French parenting techniques 

I babysitted for a french woman and she did a lot of these things. I was truly inspired

I worked at a French school in NYC. The kids whose parents were French were better behaved than the others. You tell them to move, they move. You tell them "that's enough let someone else have a turn" and they do it. I suspect that by teaching baking to kids, you teach them patience.

Basic rules for French parenting: 1/ a meal is a meal, you eat like your parents. There is a single meal for the whole family. 2/ You must try everything but you're allowed not to like some things. You have to test at least 3 times. 3/ For a baby at night, wait at least 30 seconds before taking him in your arms to see if the baby is just moving and will fall asleep again or not 4/ there is NO word in French for "snacking". Children take a "gouter" at 4 PM and ALL families in the whole country do the same thing at the same time.

I am very impressed with french kids. When I go to MacDonalds I know within 3 minutes if there is a english kid in the place

They make people who get in line really well. We are innovative because we allow individuality.

He hit the nail on the head about modern American parents overindulging or not setting higher expectations, like they used to old school. That’s why we have so many young adults that can’t even handle it when someone has a different opinion. They think the world revolves around them.

I grew up free range, but with responsibility within the family. Kids had to fit in the family and community. That was in the 50's when most children were not the centre of the world.

Ha-ha! Now I understand)) My daughter was the only one in the shop having her snack while I did shopping)) and we live in France)) but now with lockdown the shops here close at 7 pm, she was hungry, we were there when she usually has her dinner.

Having worked with French kids I find that they are better behaved and more polite than most British kids.Basically,these rules were the norm when I was a kid.Sad to say,it's my generation of parents who have let things slide!

And this is s book.? What about emotional maturity of parents?

There's a lot of sweeping generalisations of parents from France.

Is anyone else completely annoyed by his CONSTANT INTERRUPTIONS!?!?!

I came for the easy cake recipe and left empty handed. I am curious to see a real French cake recipe from average people not a fancy professional recipe from a cook book.

Do French kids take naps?

I'm sorry, are you guys talking about French kids, rich kids going to private schools, or regular french kids going to regular public schools? Btw, I thought the French were rude. So we start nice and we end up becoming the opposite? Il faudrait savoir.....

In short, treat the kids with respect. They are not helpless fools. You must obtain their consent to guide them. All authority comes from the consent of those over whom that authority is exercised. Otherwise, it is coercion and slavery.

For God's sake, man, at least pronounce "bébé" correctly, it's not that hard.

You let your kids take you out of surgery??? Are you nuts? Both of my parents were GPs/Surgeons. I knew at an early age that if they were at the hospital seeing patients or operating. NOTHING and I MEAN NOTHING, would justify my calling to talk to them. And yes, they were children of immigrants.

Why are Americans so interested in what we do in France? We live like everybody else!

The first thing I observed about French parenting when I lived in France is that most French adults do not do it, because they do not have children. Thus, France is is suffering a population decline. Certainly not at steep as some European nations, but it is real nonetheless. Only recent immigrant populations are replacing themselves.
