As a grown man, this is one of my favorite movies. Came out the year I was born. I remember watching it for the first time on TV because my mom was watching it. It's just a great movie overall, and I always choke up when Ruth dies while Idgy tells her the familiar tall tale, and Sipsey hugging her and saying all the right things

At the wedding scene, mama Threadgoode says “Imogene Louise Threadgood, this is your mama”. Idgie is short for Imogene. The book is a much larger story. A really good story about southern life in the depression. There’s much more about Big George’s family that I wish they could have told in the movie but they focused on Idgie and Ruth’s and Ninny and Evelyn’s story.

And Ruth said: "Whither thou goest, I will go. Where thou lodgest, I will lodge. Thy people shall be my people." - this was the Bible verse Ruth send Idgie telling her she would be her partner in life if she came to get her. The lesbian aspects are often very subtle to those not LGB+, but I recognized it immediately being lesbian myself. The book goes much more into this aspect of their relationship. Yes, they _were_ friends for life. And soulmates.

When Ruth and Idgie are sitting on the riverbank, and Ruth says she's getting married "to the man I'm supposed to marry,"....the look on Idgie's face says it all. She refused to go to the wedding. That scene where Idgie comes up on Ruth's porch with the pie.....is pure love. I saw an elderly lady watch this film, and when Idgie walked up on that porch, she said "Idgie is in love with Ruth." It doesn't take a psychiatrist to figure it out

It's nice that viewers are no longer triggered by the thought that they are in a lesbian relationship. Back in the day, straight women were screaming from the rafters that they were just friends and they would not entertain any other option. Which was weird considering Fannie Flagg, and sad.

My mother, who passed recently, was the one to introduce me to this movies! It's been one of my favorites ever since! The actress who played Ruth is Mary-Louise Parker. It you've checked out the show "Weeds", she's the lead on that show. Jessica Tandy, who played Ninny, had previously won the Oscar for Best Actress in 89 for "Driving Miss Daisy". This was the very next movie that she did. The same goes for Kathy Bates, who had just won Best Actress for "Misery". They kept offering her "Misery" type roles until the "Fried Green Tomatoes" script got to her. A lot of people think that Ninny is Idgie, but she really isn't. Even in the book, Idgie is alive and Buddy Jr. is with her.

I don't think Ninny and Idgie are the same person. In the book, where she is featured in the flashback stories, definitely not, and I don't believe she is in the movie either, although a lot of people do. In the movie: Ninny Threadgoode was married to Idgie's older brother, Cleo. "Mrs. Cleo Threadgoode. . . . I was practically adopted by the Threadgoode family. I married her brother, Cleo." She tells Evelyn this when she meets her for the first time. Ninnie says in voiceover narration that she had always had a crush on Buddy. Idgie was attached to her brother, but not like that. Ninnie says she was never brave like Idgie and Ruth. Ninnie says Sipsie told her years later about what really happened to Frank, which Idgie would already have known in detail. Those are things in the movie that strongly suggest they are different people. Also, just my opinion: Idgie was raising Buddy and Ruth was the love of her life. I don't see her marrying a man and having children (or child), which Ninnie tells Evelyn she has done. Of course, she could have been assaulted and told Evelyn a lot of lies, including a crush on her own brother and a marriage to another fictitious brother of Idgie. Are those the lies she would tell, though, even if she wanted to pretend, in telling the stories, that she was not Idgie? I don't necessarily think everything we see in the flashbacks is what is told to Evelyn. She may give her the broad outlines of what she knew at the time or was told later (as she does with what Sipsie told her) but we are shown what actually occurred. That's how I have to take a lot of flashbacks, for various reasons.

My mother passed away the year of her 80th birthday. It's been about 6 years now. I remember my mother saying something similar to me the last time we spoke, that morning. I'm at the jumping off place and I'm not scared one bit. My mother told me that she wasn't afraid to die in the sense that someone my age is. Not seeing a future is not depression or scary when you realize that there is so much good in your life to reflect on.

This is why this movie was a hit (I saw it in the theater when it premiered). It's about love, life and loss....even Buddy's death. My girlfriend said "Why did they put that in the movie?" Well.....accidents kill people every day. Movies that reflect reality always hit a nerve with folks

So the first time I saw this, I was in my AP English class sophomore yr and it was the last week of the school yr. Fastfoward to about a yr ago, I watched it for the first time with my wife. It's funny how I didn't understand what was happening as a rebellious teenager, and watching it as an adult, I get it haha. As usual, it was fun to watch y'all react to hidden gems such as these. Love and peace to y'all!

This is one of my all time favorite movies. It introduced me to the concept of a chosen family & that you can find your own way of life without it being a bad thing. It also was the first movie I watched that showed two women living together (yes, they were a couple - it's more obvious in the book) & it not being an issue for anyone. It holds a very special place in my heart.

Another fave of mine, classic. Buddy Jr only lost his arm so they had a funeral for his arm .. the headstone read "here lies Buddy's arm". This was filmed in my home state of Georgia in the city of Juliette. Altho its set in the 20's of Alabama. Whistle Stop Cafe is still there in operation selling honey & fried green tomatoes. Not sure about that sauce tho😉😊 Great reactions & glad y'all enjoyed it. 👍🏼

Her name was Idgie which was short for Imogene. Even though the movie seems to hint that Ninny was Idgie at the end, she wasn't. In the beginning she even said she married one of Idgie's brothers Cleo and later said she had a son Albert. This movie was based novel and, in the book, Ninny and Idgie are definitely different people.

I think, though, that since the movie suggests it so strongly then it's perfectly fine to interpret it that way --- it's how I always understood it to be.

I'm really glad you reacted to this movie. It along with The Shawshank Redemption which you already reacted to, and one other are probably my favorites. If you enjoyed Fried Green Tomatoes I highly recommend you watch "Stand by Me," a completely different scenario, but another great story told in flashbacks, with suspense and humor, that really leaves you with the feels when it ends. I guarantee you will love it

50:27 The book makes it clear Ninny is not Idgie, the movie kind of makes it clear in that she talks very matter-of-factly about being married to Idgie's brother, Cleo and having a mentally disabled son with him who only survived till he was 30, but the movie also does make the matter gray enough to leave that window open for interpretation by the viewer.

My kids grew up with me watching this movie a million times over. Several years back they had fried green tomatoes at the state fair. Our rule at the fair is that we share everything, and whoever likes it best can have what's left. There were 6 tomatoes between 6 people. All of us tried one or two bites, basically consuming 1/2 of one tomato slice. My youngest LOVED them, and for the 1st time in his life got almost the entire order. That was about a decade ago, and he still orders them anytime he sees them on the menu. He's in college now, and recently met someone who knows how to make them. They've promised to teach him how to do it. And in return he has agreed to teach them how to make one of his specialties, but they haven't decided which one. 💜

This was filmed in Julliette, GA. The dilapidated town really existed and they filmed all of the "modern" scenes first. Then they restored the town and filmed all the "flashback" scenes. It still stands today and is a bit of a tourist attraction with all sorts of shops, etc. Yes, you can even buy fried green tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe.
