cameras, either we buy something similar to pro mist filters to help recreate this effect, or, we take steps in post similar to what I’m going to show you today. If you're looking to achieve the reddish bloom from highlights you see often in film stock, push the highlights of the top adjusted clip towards the red/orange hue.

IMPORTANT: It's been brought to my attention that I made a mistake in what view mode to select at the last step of adjusting your luma keyer. SWITCH BACK TO COMPOSITE, NOT ORIGINAL. My fault guys! Also, If you're looking to achieve a more reddish bloom from highlights you'll often see in film stock, push the highlights of the top adjusted clip towards the red/orange hue. Play around with it till you find a look you like.

Good idea to emulate a bloom-like effect like this. Just a little thing: Halation is something different than blooming which ist what a pro-mist or diffusion filter does. Halation is an effect that originates in the film strip itself. Chemical film consist of different layers on top of each other sensitive to different wavelengths. First blue, then green, then red - following the light as it travels through the lens. Light that has passed through all the color sensitive layers of the film strip is partially reflected back. Film manufacturers have added a anti halation coating to the back of the filmstrip to surpress this, but if the light is strong enough it bounces back off this layer regardless and exposes the red sensitive and to a lesser extent the green sensitive layer of the film again. This is visible as an orange-tinged halo where very bright areas meet dark areas, although it is present everywhere in frame, essentially warming the image a bit. What you are creating is blooming. It's related but not the same thing. It's light that is diverted from reaching the exact spot it should by slight imperfections in the optical path BEFORE it hits the film. A diffusion or Pro Mist filter enhances this effect deliberately - basically bleeding excess light from bright parts into dark parts of the image.

DO NOT go back to the original viewing option in the Luma Keyer. Set it to 'composite' Then it will leave only the highlights. Otherwise it will just blur all your footage.

BRUHH I hadn't thought of using the luma keyer. That's a way better method. I was literally just gaussian blurring the crap out of my top shot, and messing with curves to create the contrast and then using a screen blend mode. But this looks WAY cleaner. Nice tip!

the luma keyer keys out luma values (brightness areas) in your shot. Make sure you follow the steps in the video though

The opacity just turns the brightness down of the entire clip, and the entire clip is blurred. Not sure what I missed here!

Boy do I have a tip for you. Once you’ve made this effect on a clip, press command C with the clip selected. Then click the clips you’d like to have the effect and press Shift Command V. From there, click the effect, and press okay. The effect will be immediately copied to those clips.
