Frisco 1522 Freight Extras

After repairs in April 2001 the 1522 ran from St. Louis to Newburg, MO & return pulling freight. The opening shot is near St. Claire. The other 2 shots are following Galesburg Railroad Days in 1995 as the 1522 heads home with a CB&Q 5 chime whistle. The 1st two shots display why this engine was called "the loudest operating steam locomotive in the world". Crank up the volume and listen to that exhaust!

Supposedly the person who owned this whistle, sold it within the past few years to an Reading & Northern employee. I met the person who bought it, and found the listing online at one point. The listing online stated that the last time it was on a steam locomotive was in the 90s, and the locomotive was at Galesburg Railroad days. They weren't a 100% sure but after it was put on 425 in 2019 they were pretty sure its the same CBQ 5 chime. It doesn't sound exactly like it did, but the more I listen to my clips of 425 that day i chased, the more I hear this whistle.

Was privileged to be alongside of Roger in Claire, MO when the first shot was taken. What a treat! She was doing all of her 60 MPH track speed in Colchester, IL. Wasn't there, but caught the Nebraska Zephyr there doing 84. People in that town get an occassional treat, and they are compliant to the crossing signals. Saw a freight doing 60 through there once.

Trains have whistles to warn people they're approaching. The exhaust isn't enough unfortunately. I especially love the whistle sound in this video, even in the scene where the locomotive's at speed.

UK whistles serve a completelly different purpose. They aren't used to warn people of the approaching train they are only to announce that a train is leaving a station or moving about in a yard.

@@stuartadamsrailfanningvideos Wow! That's an old comment. I've heard that before about 4449. I'll make my way to America one day and sample something, at least. I want to do one of the D&RGW railways, Cass, 4014 and R&N 425. Talking of loudness, I have heard a theory about British locomotives. Obviously, a big loco like 4449 will be louder than anything British but a driver told me that British engines are louder for their size because their cylinders aren't particularly smaller than other locos' but the boiler and, therefore, he blast pipe is closer to the cylinders because of the reduced height due to our poxy loading gauge. I've also heard that British engines have a deeper, more resonant bark because so much takes place inside, again, because of our loading gauge. Whatever. I dunno. I've really enjoyed watching American steam videos over lockdown. I've watched more American videos than British ones, probably!

Wrong! That whistle sounded completely different compared to the CB&Q 5 chime whistle. Both of them were obviously 5 chimes, but only one of them was better tuned and that’s the CB&Q one from 1995 (this video), not the NKP 587’s cracked one.
