I'm having the rust issue, going to attempt this repair shortly. However, my issue isn't the ice maker as it's not hooked up to water. My fridge keeps warming up on hot days and ice forms over the rust at the back. Will just cutting out the soggy foam and replacing solve this issue?

Couple of comments and compliments Ben (I'm from Montreal). First off, all RU-vidrs should learn from you (Master Class), this is how you make a video, very detailed, stopping at times to show things, or adding red arrows to highlight things. The key for this repair is definitely that newly designed ice box with new improved gasket. Had called a repair guy and he was saying sell the fridge and get a new one, ice maker and insulation was done. Installed the new ice box last night and seems to be making ice now (will see for how long). Figured this effort on your part was worth at least a couple beers, so sent you a small donation to cover those beers. Thank you sir, am following your channel for more repair advise, great channel !!

If you're having trouble with the water inlet freezing over pull the water inlet tube as he shows towards the end of the video and check it for hard water scaling inside the tube. I had a persistent issue with the inlet freezing over on this style ice maker and tried all the usual suspects, nothing worked long term. For some reason a small amount of water left in the inlet during the ice making cycle was freezing then building on itself until it completely blocked the tube resulting in no ice. After thawing the inlet and trying numerous other fixes over several months I finally found a single reference to hard water scale causing this deep in the bowels of the internet. I pulled the tube and sure enough there was some scale visible inside it. I descaled it with some white vinegar for a few minutes, re-installed it and haven't had a problem since. Who would have thought that a little bit of mineral deposits would cause that. You could of course replace it with a new tube as well but this cost me nothing and was done in about 10 minutes.

I struggled with the water outlet freezing up every week. If I set the ice cube size to maximum, it would freeze up only about once a month. I dealt with that for about 18 months before I finally thought of an idea. I got a piece of electrical wire, the stuff used inside the walls of your house, 12 gauge solid copper and stripped it down to a single wire about 12 inches long. I fed that wire through the water outlet until it was a little bit recessed in the hole. In theory, this copper will absorb heat from the outside case and deliver that heat to the water outlet, preventing it from freezing. And three years later, I still haven't had a frozen outlet! It looks like they took my idea for the new water tubing you installed... it was wrapped in aluminum foil (unless you added that) so it too will absorb heat from the environment and keep the outlet perhaps above freezing.

Just ordered the kit from your page. I figure it was the least I could do for you putting this video out. I was attempting a DIY fix that would not have worked now knowing that the foam is water-logged. Peeled the metal back and sure enough, soaked. One thing to mention while cutting the metal -- the capillary high-pressure side of that coil takes off towards the left of the fridge. If you get too far over to the left, the line is only about 1/8" away from the metal. I have no idea how I missed it but I did. I would recommend starting on the far right and only working left as far as you need to. I would probably use tin snips instead of a rotary tool for doing this.

I sell appliances, and it's crazy how popular french door bottom freezer fridges are. They are *the* suburban mom *thing* to have that lets them know they've made it in life. What's strange is that these same customers hate chest freezers and *must* have upright freezers despite the many drawbacks of upright freezers, but they love having a fridge with a built-in chest freezer. They also *must* have water and ice available on the door of their new french door bottom freezer fridge. I like to remind them that, with the freezer on the bottom, how does the ice freeze when the icemaker is in the cabinet that is *above freezing*? The answer is, of course, "not as reliably as a side by side"... Maybe 1 in 10 will consider a (in my opinion) much more reliable side by side fridge.

Want a good story? When I was at Encompass Day, the head tech from HiSense US division was there. Started talking failure rates and ice makers. He said that Bosch commissioned a survey a few years back that HiSense took part in as well. Do you know what the ice maker usage rate is? US+CAN is larger than the GLOBAL DEMAND for icemakers for hisense. They sell in 206 nations. The US + Canada sells more icemakers than the other 204 combined. THATS how crazy we are for ice.

@@bensappliancesandjunk That's WILD... There's something quintessentially American about having access to fleeting moments of low entropy. Whether it's poorly insulated cheaply built houses with massive, powerful, grid-punishing multi-ton air conditioners, huge appliances that are somehow both ancient in design but also built as flimsily as possible (looking at you, Whirlpool VMW!) in such a way as to cost people thousands of dollars in excessive energy usage... It all comes down to *feeling* like we're in control of our lives and have *freedom*. We have the *freedom* to want the top to be sorta cold and the bottom to be freezing, but also a tiny box inside the sorta cold box should also be freezing. We have the *freedom* to spin our clothes at 650 rpm and pay twice as much to dry them - and don't suggest hanging to dry while I special order my customers matching dryer that just died, suggesting people hang their clothes to dry for a week, because obviously Americans do like 900 pounds of laundry a week and that is basically like starting a fist fight I've noticed... "I don't have time for that!" "I'm not some housewife! I have freedom!"??? It's bizarre.

if this works for a couple days then freezes again, test the heating element for ohms, if OL then the heating element is bad and needs replacement. And check the temp sensor for continuity, at freezing and at room temp, it is a simple close/open switch.

Why did you replace the water line ,did it cause a problem ???

It was included in the kit, and contained a better more robust gasket so the line doesn't freeze up.

What’s cause of the ‘air gap’? -improper Installation at factory? -Part defect? -Design defect? -Homeowner misuse of frig? -normal wear and tear? After it’s repaired…will the defect reoccur? If so…what will cause the reoccurrence?

Overtime things just generally degrade and it's the same way with the Samsung's. Re sealing solves it and they have new parts to seal it better

Should, yes, between the sealant kit + re-sealing back w/ insulation

No, rust is like cancer it will continue to eat away. I cut a 9x17 hole in mine 6yrs ago and patched it with aluminum plate. Put clear caulking around the edge, place the plate over the hole and pop rivet the plate on. Some rust came back below the plate and I put rust blocking paint o dr that portion. So far it has stopped. It’s 10yrs old this year.

How ironic, I was just looking up your videos to see what subject matter you had, I owned a Frigidaire gallery from 2013 to just last month, over the past 3-4 years I had issues with the icemaker, one repair guy came and wanted to install new icemaker, Frigidaire guy came and told me it’s a known issue not repairable since the back of the refrigerator had the rusting, but far worse than your video, so I was just going to do without ice until I wanted a new refrigerator, but after the repair guy unplugged the refrigerator the ice maker must have defrost like you can happen, after about 1-2 years the problem occurred again, so now I knew I could just unhook to defrost because I not know your method to defrost. Unfortunately after next few years the refrigerator was not holding its temperature, fluctuating up and down so I just replaced the Frigidaire just last month, I got 10 years out of it. On to a LG, I see your LG reviews are not very good but saw this after my purchase. There should be some type of class action on Frigidaire since my issue was very common with their units

Does this kit work with a Samsung model RF28HMEDBSR/AA? Do you know the way to force defrost?
@bensappliancesandjunk
@bensappliancesandjunk Год назад
No, please inspect the parts as shown in the video. They are wildly different. You'd want to buy the icemaker repair kit my shop sells for that model which includes a drain tube/heater combo, drain clips, and the SIL-4500 mentioned at the very end of the video. The air handler system is molded into a Samsung, and there's less of an air gap. Link: bens-appliances.com/products/samsung-icemaker-leak-moisture-kit

I was wondering what type of tool bag / box you take into a home? I have had several bag styles and I’m not a fan of them. By the way, I find these Frigidaire ice maker assemblies, pathetic. Very expensive repair to the customer. I was listening to a news snippet a few months ago where Electrolux had lost a huge amount of money on quarterly sales, gee I wonder why?

Ok, so everything on this video has been done and I went through and did the diagnostics for the icemaker that's in your other video and everything passed. But it still will not work automatically. It will fill the tray. It will dump the tray. And the sensor arm goes up and down as it should. I've unplugged the fridge for 10 minutes a couple of times. Do you have anymore ideas?

What's the ice housing temperature?
@hoitlygtlio

@hoitlygtlio
@hoitlygtlio Год назад
Yes, but taking the temp with a temp gun it's 15 degrees but the fridge thinks it's warmer either 20 or 28 degrees inside the ice maker. Would that point to a thermostat? It looks like there is a thermostat at the top of the coil but that there may be one also under the ice tray. Am I correct about those both being a temperature probe?

Good and helpful video but if you have the finances, go ahead and chunk this piece of trash appliance and buy a new one. Save yourself a lot of headache. Over the years I’ve fixed more appliances than I can remember. I’ve also been a small engine mechanic for over 20 years. Every way I tried to wangle the wires from the auger motor I could only get about 1 inch clearance. The wire bundle that goes to the icemaker, however had about an extra foot of wire. The people that designed and were responsible for building these products were brain dead.
