My brother's neighbor's dog figured out how to get in the enclosed chicken run. Killed every last chicken. Like someone said before, it could be a child next time. My thought was if the chickens aren't available, the dogs might go after the other animals, the goats, or the pigs. Hopefully your neighbors will find a solution for their animals!

A human, even a child. is not a prey animal to a dog just as a dog is not prey for a human. The animals listed are prey for humans and dogs.
@alittlerose1928
@alittlerose1928 Год назад
 @kathryn card Respectfully, any vicious animal will attack any other being around it(human or otherwise) if that animal has deemed their target non-threatening. Why do you think wolves only attack the sick, weak, or injured animal of the herd? It's the same for the dogs and the chickens, and it would be the same for any of the kids the dogs thought they could take, there's a real possibility they might have even attacked Johnathan or Ashley. A mad dog is a mad dog, is a mad dog. In other words, those dogs are obviously killers whether they were born or raised that way. Really, I think they should have insisted those dogs get put down. Once a dog has bit, they'll even turn on their owners. Anyway, taking the necessary steps to ensure the safety of themselves, their home, and their animals, no matter what that entails, is a crucial next step they need to take.
@RustyRefuge
@RustyRefuge Год назад
@@alittlerose1928 Dogs will be dogs and kill unprotected chickens unless trained or kept in a good fence. The love, loyalty protection and companionship a dog gives to a human makes them worth the effort. A chicken will fly, run and make noise and dogs treat them as they would a toy. This does not mean they are "mad" dogs. It does not mean they will attack humans. Police dogs are trained to attack on command but they never turn on their handlers. A dog who bites has been abused by humans at some time in their life . I hope you will get over your irrational fear and be able to experience the joy of dog ownership. Meanwhile stop giving out false unsubstantiated information.

This was a wise decision to add another layer of protection. Changing your ranging options is another good step, even though they are more constricting. I'm also sure that you are considering aerial attack protection but that has to be factored in with high winds. The next step is guardian animals - dogs are good for goats but not good for poultry. Donkeys can be trained to handle canine predators but they have specific needs that have to be addressed such as feed and waste. Also, consider extending your protection consideration to include your other animals. The pack attack concentrated on your most vulnerable animals. With them protected they will change their focus to your other animals. The question will be how are you going to handle it when the pack returns? They will - count on it.

You should get a llama for a guardian. 1. They are always watching out and securing the perimeter and if there is any threat they sound an alarm. They can actually kill coyotes. 2. You only get one and put it in with the goats and it will think it is part of their heard. They make great babysitters and are very attentive to the baby goats, let's them jump on their backs giving the momma goats a break to do her thing and relax a little. 3. They are low maintenance, you feed them the same thing you feed the goats. 4. You shear them once a year and their fleece is very soft and warm, just clean it, strand it, and then knit it. 5. And last but not least they are really cool, super adorable, friendly to their owners but cautious of strangers and will alarm you if a stranger comes on your property, and they are just so much fun and fun to watch.

I am heartsick over having that happen to your flock. I blame the dogs owners, as dogs in a pack have the instinct to chase & kill. You have to teach a dog you get not to, after all it's instinct. That was the hardest lesson for me as a child when my dog would get my hamsters! I love that you were able to put them in the chicken garden easily. So what if the final coat isn't done. You and your chickens get to enjoy all the hard work you put into it. Like everything else on the never ending list, it will get done.🐓🥚🐔

I'm sorry that sucks. I hate the idea of needing to eliminate a dog to protect animals. I had a simialar encounter with my bernedoodle and a neighbors loose rottweiler this week. Fortunately everyone lived.

6 out of 26 isn't too bad.....but i het it. I've read some other comments .. it's true what if it were children? Anyway... You both are very smart and know what to do... I don't have all that you have, but watching you is like reading a book without reading lol. Getting your hands dirty and doing the things you do excite me and keeps me doing what I do. Living❤

Oh how frustrating to have such a loss because of another's irresponsibility. BUT it's so cool to see the Chicken Garden being used for it's intended purpose. I'm sorry it was in an emergency situation though. See you next time. Take care of yourselves and all of the homestead.

I’m surprised you haven’t lost them to hawks, vultures, owls, coyotes. That was our issues. I added 4ft chicken wire above our 4ft pipe fence. Just braced it with old limbs 4 to 6 long wired it to stay in place. Wind goes right through & chickens don’t fly out. Chicken coop is an old cotton wagon with a screen door. From the exterior fence to the coop I hung string down with a small branch tied to the bottom. They swing in the breeze & large birds stay clear due to their wing span. Chickens do get to come out of this area often to roam the property for snacks, but are always fed in the coop. Yes neighbors dogs have also been a problem. Haven’t had any issues since I added the extra chicken wire.

Well done! One thing though, I think dogs could still get inside the inner ring where your chickens are by walking the lower walls to the roof and jumping inside (predators are very determined and don't have any distractions). I think it might be prudent to add a door to the inner coop/roost area where they sleep at night.

After having free range chickens for 13 years, something has learned about our flock and I've lost half my chickens and all my ducks! I'm raising more but I'll have to build a better shelter inside the barn to lock the chickens in at night. It might be eagles. I'll have to put shelters up all over for them to run to. I have bushes and cars they hide under. I'm getting guineas again too as alert birds. So sorry to hear about your chickens getting killed by the neighbor's dogs. I've had a dog come to chase my chickens a couple of times. I love that tool pack system! I like the 45 degree roosts. I hope you make something like that. Yes, you made what I was thinking! My girl's love their ladder roost! Nice door! Pine shaving bedding is a good idea. You can make compost. Chicken parade! It was fun to see the goats "happy" that the sun was going down! You're not worried the dogs could figure out the handle? Nice job Longneckers!

So sorry this happened. My past life experience tells me once dogs kill livestock (yes, chickens are livestock) they don't stop. The goats are at risk too. Check the laws in AZ as in CA the dog owner is responsible for 3x the cost of damages.

Lol, I heard the little roo crowing! I'm so sorry about the attack! My daughter lost over 70 of her 120 heritage chickens breeding pairs, to a pack of wild dogs here in Augusta, Georgia a few years back. It was a blood bath! They broke into the cages while the family was away for the day, what a nightmare! But they've built back sjnce. You have to just move on.

You need to get yourselves a couple of guard Llamas. I grew up on a horse ranch and we always had guard Llamas in with our young horses to keep the neighbors dogs out of the fields. These are the breeds of Llamas that are breed for guarding stock, the Great Pyrenees, Komondors, Akbash

Nice Chicken garden. It’s always a challenge in every way to protect our homestead pets. Last year we were hit with Hurricane Ian and a never imaginable exceeded every projection x4 water level and at 3 am I’m wading thru waist deep water to save my chickens. Weather is changing and it’s good to protect our critters on this scale of how you folks designed that - awesome

So sad that neighbors are not the helpful, kind people that I grew up with in the farming community. Nowadays if you get one good neighbor you are VERY lucky!! Things have certainly changed. My parents were good friends with all of the neighbors they exchanged veggies for milk and eggs and so many other things... We all pitched in to help with the harvest of Walnuts, Hazelnuts, Strawberries, Peaches, Apples, Plums, Cherries, and of course Green beans and cucumbers! These days most of the farms in that area have Big fancy homes with gates! Very sad!

I am so sorry you are dealing with negligent neighbors that sadly own dangerous dogs. A guardian dog/donkey would be no match for a pack of predator dogs. I would be fearful that your guardian dog/donkey would be injured or killed by that pack of predators. Keep your chins up. Y’all have a great attitude and wonderful family. Sending love across the ocean to y’all! (Former GA Gal in Okinawa, Japan)
