Friction Shifters: 6 Speed to 10 Speed With Old Derailleur

Switching from Index to Friction shifting allows you to change gears without limits, today I’m going to upgrade the drivetrain of this road bike, from 6 speed to 10 speed, without changing the derailleur.
Indexed shifting has click stops, each shift moves the derailleur with the same amount of spacing.
Friction shifting doesn’t have any click stops or indexing, the shifter moves linearly and it’s compatible with any amount of gears. The shifting can be accurate when you get used to it.
(Other benefit to friction is you can shift through the entire range of gears in one shot.)
7-Speed cassette:
The 6 speed and 7 speed have different sprocket spacing, therefore you cannot use the indexed shifter with the 7 speed cassette.
By putting a 7 speed cassette, you need to set the limit screw to allow the derailleur to shift to the lowest gear, make sure it doesn’t shift into the spokes.
10-Speed cassette:
For the 10-speed cassette, the limit screws have to be readjusted but most importantly, the chain is too wide and therefore you need to change it with a 10-speed chain.
Other than that, the shifting can be precisely with a little more practice.

Thanks, this is the exact video I searched RU-vid to find. I have a vintage 6-speed Bianchi that had the wrong wheels on it and I bought a set of wheels with a 10-speed cassette for it.

I am planning on doing the same with a micro shift m26 that takes 7,8,9 paired with sunrace friction shifter that way when I upgrade the bike to 8 speed I can use the same Rd and shifters along with adding links to existing chain When I upgrade it to 9 speed the only thing I will be changing will be the rear cassette and chain. Very cost effective

Hi! This was quite an interesting video. Do you have a video replacing a 6speed freewheel with an 8 speed frewheel? Thanks!

Did you increase the space of the rear dropout spacing to fit the wheel?

Amazing! I am planning on doing such a conversion myself. Where can i find those downtube shifters?

Check ebay and look up friction shifters.

I am trying to get friction shifting working with a 10 speed cassette. The bike was eight speed index downtube shifting. The original 8 speed Shimano shifters were index only. I had some Simplex friction shifters. With a ten speed chain , 10 speed road cassette and the original light action 8 speed derailleur I can only use 9 of the 10 cogs the simplex does not pull enough cable to get all 10. What am I doing wrong? It is not the shift limit screws as I can tug the cable and see the limit screw settings are not the restricting factor.

Maybe the gear cable is too slack. I change the 9 speeds on my 9 speed cassette with no problem, I don't see why 10 wouldn't work. The width of the cassette is about the same, I think, so there shouldn't be a problem with insufficient cable pull.

Do think this will also work with a 12 speed cassette? I don't see a reason why it can't

Yes, it should work.

We have same groupset, can I also use a 10 speed (11-32) cogs that isn't a cassette type?
@DanyoSports
@DanyoSports 2 года назад
No, you have to change the wheel/hub to put a cassette on it.

The maximum number of gears on a freewheel is 8. Many people will tell you that 7 is the practical limit as 8 is considered to leave too much axle left unsupported and liable to bending.

Hi from Azores, Portugal. I bought recently a lousy Helliot road bike, wich comes from the factory with mtb shifters on the top of the handlebar, awful. Since the bike has 3x8 speed and I want to upgrade to 3x10 later, it would not make sense to buy dual control levers now. I decided to change to downtube shifters - from scratch, because the frame had no support for them. I had to apply a special screw for that purpose. And thanks to your video, now I know that these shifters work well on 10 speed and I ordered them from eBay by 17 €, they didn't arrive yet but after installing them I'll tell you how it works.

@@DanyoSports Do you think it would be possible to add an 11th speed ? With those shifters ?
@CarlosSilva-ti5ib
@CarlosSilva-ti5ib Год назад
OK, looking to the shifter at 3:45 I realize there is enough cable-pull to at least an 11th gear.

@@DanyoSports UPDATE I Just finished today the instalation of an 11 speed transmission, using the ""monster" RD Shimano M8000. I didn't have the time to test it outside, but I just realized that, to use the larger cog (40) I have to pull the shifter all the way back, to a 180º possition, starting from the smaller cog. It's really unaesthetic and not pratic. I will try to solve this perhaps apllying a brake travel agent, hide somewhere, or maybe I just have to buy a Shimano 11 gear dowtube shifters. The 3rd option is to ask a friend of mine, who is a turner, to adapt a larger ring on the Suntour Accushift in order to gain more cable pull.

I don't see any difference between the index and friction shifters. Perhaps you can explain it in a different manner.
@stormshaman
@stormshaman 10 месяцев назад
In indexed mode, you can hear the shifter click to the next stop, and then you hear the KA-THUNK of the chain shifting to the next cog. In friction, there are no stops for the shifter to click to, so it moves smoothly and you only hear the noise of the chain shifting.
