There is no doubt that there will need to be several balance patches to get everything just right....if that's even possible. The original StarCraft had the best game balance of any RTS every made. It is a lot easier to balance three factions. Balancing eight is quite a chore. I have been playing for about a week now, and I think they have done a pretty good job overall, for as new as the game is. Each civ has an advantage depending on what age your at....some in Feudal, some in Castle, some in Imperial. The more civilizations a game has, the more homogenous the factions have to be in order to keep balance, and diversity of play styles. I definitely think that both artillery and ships need a balance pass, as there is no balance on water maps. The true genius of StarCraft was that there was always a counter to what your opponent was doing. There was no single unit that was overpowered. The most expensive units in the game could be taken down by cheap units, if you had the right ones built. There is nothing worse than end game units that really have no counter, and you just roll the map with.

School of cavalry is more for early rush and map domination. I think the market is always better in a team fight.

Judging by how people often do it, the latter. Crossbows and gunpowder shread them pretty efectively.

Spearmen and crossbows! Building walls too because it slows the Knights down, also funnels them into a kill box

I always build walls when I see my opponent is going cavalry. Even palisades are effective in funneling calvary early to mid game.
