Freestyle - Reach Full Extension

Learning to reach your goals, starts with learning to reach in the pool.
Why do it:
Reaching full extension in freestyle is a necessary foundation for swimmers at every level. Learning to create a slippery line to glide through the water, which requires balance, and a sense of flying, will allow you the ability to make decisions later on efficiency or speed.
How to do it:
1 - Swim slow, smooth freestyle, focusing the attention on extending the fingers as far out front as possible.
2 - Focus ONLY on extending the hand as far forward as possible, and not on the pull, finish, or recovery of the stroke.
3 - Feel what part of the hand has the most pressure on it. It should be the relaxed fingers out front, not the palm.
How to do it really well (the fine points):
If you're true to the goal of extension, other parts of your stroke will fall into line. By trying to push the hand forward with a bit of intensity, you'll create a better, more direct pull. Focusing on the pull can lead you to shorten the extension, and start you down a path of instinctual reaction to moving through the water.
When the focus is only on extension, there are other aspects of the stroke that start to come together. Better balance will help you drive the hand forward in a more direct line. You'll also connect the arm to the body rotation, which will ultimately give you a more powerful pull.
Youthful exuberance leads swimmers to focus on fast turnover and the pull. Age and wisdom know that it's better to start with the understanding of a full stroke as early in the learning process as possible, then make adjustments as the swimmer grows older.

I just figured this out today, then later searched this topic out. I was working hard on my 100 meter intervals and just paddling faster wasn't increasing my time, just tiring me out by the end. I realized that if i could move more water with each pull i can cover more yardage with each stroke, tried reaching further and found much more pull there! really worked my muscles but kept my pace pretty efficient all the way through and i wasn't crashing the water trying to go faster, met my current best lap time and wasn't killing myself. This is going to be awesome as I explore this and develop it. Much more efficient and a much stronger stroke.

Very nice! I do try to do this because a full extension of the body is so elegant! I will try even harder now. 😊😊

Been stagnant on developing speed for a number of months, new to freestyle old to a very efficient breaststroke. Watching this and experimenting with it has taken over 30secs of a 250meter set in a single session and dropped my strokes per length by two to three average. Looking forward to the morning to experiment with it a bit more. Really helpful video and narration. Gary 52 years

totally agree with what you say in here!!! To me focus in reaching full extensión is what mades me to do a good body rotation, to maintain my body in good position, and to do a full movement of the hand inside the wáter... also the high elbow comes by itself. If I focus on another kind of thing, that doesn´t happen :)

That's a neat video. Especially the narration is as smooth as a seasoned swimmers breathing.

I love the slow motion starting from 0.57 (put it slower at 0.5). It allows me to analyze this excellent swimmer strokes. Aside from feeling of flying (balance) I found this swim thought working for me. (I play golf and they always talk about swing thoughts so I try also to figure out what swim thoughts will work for me.) As I kick, I imagine it powering the full extension of the opposite fingers as the trunk rotates 45 degrees. There is an extra flutter kick to take advantage of the streamline of the glide, before the flutter kick to power the reaching of the opposite fingers. As I reach/extend the fingers, with the opposite hand, I imagine crawling on the mud under barb wires, to facilitate the EVF. I tried different swim thoughts to facilitate the EVF but this "crawling" thought works for me. I can now cover 25 yards with 8 strokes, occasionally just with gliding I covered it with 7 strokes. I focus more on slow efficiency than speed.

I am watching many swimming tutorials, videos of various ways and advices, but this is one of the best here on youtube (along with good explanation below video, also). Very accurate, easy to understand. To start with a proper techique, and later to make adjustments, sense of "flying" in the water,to be conscious about what you doing, reaching full extension... Just that little suggestion about flying made me "force" myself to think (and ,I hope, act) in that manner, therefore to be more confident in the water. Its not like in the gym, although it can be similar - there could be "distraction" from others, from possibly present girls around the pool, maybe you want to "show" yourself and be good swimmer just like that or whatever, but this stuff grounds you in a good way, make you more self-conscious,persistent,more confident in yourself, regardless of other (maybe good or better) swimmers around. I will continue to watch and learn from your videos, they are among my favorites...:)

Great - thanks! I did some coaching and competitive swimming in my twenties but still found this video useful, especially learning your point about the extended fingers of the hand (not the palm) taking some or most of the force. Thanks for sharing this. :-)

Funny I just had this talk with a coach, he's told me my turn over needed to be quicker and I found out my slow turn over was due to the full extension for a fuller catch and was taught from the beginning "learn to be smooth - smooth is fast". Upon telling him this he said in a sprinting situation you'd rather enter and pull right away, this is more appropriate for distance swimming.

The finger issue is a fact of physics and chemistry. Fingers slightly apart catches more water...counter intuitive but true. All high level swimmers have the same finger gap.

+Mario Webb You should talk to your physics teacher about this before you talk to your PE teacher. The surface area your PE is talking about, is infinitesimal. Plus, the way it interacts with the rest of the mechanism that is the entire body, takes away from the focus on this exercise.
